The student is introduced to the nursing process and skills of critical thinking, decision-making, and ethics/law in order to understand the health care needs of people of diverse cultures across the life span. Data collection is introduced via normal system approach. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the student will: 1. Apply the nursing process to a variety of healthy and ill individuals across the continuum of care, by using critical thinking and decision making principles based on ANA Standards. 2. Recognize appropriate therapeutic nursing interventions related to all levels of prevention and care. 3. Develop effective verbal and written communication skills. 4. Conceptualize the components of a total person and those things which comprise uniqueness, biopsychosocial aspects, family, spirituality, culture. 5. Define culture and diversity and incorporate these needs into the patient s plan of care. 6. Identify various legal and ethical components of professional nursing utilizing the ANA Code of Ethics. 7. Identify teaching learning principles. 8. Apply a nursing theorist, conceptual model or framework to an issue that effects nursing practice. 3 Nurs 311_315 Syllabus.F07
5 9. Understand the essential nursing care components in making a home health care visit. Course Competencies Communication: 1. Begin to communicate effectively in verbal and written form. 2. Utilize appropriate health care terminology. Critical Thinking: 1. Recognize the components of critical thinking. Therapeutic Nursing Intervention: 1. Recognize and apply the nursing process with individuals and families across the continuum of care. 2. Define the roles of the professional nurse. 6 Evaluation by Student Evaluation of Teaching/Theory Course Clinical Instructor Evaluation Student Evaluation of Clinical Agency(ies) Student Handbook Refer to the Shepherd University Department of Nursing Education Student Handbook and Department Policy Manual for additional related policies and procedures. Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty (e.g., plagiarism, cheating, falsifying records, etc.) will result in academic action as outlined in the Shepherd University Student Handbook. Absence/Attendance (Student notification) In case of inclement weather conditions, the student will be notified by the faculty/school in one of the following manners: Telephone call Website TV/Radio announcements For additional information regarding attendance/absence policies refer to the Shepherd University Student Handbook and the Department of Nursing Education Policy Manual. Textbooks Required Potter & Perry (2005). Fundamentals of nursing (6 th edition). Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott. Your text should be bundled with Potter on-line skills and Virtual Clinical Excursions. Please check with an employee to ensure that you have all 3 elements. You have been assigned reading for 36 chapters. Pick any 20 chapters and complete the review questions for those chapters that can be found on the Potter and Perry CD in your text. Print your results and staple them together. Due date is April 30. Chabner, D. (2006). Medical Terminology: A short course (4 th edition). St. Louis: Saunders. (Students will use this book at their own pace. Take home quizzes are due Oct 8.) Poorman, S. Good thinking: Test taking and study skills for nursing students (2 nd edition). 7 Assessment of Student Learning The Department of Nursing Education participates in the Shepherd University Program of Assessment of Student Learning in order to monitor how students are meeting educational goals in the interest of promoting an atmosphere of learning and ongoing enhancement of academic programs. Shepherd University requires student participation in assessment tests and surveys, both departmentally and when selected to participate in campus-wide assessment. Failure to participate can result in administrative action including withholding of grades and/or restriction from registration until the requirements are met. In this course the following assessment activities are required. Attendance is mandatory ATI Testing (Emma Ora Byrd Hall computer lab) 1) Self Assessment August 27, 10:30-12 pm 2) Critical Thinking September 10, 10:30-12 pm 3) Fundamentals* November 26, pm *Note: You must pass this test with at least the 50 th percentile for the BSN program.
