N BROWN GROUP PLC Green Travel Plan 11 th April 2014 N Brown Group plc 27
INTRODUCTION who are we? N Brown Group, and its principal subsidiary, JD Williams and Company Ltd, is a leading internet and catalogue home shopping company, with over 140 years of experience in the distance shopping market. Other facts about us include:- 800m turnover / 98m profit 3700 employees across the group 2 principle Distribution Centre s Shaw/Hadfield Head office is in central Manchester and houses 1000 employees Shaw Distribution Centre houses 1000 employees We have a 1200 seat Call Centre within Manchester Arena N Brown Group plc 28
Drivers for Change The factors that drove our GTP were; Growth we have a vision that by the year 2020 we will double group turnover. To help achieve this target a new purpose built warehouse will be built at Shaw During the construction parking spaces will be reduced by around 50% There are planning conditions which have to be met, these include:- Increase employee car sharing by 5% Increase employee cycling by 2% Increase employee walking by 2% Increase the use of public transport commuting by 6% N Brown Group plc 29
Starting Point To start on the road to achieving our GTP targets, the following work was undertaken:- Working party established including a number of key departments within the business A green travel survey was launched to understand employees commuting habits and also give us something to measure against. Data of all employees who drive to work was collated. We engaged with TFGM to help us develop green travel initiatives. Alternative parking was created at Shaw to reduce the impact of losing 50% of our spaces. N Brown Group plc 30
Initiatives A number of initiatives were launched to achieve our GTP targets. These include; Subsidised bus routes into Shaw. Travel Choices open days hosted by Transport for Greater Manchester (TFGM). Discounted Travel arrangements. Car share events supported by TfGM. N Brown Group plc 31
What didn t go well.. Not everything went as smoothly as we hoped! Travel event/public transport Tram times not compatible with JDW shift change over. Low take up of the discounted annual travel tickets Cost of Tram use from Derker to Shaw. Employees cannot use annual travel tickets on JDW contracted bus routes. Internal communications Some employees feel that communication has not been great. Not many employees have access to a pc so communication was delivered via team briefings. N Brown Group plc 32
What did go well.. But some things did go well! Travel Event We had an excellent turnout at the TFGM open days. The days generated a lot of interest from employees. Car Sharing TFGM The car sharing events generated lots of interest from employees. Over 260 employees are registered on the database, with 158 active matches so far. Overall support from Chris and the team has been fantastic. N Brown Group plc 33
Summary New purpose built warehouse Loss of 50% of car parking spaces Planning permission targets to achieve Engage with TfGM Introduced Initiatives Communicated with employees at every stage Objectives are to minimise impact to employees Consult with employees Project to be completed by June 2014 N Brown Group plc 34

Greater Manchester s International Centre for contemporary visual arts and media Debbie Bell Safety and Operations Coordinator
Cornerhouse stimulates, entertains and educates its audiences to engage with issues and debates in contemporary arts and culture opened cinemas 3 galleries 2 bookshops bar and café publications distribution service
In spring 2015, a new purpose-built centre for international contemporary art, theatre, film and books will open its doors for the first time in Manchester, as part of the vibrant new First Street development. It will be called HOME. From gallery to screen via café bar and bookshop, HOME will redefine the contemporary arts centre, creating a space where ideas, hopes and moments of wonder ricochet off walls and lodge themselves in the headspace of audiences old and new.
Formed by the merger of two of Manchester s best-loved arts organisations, Cornerhouse and the Library Theatre Company, The new organisation aims to make a HOME for curiosity seekers, for lovers of the dramatic, the digital and the deeply engaging; for radicals and reciprocators.
Collaboration As part of the steering group who created Manchester Arts Sustainability team (MAST) in 2011 Cornerhouse has become a leading arts organisation in sustainability. We are also involved with the Corridor Low Carbon Environment and Infrastructure Group (CLCEIG). And Manchester Employers Green Travel Forum
Green Champion or just someone who cares? Since joining Cornerhouse in 2005, I have developed, promoted and implemented numerous sustainable and environmental schemes. So, whether it's developing a new behavioural change campaign or updating the travel plan, I use existing budgets to be creative and am a strong believer in action plans that follow through. I am passionate about conserving resources, improving the environment and saving money. Also I feel strongly that the cultural shift is reflected at HOME.
Travel Plan The need for a travel plan came from our commitment to Manchester s Environmental Business Pledge. It was part of the criteria to reach Gold level, which we have been at since In the last 18 months we have continuously strived to improve staff wellbeing and reduce workplace travel emission in this area.
Challenges At Cornerhouse there is no environmental budget - so it s using the budgets, in the areas you already have, to be as creative as you can, and then looking at if there's any hidden opportunities (Debbie Bell). How do you reduce emissions when only 3/100 employees travel to work by car?
This created a need to look at other areas. Replacing work cross city taxi journeys with pool bikes or public transport. Collating data on journeys and setting targets to reduce. Look at other areas of travel: rail and flight. Customers and how we promote traveling to our venue. What support is available outside of the organisation.
Progress Through excellent and innovative programming including visual arts, films, theatre and educational activities which engage a wide range of artists and audiences along with evaluating our success we are able to choose every day in big and small ways how our actions and words build a better quality of life for our employees, audiences, event participants and suppliers
Action Plan Activity By whom When 1 Look into an introduction of Cycle to Work Scheme Debbie Bell Dec Increase availability of lockers for walkers Debbie Bell Jan Review all staff travel information to include smarter working practices and walking / cycling information Debbie Bell March Increase number of secure cycle stands Debbie Bell April Implement Visitor travel survey Debbie Bell January Promote tele and video conferencing via team brief, staff induction and staff handbook Debbie Bell Dec Look into Introducing subsidised/cheaper public transport fares Debbie Bell April Provide information on cycle routes Debbie Bell January Provide information on location of facilities on-site Debbie Bell November Offer adult cycle training through local MCC and TFGM initiatives Debbie Bell March Promote the use of using pool bike rather than taxi s for cross city journeys.
