This course also provides practice of management concepts and skills presented in 212. The student is expected to demonstrate increasing mastery of skills and concepts necessary to function as an effective Associate Degree Nurse. CORE CURRICULUM: DISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTS: Not applicable Required for ADN curriculum. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION: EVALUATION: Nursing 241 uses audio-visual materials with lecture or discussion, selected readings, case study, written assignments and demonstration. Upon completion of this course, the student will demonstrate achievement of the course objectives by obtaining a final minimum grade of seventy-eight (78%), as measured by examinations. EVALUATION METHOD: All assignments are mandatory. All assignments must be completed to successfully complete the course. Examinations (3) 75% Final Examination (1) 25% Total 100% GRADING SCALE: Per School of Nursing Student Handbook guidelines. PROGRESSION POLICY: Progression in the nursing program without interruption is determined academically by achieving a minimal grade of
3 "C" (78%). ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is mandatory. See the School of Nursing Student Handbook for specific guidelines. TESTING POLICY: OTHER COURSE EXPECTATIONS: Students are expected to take all examinations as they are scheduled. Make-up policy with regard to examinations is described in the School of Nursing Student Handbook. The student is expected to have read the material to be covered in class PRIOR to class. Examinations will cover material from lecture, discussion, case study, audio-visual materials and selected readings. Therefore, the student is expected to study these sources of material thoroughly. The student must complete integrated tests 1-5 under NCLEX Success at a passing rate of 85% each. The following prompts will get you into the program: start-all programs-nursing-meds software-nclex Success. The student must present to the instructor the computer printout with the student name and score listed. These questions should be completed outside of scheduled class time. The assignment is mandatory and if not completed with result in failure of the course. LEVEL II COMPETENCIES 1. Provides direct care, based on the nursing process, by initiating as well as implementing all parts of the nursing process for clients with defined nursing diagnoses, within a variety of settings, and who have simple to complex health care needs. 2. Utilizes comprehensive therapeutic communication skills when interacting with clients, families, and other health care team members. 3. Assesses clients need for information in order to formulate a teaching plan; implements and modifies individualized teaching plans, and evaluates clients needs. 4. Organizes comprehensive aspects of care for clients with simple to complex health needs in a variety of settings. 5. Demonstrates responsibility and accountability to the profession of nursing as well as collecting data for nursing research and utilizing research findings.
4 CRITERIA FOR EXTRA CREDIT ARTICLE REVIEWS: Students will have the opportunity to obtain extra credit points by critiquing an article from a reputable nursing journal. The main considerations of each article should be: (1) Explanation of main concepts, (2) Your understanding of the article, (3) The subject matter application to nursing practice. Your paper needs to be turned in on the day of the test to receive credit. The article should be applicable to whatever subject matter we studied for that test. One test point can be earned for each article review; up to 1 test point per test can be earned. You must submit a copy of the article with your summary. Regurgitation of information from the article will not be accepted. Material must be no more than 3 years old. Reviews should be between 1-2 pages. FORMAT: Top of Page Your name. Date. Which Test This Is For. Journal Name w/date (Month, Year etc), Volume & Page # (s) Title of Article Author (s) Main Concepts: 1/3 of Critique. Personal Critique: 1/3 of Critique. Application: 1/3 of critique. All double spaced. Good grammar and accurate spelling are acceptable standards in a college level course & will be considered.
5 NURSING 241 NURSING CARE OF ADULTS IV - THEORY COURSE OBJECTIVES At the completion of the course, the learner will meet the following objectives in the areas of: respiratory, cardiovascular, hepatic, pancreatic, renal and neurologic systems: also for clients with burns injuries and tuberculosis. 1. Uses critical thinking skills in implementing the nursing process. 2. Identifies a nursing history based on subjective and objective data. 3. Identifies basic health care needs/stressors according to the nursing assessment. 4. Selects a nursing diagnoses from an established list based on identified health care needs/stressors for the individual client. 5. Prioritizes nursing diagnoses for the individual client that reflect biopsychosocial needs. 6. Identifies goals for the individual client according to the selected nursing diagnoses with attention to their level of growth and development. 7. Identifies outcome criteria specific to each goal to promote adaptation. 8. Identifies nursing interventions for an individual client=s plan of care to meet human needs. 9. Utilizes knowledge from nursing and liberal arts and science courses when contributing to an individual plan of care. 10. Verbalizes understanding of the medical plan of care based on scientific knowledge to promote an integrated plan of care. 11. Recognizes the client=s response and adaptation to the plan of care based on established nursing interventions and outcome criteria.
6 NURSING 241 NURSING CARE OF ADULTS IV - THEORY COURSE OUTLINE Nursing diagnoses, goals, plans of care, and interventions will be provided per unit. The specific information will be given relating to each problem. The nursing plan of care will stress the concept of adaptation. The nursing plan of care and medical plan of care have been separated to emphasize the difference between the two concepts. Each unit in this outline will be presented in the following format: A.
