1 International Affairs Spring 2017 Request for Proposals Faculty Global Symposium in Prague international.ncsu.edu/global-symposium Key Dates: August 25, 2016 October 5, 2016 October 19, 2016 March 6-10, 2017 (Spring Break) Request for Proposals Released Proposal Due Date Decision Notification Faculty Global Symposium Dates Program Description: International Affairs at NC State strives to promote faculty and staff global scholarship and research across the university s colleges and departments. The Faculty Global Symposium in Prague is the first of a series of annual events aimed at connecting faculty and staff with NC State s global strategic partners around the world. The NC State Prague Institute is a natural location for the inaugural symposium, as its academic and administrative home will transition to the Office of International Affairs to better serve the entire NC State community in the years ahead. Collaborative opportunities abound at the Prague Institute, reaching well beyond the scope of the College of Design. This symposium is designed for faculty and staff to explore opportunities for department or college specific involvement with the Prague Institute and surrounding university partners in the Czech Republic. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the Prague Institute s history, resources and opportunities from on-site staff and International Affairs program facilitators. Discipline-specific meetings with faculty and administrators from area universities will also be arranged for participants to explore co-teaching or collaborative research opportunities. A guided tour of Prague is also included. Objectives: 1. Participants will explore current issues in comparative education, particularly focused on the European and American systems of international education. 2. Participants will learn about the background, mission & vision, resources and opportunities for collaboration available at the NC State Prague Institute. 3. Participants will explore program development options with the NC State Prague Institute and surrounding universities. 4. Participants will discover Prague as a relevant and strategic destination for academic collaboration, utilizing the Prague Institute as a gateway to Europe.
2 Preliminary Itinerary (subject to change): DAY 1 Overview - Guest Speaker: Global Trends & Issues Facing the European & American Higher Education Systems Welcome lunch with Peter Kjaer, Director of Prague Institute Background, mission and future visioning for Prague Institute Introductory Meeting at the Institute Tour of current facilities Presentations by Prague Institute staff re: services provided and opportunities in Prague International Affairs as resource - strategic partnerships, research support, funding opportunities Study Abroad Office - services, resources, program proposal process and timeline DAY 2 Visit to Czech Technical University - Tour of campus and meet with leadership to learn about compatibility with NC State and opportunities for collaboration Counterpart Collaboration - Connect with departments and individuals to discuss collaborations Individual consulting and/or meetings with Prague Institute staff and International Affairs facilitators to explore program ideas in greater depth DAY 3 Visit to Czech University of Life Sciences - Tour of campus and meet with leadership to learn about compatibility with NC State and opportunities for collaboration Counterpart Collaboration - Connect with departments and individuals to discuss collaborations Individual consulting and/or meetings with Prague Institute staff and International Affairs facilitators to explore program ideas in greater depth DAY 4 Visit Future Site of the Prague Institute - City tour of Prague to show participants everything the city has to offer Tour proposed new Prague Institute facilities and student housing DAY 5 Debrief/Wrap-up - Articulate outcomes, objectives met, lessons learned, etc. Identify next steps Complete program evaluation Budget & Logistics: Up to 12 faculty or staff members will be selected to participate in the week-long program to be held in Prague March 6-10, with International Affairs covering a majority of the travel expenses. Departments are encouraged to offer matching funds, with the strongest proposals including some level of cost-sharing from the faculty s home college and/or department. Participants are required to submit Travel Authorizations through their home department and will receive reimbursement from the Office of International Affairs up to $2,500 upon completion of the program. Accommodations for five nights in Prague will be arranged for participants. Participants are required to make flight arrangements, aligned
3 within specified time windows to facilitate airport transfers, to ensure full participation in the program. Additional travel details and logistics will be communicated to the selected cohort well in advance of the travel dates. Review Criteria: Open to all NC State faculty, advisors or staff interested in exploring strategic opportunities for collaboration with the Prague Institute Applicants must articulate how they plan to use this program to engage with the Prague Institute in the future, including developing teaching and/or research collaborations Applicants from a variety of academic colleges and departments, at any rank or level, are encouraged Applicants must be able to participate in the full schedule of activities from March 6-10 in Prague Department Head, or equivalent, (i.e. supervisor) approval required Proposal Submission Instructions: Applicants are required to submit their completed and signed proposals via to internationalaffairs@ncsu.edu using the application form (pages 4-6 of this RFP) by Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at 5:00pm. Applications submitted by the deadline that are complete and meet eligibility requirements will be evaluated for merit by a review panel comprised of International Affairs faculty and staff members. The final acceptance decisions are based on available funds and review criteria outlined above. Post-Award Reporting Requirements: Selected participants are required to provide a brief report to International Affairs within 30 days after travel is completed (April 10, 2017). Final reporting helps document the need for and justify continuation of the program. International Affairs may also contact program participants for longer-term impact reporting. Reports may be published in the GlobalEyes Newsletter or the International Affairs website. Participants developing a new course at the Prague Institute, or new study abroad program proposal in collaboration with a university partner in Prague, must submit the new program proposal to the Study Abroad Office by May 1.
