1 Virginia s Natural Resources & Virginia Geography Study Guide Please use this study guide to study daily for your test on! Please keep this study guide in your HOMEWORK FOLDER so that you can use it to study at HOME AND during opportunities at SCHOOL. What is a natural resource? Virginia has many natural resources. These resources include. Compare natural and man-made resources. What is a watershed? The largest watershed in Virginia is the. Ashland and Richmond are part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. This means that surface water where you live eventually flows into the. Groundwater Lake Reservoir Rivers Bay Ocean Why are natural and cultivated forests in Virginia important? What is a cultivated forest? A natural resource is something found in nature that is valuable to people, plants, or wildlife. forests, farm land, coal, sand, rocks, wildlife and aquatic organisms, clean water and air, and beautiful scenery. Natural resources are found in nature and include forests, soil, water, etc. Man-made resources are created or grown by humans. Man-made resources include cultivated forests, roads, cars, plastics, etc. A watershed is an area over which surface water flows to a single collection place. Chesapeake Bay watershed Chesapeake Bay Water that is found beneath the Earth s surface. a body of water entirely surrounded by land and unconnected to the sea except by rivers or streams (ex. Lake Drummond in the Great Dismal Swamp) a natural or artificial lake or large tank used for collecting and storing water (ex. John Kerr Reservoir) a large natural stream of fresh water flowing along a definite path, usually into the sea (ex. James River) a wide indentation in a shoreline having deep water that is surrounded by land on three sides (ex. Chesapeake Bay) a very large body of salt water that is one of the four oceans on Earth (ex. Atlantic Ocean) Forests provide habitats for animals, lumber, recreation, and watershed protection. A forest that is purposefully planted by people, rather than one that grows up naturally. VA Regions and Resources 1
2 Why are there so many different kinds of plants and animals in VA? What are 3 types of soil you can find across VA? Why is good soil important in Virginia? What are examples of mineral resources found in Virginia? Why are mineral resources important in Virginia? What are the 5 states that border Virginia? What large bodies of water border Virginia? What is the Fall Line and where is it located? Why did cities develop along the Fall Line? All rivers flow to the sea. The four major rivers that flow into the Chesapeake Bay are. The Atlantic Ocean provided between Virginia and other places, such as Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, etc.) The Chesapeake Bay provided a safe and was a source of and. The Eastern Shore is separated from the mainland of Virginia by the. There are many kinds of plants and animals because Virginia has different climates and landforms across the state. Sandy soil, clay soil, and rocky soil Farmers need good soil to grow crops. Good soil also allows many plants to grow which provides food for many animals. Coal, limestone, granite, sand, and gravel Mineral resources are used for energy (coal), cement and building stone (limestone), countertops (granite), concrete and glass (sand), driveways and roads (gravel). Maryland Mike West Virginia Went Kentucky Kickin Tennessee To North Carolina North Carolina Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay The Fall Line is a natural border between the Coastal Plain and Piedmont regions where waterfalls prevent further travel on the river.
