2 Course Description: This course provides a synthesis of the major concepts of the client, environment, health, holism, and the art and science of nursing essential to enhancing a caring-collaborative relationship in nursing practice. Nursing management and leadership of other health care workers are incorporated with the provision and management of care of clients with complicated and critical pathophysiological conditions. N24 provides concurrent clinical experiences in both acute and long-term care facilities as well as community settings. Course Outcomes: Provider of Nursing Care/Nursing Process: Employs the Nursing Process in care of clients with complicated and critical pathophysiological conditions with unpredictable outcomes. Uses advanced communication skills and teaching and learning principles to care for individual clients and families with critical disruptions in homeostasis, as well as to meet the learning needs of clients, families and coworkers. Provider of Nursing Care/Safety: Recognizes risk in provision of health care, and applies safety management strategies. Manager of Nursing Care/Clinical Reasoning: Demonstrates clinical reasoning to problem-solve, organize, prioritize, and delegate care for a group of patients. Manager of Nursing Care/Collegial Conduct: Employs leadership and management skills in providing efficient and effective patient care in collaboration with the healthcare team. Member of the Profession of Nursing: Demonstrates accountability for the provision and evaluation of nursing care that conforms to professional standards and incorporates legal and ethical responsibilities of the nurse, especially the rights of patients. 4 Teaching/Learning Methodologies: Active involvement in the learning process is essential. Instructors serve as facilitators of learning and engage students in a variety of activities to promote the acquisition of professional nursing competence and values. Reading course materials is essential to achieving subject matter mastery, and students should come to class prepared. Although lecture is an important element of the classroom experience, additional participative activities (e.g. discussion, debate, reflection and application) enhance the learning process. Each member of the class, instructor and student alike, is responsible for creating an effective and enjoyable learning environment. Assignments and Evaluation (Grades): Quizzes, examinations, and other assignments allow both student and faculty to evaluate learning, and assist nursing students in preparing for NCLEX. Quizzes cover a relatively small amount of material and are not cumulative. Because acquiring the knowledge required to practice nursing safely and competently builds on prior learning, midterm and final exams are cumulative; however, they are weighted to emphasize the most recent course content. A blueprint detailing the testing formula for this course is included in this syllabus, Quizzes and exams are reviewed with students for learning purposes; however, to preserve the integrity of testing materials, faculty retain all copies of quizzes and exams. Should you wish to review previous testing materials prior to an exam, this is permitted -- by individual appointment or by scheduled times depending on faculty preference and availability. Academic papers must be written in APA format. Explanations and grading criteria for other assignments are included in later pages of this syllabus or will be handed out the first week of class. Note: If you are having difficulty with course content or assignments, please make an appointment with your instructor(s) immediately. Course Assignments: To demonstrate mastery of course objectives, students will accomplish a variety of assignments. 5 There are three components to the determination of your final course grade. The clinical portion of the class is evaluated on a pass/fail basis. The clinical faculty determines whether course clinical competencies are met/not met. You must pass clinical in order to continue in the program. Failing clinical results in an F grade for the course. Quizzes and exams are evaluated as follows. The quiz average (with the lowest quiz score dropped), midterm and final examinations are combined this score is 90% of your course grade. ATI Leadership and Adult Medical/Surgical proctored exam scores with preparation and remediation is combined with the quiz and exam score. The ATI score is worth 5% of the course grade. You must achieve 75% on cumulative/weighted examination scores (quizzes, exams and ATI) in order to pass the course. Please see detailed information regarding ATI scoring in the next section of this course packet. You must take these proctored ATI examinations. Not taking one or more of these examinations will result in failure ( F for the course). If the combined examination score is at least 75% and the student has successfully completed all skills, math and clinical requirements, CTA scores are added to determine your final course grade. Your final course grade must be 75% or greater to pass/progress. Completion and submission of all written assignments is mandatory. Failure to submit a CTA results in failure ( F grade for the course). Evaluation - Theory Examinations: Quizzes, Midterm & Final Exams There will be scheduled quizzes, a cumulative midterm examination and a comprehensive final examination. There will be no make-up quizzes; however, the lowest quiz score will be dropped from the semester quiz average. The course teaching team will grant permission for an alternate arrangement for quizzes, midterm and final examinations only in extreme circumstances. The faculty will retain all quizzes and exams. Critical Thinking Assignment(s): CTA Due date(s) for CTA assignments are posted in the class schedule. Please turn in written assignments at the beginning of class.

