Advanced concepts in medical surgical nursing will be discussed within a body systems framework focusing on the nurse s role in meeting the needs of the client, family, and community. (3 credits) Prerequisites: Pediatric Nursing, Pediatric Nursing Clinical Laboratory, Obstetric Nursing, Obstetric Nursing Clinical Laboratory, Psychiatric Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing Clinical Laboratory, Community Health Nursing Corequisites: Advanced Medical Surgical Nursing Clinical Laboratory, Professional Nursing Leadership Course Objectives: Please refer to the Miami-Dade Community College (2001). 2 Dates and Times: Lectures are every Monday and Friday, 8AM 12:00 Noon September 28 November 2, 2007 Room Grading Policy: Students will take two Tests and one Final examination during this course. Students are expected to take all tests and examinations when they are scheduled. Faculty should be notified beforehand if there is a problem. If a student is unable to attend class the day a test is scheduled, the weight of the Final examination will be increased by the weight of the missed test. If more than one test is missed, the student may be asked to withdraw. The tests and examinations are weighted as follows: 2 Tests (30% each) 60% 1 Final Examination 40% Total 100% Grading Scale: % A 85-92% B 77-84% C 69-76% D Below 69% F Method of Communicating Grades: Grades for each test will be distributed to each individual one week after taking the test. Test Review: Faculty will review exam content when test results are distributed. Students who wish to review their own test results must schedule an appointment with the faculty within three (3) weeks of receiving individual results. Standardized Testing: During the semester, students will be assessed using standardized diagnostic tests that will provide valuable individual feedback regarding their learning styles and mastery of course content. All of these scheduled tests are required. Failure to take the test(s) will result in a grade of I, or Incomplete, for the course. Remediation: Students who are not meeting course objectives and or requirements are responsible to seek tutorial remediation. It is the students responsibility to make an appointment with the course instructor for direction regarding remediation. Students with documented disabilities should contact the campus ACCESS office in advance for information on appropriate policies and procedures for obtaining assistance. No retroactive accommodations can be provided. Additional information can be obtained at
3 Attendance: Attendance is required in order for students to successfully meet the course objectives. Students who miss any scheduled lectures are responsible for acquiring the missed information. Progression: In order to progress to Nursing Leadership, students must earn a grade of S and/or C or higher in every nursing course required this semester. See co-requisites.
