2 Presentations by: ANNA MACKEY : Physiotherapist Anna Mackey is a Physiotherapy Practitioner in the Paediatric Orthopaedic department; Starship Children s Hospital and Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Auckland. Anna completed a PhD (2005) and post doctoral studies at the Department of Surgery, University of Auckland and worked as a researcher and physiotherapist at the University of Auckland Gait Lab from 2001 to Her clinical and research interests include gait and rehabilitation of children with developmental disabilities and upper limb motor control in children with cerebral palsy. MANDY BARNIE: Physiotherapist Graduate of Griffith University (Gold Coast, QLD Australia) Bachelor Physiotherapy/Bachelor Exercise Science dual degree in The majority of my clinical experience has been gained from working within the specialist multidisciplinary team of the Statewide Paediatric Rehabilitation Service at the Royal Children's Hospital in Brisbane managing children with acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury and amputation, as well as cerebral palsy and a variety of other neurological and neuromuscular conditions. I worked routinely with orthotists and prosthetists within and external to this service, particularly in my role designated to the Paediatric Limb Deficiency and Amputee clinic at the Royal Children's Hospital, and Paediatric Rehabilitation Outreach Service visiting rural communities across Queensland. I moved to New Zealand to commence employment with the National Child Rehabilitation Service at the Wilson Centre in January 2011, and amongst other roles as a senior clinician commenced my position with the National Gait Laboratory Service. I ve also completed the NSW University prosthetics course; and have had a role in teaching assessment and management of spasticity and contracture in the child with cerebral palsy at various centres across QLD.
3 MARK LEONIDA: Dip. O.P. T. E. C, HPC MBAPO Specialist Orthotist Mark graduated from the Marylebone School of Orthotics & Prosthetics in 1986 and specialising in Paediatric Neuro-Orthopaedics in South East Thames area. After his initial experience with orthotics in New Zealand in , he returned to the UK where his career led him to Queen Marys University hospital, leading the Diabetic Foot regional clinic, this included working with a group of regional specialists in Rehabilitation services for many years. Included in this was working with The One Small Step Gait Lab for 10 years at Guy s Hospital. In 2000, after identifying his interest in sports injuries, Mark, later founded and became Clinical Director of the Technology in Motion private biomechanics clinic, where he spent several years assessing first division football players and undertook assessments for RFU members. He introduced the use of force-plate and video analysis into the clinics for all biomechanical assessments. Although, still clinical director and owner of Motionlab Ltd, he returned to New Zealand in 2009, to relax and enjoy the country he loved for so many years and has accepted the role of Clinical Manager at the Orthotic Centre, where he concentrates on client services and manufacturing Specialised Orthotics.

5 NZ Orthotic training day 17 th Nov 2012 Novatel Ellerslie Learning outcomes: The participant will be able to 1. Understand normal gait, including the gait cycle and muscle use 2. Describe a musculoskeletal physical examination used as part of the gait assessment 3. Discuss orthotic solutions for common paediatric and adult gait disorders 4. Complete a standardized 2-D gait analysis 5. Apply principles of gait assessment and orthotic prescription to case examples 8.45 Registration 9.15 Welcome Address Morning session: Presentation 1: Normal gait Led by Anna Mackey This talk will summarise the history of gait assessment, three dimensional gait analysis and normal gait biomechanics, including the joint range and muscle action at each stage of the gait cycle. Some key gait patterns for a range of gait disorders will be presented Morning Tea Presentation 2: Assessment techniques & tools Led by Amanda Barnier This presentation will introduce the terminology and techniques of a musculoskeletal assessment that can be used in conjunction with gait assessment measures. The principles of completing a 2-D gait assessment will be discussed and other tools for assessing parameters of gait will be presented Presentation 3: Types and principles of orthotics Led by Mark Leonida This section of the day draws together the theory from the first two lectures, to build a confident and practical solution for your clients and the componentry and design of orthoses necessary to overcome their biomechanical deficits. 1. Topics to include: joint ranges and their effect on other parts of the gait process 2. pathways to additional clinical input for improved outcomes 3. designs of lower limb orthotics 4. changing parameters for different conditions and the orthotic consequences Lunch Workshop Introduction Afternoon Group session: All presenters Case study review and orthotic prescription x3 Completing a 2-D gait assessment Afternoon Tea Summary and discussion Feedback from groups on case study reviews and discussion on orthotic prescription and take home learning for Monday identified by each participant 4.30 Close Course assessment forms and feedback
