1 BROUGHTON GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP Due: Tuesday, February 16, 2016, 5:00 p.m. EST The Broughton Graduate Fellowship was established by the late William G. Broughton of Schenectady, New York, in honor of his parents, Henry Primm Broughton and Jane Tinkham Broughton. The Broughton Graduate Fellowship is an award for advanced scholarly research by graduate students that may be part of their dissertation, thesis or final project for a graduate degree at The Sage Colleges. Students in graduate programs from the Schools of Education, Health Sciences, and Management are eligible and may apply as an individual or a team. The criteria for selection of Broughton Fellows are: Meritorious graduate research conducted by students Record of outstanding academic achievement Evidence of creative and innovative problem solving To be awarded, Fellows must maintain outstanding academic status and satisfactory progress in their graduate degree program. In addition, each Broughton Fellow is required to give a public lecture, at the Sage Graduate Research Symposium or a similar venue. Broughton Fellows will be recognized at commencement by wearing a blue cord. Application Overview 1. The Broughton Graduate Fellowship is open to current graduate students who are currently planning or engaging in research at The Sage Colleges. 2. A team of student researchers may submit a single application. 3. Awards are made annually in the spring semester. 4. Application materials are available electronically on the Sage.edu website at: 5. Final application packets will be accepted by the specified due date via to the Broughton Fellowship account at broughton@sage.edu. Please instruct recommenders to submit signed letters of recommendation to broughton@sage.edu. Unsigned recommendation letters will not be accepted and application considered incomplete. 6. Project Details a. Applications should be limited to a maximum of TEN PAGES. This does not include the: title page, reference page and resume. Be sure to use size 12 Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins, single spaced, and proper APA citation format. b. Applications that exceed the TEN PAGE LIMIT; do not adhere to the Specific Details Outlined in the Instructions or are otherwise incomplete will Not Be Reviewed. The application should include the following elements: I. Title of Project and listing of all active researchers. II. Introduction including Primary Study Aim and Purpose of the Study III. Background including abbreviated Literature Review IV. Research Methodology including: Study Methodology, Data Collection, Data Analysis, Study Limitations and Proposed Timeline for completion of your research. V. Proposed Budget and Justification (aligned with the proposed research methodology). Funds may be requested for: Small equipment purchases; Software Broughton Application v. September 29,
2 used for data collection or analysis; Transcription services; Travel for data collection; Printing and postage of surveys; and other expenses directly related to data collection and analysis. No stipends will be considered. Justification for each item in your budget must be clearly included. VI. Students may apply for varying funding amounts up to a maximum of $2,000 per proposal. If selected, students may be only partially funded for their research. Please include any additional funding sources that you have either applied for or secured. VII. Projected Dissemination Plan VIII. References All of the above application materials should be sent in one PDF document via to broughton@sage.edu. 7. Signed letters of recommendation must be submitted directly to the Broughton Fellowship account at broughton@sage.edu. Please note that at least one of the two recommendation letters must address the significance of the research (e.g., provided by your research advisor or dissertation committee member). 8. Student information Contact information Degree program Resume (2 page maximum per person) Overall GPA (On official program of study at the time of submission of the application) Name and role of each active participant on the proposed research project (250 word maximum per person) *For applications from a research team, this information must be provided for each student 2. Contact Information Complete information must be provided including: name, address, telephone (the best number to contact you if there are questions about your application) and SAGE address. 2. Degree Program Provide department, degree program, current GPA (following completion of the previous fall semester) and expected graduation date. 3. Student Resume Include a bio sketch/resume (2 page maximum) for each member of the research team including: Education, Work Experience, Community/Volunteer Experience, Presentations, Publications and other relevant information. Please be sure to include specific dates and location for each of these categories. Step 2 Advisors Provide contact information for the research advisor or dissertation chair involved in the research. 1. Research Advisor(s) Complete the information for each research advisor or dissertation committee chair supervising this research. a. Note: If additional faculty or external research collaborators should be included, 2. Academic Faculty Advisor Complete the information for a Sage faculty academic advisor for the student applicants. a. 4 Step 3 IRB or IACUCC Proposal Number Please indicate the Project review status: Approved or Pending Approval or close to submission and include the project review number as applicable (please note that all research must have IRB approval before starting research and receiving funding, but pre-approval is not needed to apply for funding). Step 4 Letters of Recommendation Provide the names of the two people who will submit letters of recommendation for your application. Separately, you should contact two faculty advisors who are familiar with your academic and/or research performance and provide them with the information to submit the letters of recommendation on your behalf: Your application must include two letters of recommendation to be complete. Do not submit more than two letters per application. One recommendation letter should be provided by a faculty member or external collaborator who has firsthand knowledge of the research project as well as the role and participation of each student. The second recommendation letter should be provided by a faculty member, Department Chair, or Dean who is familiar with the academic and research excellence of the student applicant(s). The suggested content of the letter is posted at the Broughton website at Sage.edu ( o The letters of recommendation must be submitted directly to broughton@sage.edu. o The letters must contact the recommenders contact information o All letters must be signed Step 5 Project Support Please provide information to describe the internal or external funds that support the research, if applicable. Step 6 Research Proposal The research project should be far enough along to include preliminary results and a discussion of the expected significance and impact. Please include the following components: 1. Title: Enter the title of the research project (NOT counted in Page limit) 2. Summary/Abstract (250 word maximum) 3. Narrative (10 page maximum including abstract but not including title and references): Use headings to delineate sections that are appropriate to your field of study, which typically will include: a. Introduction including Primary Study Aim and Purpose of the Study (counted in the page limit). b. Background including abbreviated Literature Review (counted in the page limit). c. Methods including Study Methodology, Data Collection, Data Analysis, Study Limitations and Proposed Timeline for submission of your research (counted in the page limit) d. Proposed Budget and Justification (aligned with the proposed research methodology). References (NOT counted in the page limit) Note: If you are using a survey, questionnaire, or other data collection tool, please provide a copy of the instrument; also if applicable, provide the source and permission to use the instrument in the research project with your application (not counted in the page limit; include in the appendix and refer as part of the narrative document). Formatting requirements: Please use 1 margins, 12 point Times New Roman font, single spaced, with proper APA citation format. You may include in the header or footer, the last name(s) of the student applicants and page number; please number the pages sequentially starting with 1. A table of contents is not required. Adhere to the page limitations as indicated. Please note: Application reviewers include faculty and administrators from across the college who may not be familiar with the terminology, theories, models, and protocols in your discipline. Keep in mind that you are writing to an educated, academic audience not necessarily in your field; therefore, you should define terms that may not be common language and provide adequate background for someone not familiar with your field of study. The student applicants are responsible for the content and quality of the submitted materials. Upon submission, the student applicant(s) certify that the application reflects their own original work and includes formal approval for any external sources (i.e.: measurement tools) integrated into the conduct of this study. Applicants are responsible for verifying that the contents of their applications are complete prior to final submission. Applications that are incomplete will not be reviewed or considered for a Broughton Graduate Fellowship award.
