WHY SHOULD I BE EDUCATED?: Research shows that: Georgia is a national hub for Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) 350+ young girls are sexually exploited in Georgia every month 100+ underage girls are exploited on Craigslist every month Average age of entry into prostitution in US is 12-14

App that lets users send texts, pictures, videos, sketches Rated 17 years and older It s loaded with ads and in-app-purchases. An app named Oink Text, linked to Kik, allows communication with strangers who share their Kik usernames. There is a Kik community blog where users can submit photos of themselves and screenshots of messages (sometimes displaying users full names). Kik is a Canadian based company, governed by Canadian laws. Kik conversations are only stored on the phones of Kik users involved in the conversation. Photos and Videos are automatically deleted within a short period of time and not accessible by Kik. KIK MESSENGER
App that allows free video, voice, and messaging Users can have group chats with up to 12 people for free. Often used by teens for group study sessions Rated 13 years and older There are programs that allow oovoo users to record group video chats without anyone knowing. Unless the user takes the extra step to change their account settings, anyone can search for, see, and contact them. A study conducted in the United Kingdom indicated that 53% of the young people asked said that oovoo is risky. The three main concerns were sexual content, talking to strangers, and fake accounts. OOVOO
App that lets users send texts, audio messages, videos, and photos Rated 16 years and older It enables users to send and receive unmonitored messages. It allows group messaging. Users can share their location and contacts with others. WhatsApp claims that conversation history is not stored and deleted messages cannot be retrieved. WHATSAPP
Allows users to snap, edit, and share photos and 15-second videos either publicly or with a private network of followers. Rated 13 years and older Has two options: private or public, but either way bios are visible to anyone. Instagram reveals user s locations. When you create an account, it shows other users near you. Photos can be geotagged, revealing the location of the photo using the longitude and latitude. This app is very popular with teens. They strive to be Instagram famous by the number of followers they have. Instagram Direct allows users to send private messages to up to 15 mutual friends, encouraging private inner circle conversations. INSTAGRAM
It s a streaming scrapbook of texts, photos, videos and audio clips. Gives the user the ability to re-blog photos, videos and audio blog posts to represent the user s individuality. Rated 13 years and older Pornographic images, videos, depictions of violence, self-harm, drug use, and offensive language are easily searchable using this app. Privacy settings are more difficult to navigate. The first profile a user creates is public. A user who prefers privacy settings are required to create a second profile, which they are able to password-protect. Many teens like and want their posts re-blogged, putting their words and photos on someone else s page. TUMBLR
A messaging app that erases messages after a set period of time. Limited to text messages; users cannot send pictures or video. Rated 15 years or older It allows users to communicate covertly with no evidence that it ever took place. To discourage copying and taking screenshots, a spotlight-like system that recipients direct with a finger or mouse only reveals a portion of the message at a time. The company claims that a message can be deleted from anywhere: the device it was sent from, the device it was sent to, and its own servers. Users can send a Burn Note to anyone, even if they do not have the app. BURN NOTE
A messaging app that lets users put a time limit on the pictures and videos they send before they disappear (1 to 10 seconds). Rated 13 years or older An academic study showed that 14.2% of users admitted to sending sexual content. Half of the Snapchat users are between the ages of 13 and 17, so it s likely that minors are also sharing sexual content. The user has to provide their phone number to register for an account and an activation code is sent to them for verification. The self destructing aspect of Snapchat has led to an explosion of free and paid third party apps specifically designed to save snaps, such as Snapsaved, SnapSave, Snapkeep, SnapBox, SnapSpy, and Save My Snaps. It encourages risky behavior because it will be deleted. SNAPCHAT
A social confessional app that allows users to post whatever s on their minds, paired with an image. Rated 18 years or older Whispers are often sexual in nature. Often used as a hook up site. Many post confessions of desire, paired with eye-catching nearly nude photos. Common Whisper topics include insecurity, depression, and substance abuse. The user may remain anonymous; however, the app encourages users to exchange personal information in the Meet-Up section. WHISPER
A free social-networking app that lets users post brief, Twitter-like comments to the 500 geographically nearest Yik Yak users (1.5 mile radius). Rated 17 years or older By default, the user s exact location is shown unless they toggle location-sharing off. Each time the user opens the app, GPS updates the location. This app is often used for cyberbullying, explicit sexual content, location-sharing, and exposure to explicit information about drugs and alcohol. Rated 17 years or older, but no verification process. Users upvote or downvote other people s posts to rate them. Some users have used the app to threaten others, causing school lockdowns; therefore, some schools have banned access. YIK YAK
Hannah Smith -14 Rebecca Sedwick -12 Josh Unsworth - 15 Ciara Pugsley - 15 Erin Gallagher - 13 These 5 teens committed suicide due to cyberbullying via ask.fm
The Meet New People app is popular for flirting, entertainment, and social networking. Rated 13 years or older Users can chat with anyone online, as well as search locally. The user is required to provide their first and last name, age, and zip code to register. The app asks for permission to use location services in order to locate the closest matches from the phone s location. MeetMe has a Match feature where users can secretly admire others. To a teen, the more secret admirers they have the better. MEETME
An app and chat site that puts two strangers together in their choice of a text chat or video chat room. Rated 18 years or older Omegle s catch phrase is Talk to strangers! No registration is required to sign up. Because chats are anonymous, they are often more explicit in nature. Omegle is filled with people searching for sexual chat. Some prefer to do so live. Others offer links to porn sites. The user can choose Spy Mode, which is text only, or choose to video chat. A 13-year-old teen commented in a Common Sense Media article, Omegle is the #1 site for your child not to go on, especially video. OMEGLE
A flirting app that allows users to sign up as teens or adults. Users can post to a feed, comment on other s posts, add pictures, and chat. No age restrictions When the user indicates their age, they are automatically placed into the appropriate peer group. The age of the user is not verified making it easy to pose as an older or younger user. Users can earn points by using the app and responding to ads. Users can redeem the points to reveal the profiles of users who have checked them out. Posts are commonly used for profanity and suggestive pictures. SKOUT
A photo and messaging dating app for browsing pictures of potential matches within a certain mile radius of the user s location. Previously rated 12 years or older, recently changed to 17 years or older A lot of negative publicity regarding teens meeting strangers online. The Tinder app requires users to link with their Facebook account; however, fake Facebook accounts are easily created. It s all about the swipes. The user swipes right to like and left to pass. If a person the user swiped to like also swiped to like, the app allows them to message each other. Meeting up and possibly hooking up is the goal of this app. The app is location based leaving it possible for teens to meet up with nearby people. TINDER
