1 Firefighter Position POSITION TITLE: Firefighter DEPARTMENT: Fire ACCOUNTABLE TO: Fire Chief PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION: To perform work in the protection of life and property from fire and other hazards, the operation of Fire Department and ambulance vehicles, the treatment of emergency medical problems, and emergency rescue. MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY: 1. Responds to fire, medical, and other emergency calls with the department and performs medical, fire suppression and rescue procedures as apparent or assigned. 2. Drives or operates a variety of Fire Department vehicles; may be required to perform as pump operator. 3. Assists in ensuring evacuation of all persons at risk at fire or rescue scenes.. Connects and handles hose lines and nozzles; places or hoists ladders; turns water on and off; uses axes, bars, or hooks as appropriate; and utilizes chemical extinguishers or hoses to extinguish a fire. 5. Ventilates burning buildings by opening or breaking doors or windows or cutting holes through walls or floors; and forces entry by breaking glass, springing or forcing doors, windows or gates, cutting locks, bars, or wire grating, or breaking walls. 6. Participates in initial arson investigation by preserving evidence and noting the location and condition of related objects upon entry into a burning building; provides oral or written summaries of facts to the Fire Inspector. 7. Assists in salvage work after a fire has been extinguished. 8. Drives ambulance or acts as attendant while responding to routine and emergency situations involving sick or injured individuals; provides medical assistance as an emergency medical technician. 9. May act as an aide to senior officers by transmitting their orders to company commanders or other subordinates at fires by transmitting message by radio, telephone, or fire box, and by being responsible for the proper care of the equipment belonging to senior officers. 10. Maintains contact with dispatch and/or hospital to provide information or obtain assistance in treating medical conditions. 11. Transports sick and injured persons to medical facilities. 12. Performs routine station duties as directed by company officer to maintain the cleanliness, readiness, and appearance of apparatus, equipment, station and grounds. 13. Attends and participates in departmental training drills and sessions in all areas of fire service and operations. 1. Assists in giving tours and demonstrations to the public. 15. Performs other duties as apparent or assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 1. Thorough knowledge of fire fighting and emergency rescue techniques and practices. 2. Working knowledge of the operation and routine maintenance of all firefighting equipment, tools, and apparatus. 3. Extensive knowledge of first aid at the EMT level.. Ability to perform all functions of CPR for not less than 20 consecutive minutes.
2 5. Working knowledge of fire behavior and fire chemistry and the effects of various fuels and materials have on fire. 6. Some knowledge of building construction, wiring practices, fire codes, mathematics, and hydraulics. 7. Considerable skill in operating fire department vehicles and equipment and in the administration of first aid. 8. Ability to react effectively under pressure and to make quick decisions. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. 2. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, sit, stand, push, pull, twist, turn and occasionally run, and to perform movements requiring hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity for extended periods of time under emergency conditions. 3. Ability to use large motor skills to lift and carry patients, victims, and equipment in excess of 100 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing 50 pounds or more.. Ability to ascend and descend ladders, stairs, scaffolds, plies, and ropes and maintain balance while carrying equipment or people. Heights of 25feet are common with occasional requirements of 85 feet or more. 5. Ability to bend the body forward and downward by bending the spine at the waist, bending the legs at the knees, and the ability to move about on hands or knees and feet. 6. Ability to use fine motor coordination and manual dexterity in reaching wit harms and hands, seizing, grasping, turning, feeling, pinching and manipulating objects in the care of patients or use of tools and equipment. 7. Hearing and speaking skills sufficient to operate radio communications equipment under stressful conditions, assess a patient s medical status or communicate with victims or staff in a fire or emergency rescue situation. 8. Ability to obtain precise impressions through the eye of the shape, size, distance, motion, color or other characteristics of objects or fire suppression and patient care. Depth perception, color and night vision, and peripheral vision is required. 9. Ability to work in and around fire, smoke, loud noises, temperature extremes and fumes and with periodic exposure to hazardous chemicals, vibrations, electric shock, and infectious disease. 10. Working ability to use a shovel when salvaging a structure after a fire. 11. Working ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 12. Some ability to smell and differentiate between gas and smoke types. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Must be 18 years of age and currently certified as an EMT or enrolled in a Fire Department approved emergency medical technician course. 2. Must obtain certification as an EMT within twelve (12) months of hire and maintain thereafter. 3. Must have completed Firefighter I and II at vocational/technical college or equivalent within 2 months of hire.. Class B Driver s License required A.D.A. 3 1. The Physical Activity for this job classification: A. Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and the like using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion. B. Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium. C. Stooping: Bending body downward and forward to bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles. D. Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to rest on knee or knees. E. Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine. F. Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet. G. Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction. H. Sitting: Particularly for sustained periods of time. I. Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time. J. Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly throughout the building. K. Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward. L. Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion. M. Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles. N. Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling. O. Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm. P. Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly with fingertips. Q. Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which employees must convey detailed or important spoken instructions accurately, loudly, or quickly. R. Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds and conversation. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and make find discriminations in sound, such as when making adjustments to machines. 2. The Physical Requirements of the position: A. Very heavy work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20pounds of force constantly to move objects. 3. The Visual Acuity Requirements including color, depth perception, and field of vision. A. Mechanics, skilled trades people: This is a minimum standard for those who work deals with machines and equipment, such as lathes, drill presses, power saws, and mills where the job is at or within arm s reach. Also trades people who
4 do work of a skilled, but non repetitive nature such as carpenters, technicians, plumbers, painters, etc.. The Working Conditions the employee will be subject to in this position. A. The work is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. B. The worker may be subject to extreme cold: Temperatures below 32degrees for periods of more than one hour. C. The worker may be subject to extreme heat: Temperatures above 95degrees for periods of more than one hour. D. The worker is subject to noise: There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. E. The worker is subject to vibration: Exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body. F. The worker is subject to occupational hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding, and high places, exposure thigh heat or exposure to hazardous chemicals. G. The worker is subject of atmospheric conditions: One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation. H. The work is subject to oils: There is air and/or skin exposure to oils other fluids.