6 Five (5) percentage points will be deducted from the CTA assignment grade for every business day the written paper is late. Any assignment turned in after close of business (4:30 PM) on the due date is considered late. Please attach the grading criteria sheet to the written CTA assignment. No re-writes will be afforded to substandard CTA assignments. ** CTA assignments are mandatory. Failure to submit a CTA assignment results in failure ( F grade for the course.) ATI Assessment and Accountability (grading) Assessments Technologies Institute (ATI) Content Mastery Series is being used by College of the Redwoods Nursing Programs to assist students with academic performance and preparation for NCLEX testing after graduation. There are two ATI proctored assessments included in the NURS 24 course grade: Leadership/Management and the Adult Medical/Surgical exam. ATI preparation, proficiency and remediation of these two proctored assessments will comprise 5% of your course grade; however, scores are weighted with L&M worth 2% and MedSurg worth 3%. A third proctored assessment, the Comprehensive Predictor Examination, is required but does not contribute to the N24 grade. Points for the L&M and MedSurg ATI are awarded as follows: Preparation Time and energy invested here will maximize achievement on proctored exams. Take the Leadership and Adult MS online practice tests. Repeat until you achieve a score of at least 90 on each practice test. You may also find the focused content area practice exams helpful: cardiovascular, neurological, renal & respiratory. These are optional resources. Remediation Herein lays the real value of ATI that you take steps to remedy your area of weakness. Create a focused review for each proctored exam. For each item/topic missed, create one of the following. Exploratory questions Mind map 3x5 card with at least 3 key ideas related to the topic/concept Submissions must clearly identify the topic/concept with remediation clearly linked. Create a separate and distinct section for each topic/concept. *If practice or remediation is partial; partial points will be awarded.*

Each student makes continuous, daily/weekly self-evaluations of clinical performance in the clinical journal, clinical opportunities records, and reviews written feedback from clinical faculty. The clinical faculty makes continuous, daily/weekly student evaluations of clinical performance and gives verbal and written feedback throughout the ongoing clinical experience. The student and the clinical professor complete a written evaluation of student performance at the end of the clinical rotation. Upon request, a copy of each evaluation will be given to the student and the original will be maintained in the student s file in the Health Occupations office. Skills Lab Referral (SLR). Students identified as needing remediation for a skill(s) or other clinical competency(s) will be given a SLR form to assist the student with further instruction, demonstration, and/or practice. Please see specific instructions and SLR form in the Program Handbook, Appendix B. Clinical Learning Opportunity Form. This process is faculty-initiated with studentgenerated responses to incidents usually related to clinical learning; however they may also be appropriate to classroom, college laboratory, and other activities. Incidents such as lack of preparation for clinical practice, demonstrating unsafe, unethical, or unprofessional conduct would warrant the generation of a Clinical Learning Opportunity Form. These forms become part of the clinical evaluation and support low ratings on the clinical evaluation form. Please see forms in the Nursing Program Handbook, Appendix B. Petition to Continue. Any absence may jeopardize a student s ability to successfully complete clinical objectives of a rotation. If a student is absent from clinical, skills

8 lab, or simulation activity, in excess of one week (18 hours) for the entire semester, a Petition to Continue must be completed and submitted by the student. The petition requires the student and clinical instructor to identify alternate activities to replace the missed clinical learning. Course faculty will review the petition and must approve the alternate learning activity. The alternate assignment(s) must be completed in a satisfactory and timely manner. Please see Petition to Continue form and instructions in the Program Handbook, Appendix B. Conference Summary. At any time in a semester when student practice indicates that a clinical failure is a possible outcome, faculty and student will jointly complete a Conference Summary (see Nursing Program Handbook, Appendix B.) Grading Scale: A grade of C or better is required for progression and completion of the ADN program. A minimal average of seventy five (75) percent is required for a passing grade of "C."
