3 Introduction Alcohol abuse is a wide spread problem among young people in Botswana. Alcohol abuse increases the risk of young people contracting HIV infections. It is important to note that alcohol is a powerful, mood altering drug, not only does it affect the mind and body in unpredictable ways, young people lack the judgement and coping skills to handle alcohol wisely. As a result, the abuse of alcohol by young people often leads to destructive behaviors. Alcohol abuse increases chances of road accidents, rape, teenage pregnancy and crime. What are the consequences of alcohol abuse?

4 ? What is alcohol? Alcohol is an intoxicating substance found in beverages such as beers, wines, brandy, whisky, traditional beer, chibuku and vodka, etc. What is alcohol abuse? Alcohol abuse is a continued pattern of alcohol use that impacts negatively on one s behavior or health. d

5 s What are the consequences of alcohol abuse? - Increased chances of HIV infections and AIDS - Involvement in violence either as perpetrator or victim. - Rape, sexual abuse and incest - Teenage pregnancy - Alcohol use during pregnancy can affect the health of the unborn child.

6 ...the consequences of alcohol abuse? - Problems with school work and delinquency. - Alcohol can cause serious health problems such stomach ulcers, liver disease, cancers, heart disorders and sexual problems. - Alcohol abuse is also linked to suicide and homicide. - Alcohol abuse may lead to fatal road accidents which have disabled and claimed the lives of many young people.

7 @ - People who abuse alcohol neglect their families. - Neglect their appearance. - Neglect proper nutrition.. - Increased absenteeism from work. - Increased social isolation....the consequences

9 young people abuse alcohol? - Peer pressure - they would like to (fit in) and please their peers. - Many outlets; makes it easy for young people to access alcohol. - They have a parent or sibling who is a problem drinker. - The media s glamorous portrayal of alcohol; Encourages them to think that drinking will make them popular, attractive, happy or cool. - Sexual relationships with older persons; (sugar daddies and sugar mommies give them money to buy alcohol).

10 Risky behavior Young people who use alcohol are more likely to engage in; - Unprotected sex - Multiple sexual partners - Sex with strangers - Engage in sexual intercourse at a younger age - Inconsistent and incorrect use of condoms - Commercial sex

11 s Individuals who begin drinking at a younger age are more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who wait until adulthood to use alcohol. behavior risky

12 What - Develop healthy friendships with kids who don t drink. - Young people should not use alcohol to solve emotional problems such as stress, depression, or anger but should talk openly and honestly to their parents and friends about their problems. - Young people should avoid places were alcohol is used or sold. Avoid going out with friends who drink alcohol. If your friends drink, you are likely to drink too!

13 young people can do? - Join your school or community efforts to discourage alcohol use by young people. - There are many alcohol free healthier, challenging and fun after school or weekend entertainment and sporting activities. - Do not drink and drive - Do not ride in a car with a driver who has been drinking. - Abstain from sex or condomise
