Maryland Independent College and University Association Cultural Diversity Survey Due Date: April 23, 2010 Name of person completing survey: Jennifer M. Calhoun Title of person completing survey: Assistant Dean for Strategic Initiatives Institution: Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) Please include response right after each question. General institutional questions 1. Describe efforts the institution has made in the past two years to create an environment of support for underrepresented ethnic groups. The mission of the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON) is to improve the health of individuals and diverse communities locally and globally through leadership and excellence in nursing education, research, practice, and service. The academic rigor of our programs, the extraordinary nursing scholarship of our faculty and our reputation for shaping nursing graduates who are leaders in their profession, position us as one of the top-ranked, research-intensive nursing schools in the U.S. Our strengths lie in the strategic creation of an environment that embodies our goals: Excellence in research, teaching, and practice. Values of respect, diversity, integrity, and accountability. Global perspectives and leadership in nursing and health care. Underrepresented minorities at the JHUSON include all racial/ethnic minorities and men. Our diversity initiatives and plans are focused on increasing diversity of all of these groups. The Faculty Diversity and Cultural Competency Committee includes representation from staff and students at JHUSON: The mission of the Committee has been: To increase awareness within the SON regarding the comprehensiveness of diversity; To move toward increasing self-awareness related to diversity issues for faculty, staff, and students; To promote diversity and cultural competence throughout the SON. The mission was carried out in a variety of ways including planned events throughout the year. The members also acted as resources for faculty for issues related to cultural competency occurred. The major event this committee carries out annually is SON Diversity Week. This event has grown beyond one week and is highly anticipated by SON students, faculty and staff each year. Additionally, this group comprised of faculty, staff and students reviews programs and school-wide feedback and submits an annual report to the School leadership. JHUSON students may participate in a number of clubs and organizations within the School of Nursing, including:

The Bukavu Action Team (BAT) The mission of the BAT is to promote social stability and health in the great lakes region of Africa, and the greater continent, through an international collaboration between Great Lakes Restoration and the students and healthcare workers both at home, within the Johns Hopkins Institutes, and abroad. Along with the School of Medicine and Homewood campus BAT's, the SON BAT works to increase awareness in Baltimore, the surrounding area, and throughout the United States about ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crisis in the Congo. During the 2010 academic year year, projects are focused on fundraising for the animal husbandry program, Pigs for Peace. In the Fall 2010 semester, enough money was raised to provide pigs for more than 30 women and their families. Bienestar Baltimore Bienestar Baltimore is a tri-school organization (JHU School of Nursing, School of Medicine, and School of Public Health) that provides health outreach to the Latino community in East Baltimore in conjunction with the Hispanic Apolstolate, Provision, and Baltimore Medical Systems. Our projects include screening for Tuberculosis (TB), prenatal charlas, and teaching English as a second language classes. Black Student Nurses Association (BSNA) This organization is open to students who are willing to support the goals of encouraging more minorities to enter the field of nursing, promoting professional growth and leadership through participation in professional nursing organizations, promoting professional standards and ethics, making a connection with and providing service to the surrounding communities, providing the opportunity to become acquainted with and enjoying the fellowship of students and faculty whose professional interests are in health and nursing, and keeping the members and the SON informed of emerging trends in health and nursing. Gertrude Stein Society This group is the organization for lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgendered (LBGT) members of the JHMI community, as well as for others who are interested in issues related to LBGT individuals. The organization sponsors both social and research/practice oriented activities. Events include those planned in conjunction with National Coming Out Day, as well as parties and social outings. Jewish Student Organization This organization works closely with Baltimore Hillel and is dedicated to bringing exciting, meaningful and celebratory Jewish experiences to all Jewish students on the campuses of Goucher College, Johns Hopkins University, Towson University, UMBC, and the graduate and professional students throughout the Greater Baltimore Area. Korean Student Association (KSA) The KSA strives to serve the Korean American community at the SON, one of the largest diversity groups at the school. The group's mission is to share unique cultural values of first- and second-generation Korean Americans and to expand Korean cultural knowledge throughout the SON community and the wider community. The KSA is devoted to supporting the Asian and Korean communities through volunteer work and by hosting social and education events. Men in Nursing The Men in Nursing group was established to recruit more men into nursing and

to highlight and promote the role of men in the nursing profession to prospective students and to the community. The group also serves to provide students a supportive environment to present issues and concerns unique to men in the field of nursing. The group offers mentoring services, professional resources, advocacy and social networking. Nurses Christian Fellowship (NCF) NCF is a professional organization and ministry for nurses and nursing students, affiliated with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. NCF brings the good news of Jesus Christ to nursing education and nursing practice. Nursing Students United for Advocacy and Action: The student group, Nursing Students United for Advocacy and Action, serves the JHU community of students, staff, and faculty as facilitators in the discussion and promotion of all peoples, striving for an environment of acceptance, mutual respect and appreciation. They are committed to providing an open forum for diversity concerns, a safe gathering place for all members of the community, and an organized force for advocacy and change Honoring Diversity Week: Faculty and students display items from their cultures, countries they have visited, worked in as well as work research pertaining to cultural issues. Center for Health Care Disparities displayed the work of the center. Assistant Professor, Mary Terhaar s students from the course on spirituality displayed posters on various religions. Faculty representing Men in Nursing were available Monday and Wed. in the carpenter room. Lunch time dance troupe; late afternoon JHU Asian student group performed dragon dance to honor Chinese New Year. Faculty, students, and staff participated with personal displays that showcased aspects of cultures with which they had familiarity, interest, or personal history. The Returned Peace Corps Volunteers showcased countries around the world with a slideshow. Special events included performances by the Meridian Dance Company, African-American leaders from Apostolic Towers, and the Young Women s Drumming Empowerment Project. The celebration ended with Enlighten the Night a talent show exhibiting the diversity of the SON community through various talents. Emphasis on Religious Diversity: The Jewish Students Organization held its annual Sukkah Building party in the School of Nursing courtyard in September, hosted a lunch and learn with a local rabbi on the topic of Reproductive Rights and Judaism, and hosted a Purim celebration for the JHMI community. All JSO activities include students from all East Baltimore schools (Nursing, Public Health and Medicine) and are open to students, faculty and staff regardless of religious background. Please note that our articulation schools include Mt. St. Mary s University which describes itself as the nation s second oldest Catholic University; Stern College for Women which is part of Yeshiva University and is associated with the Jewish religion; and Wheaton College of Illinois which is advertised as a Christian liberal arts college. Loyola College of Maryland and the College of Notre Dame of Maryland are also associated with the Catholic faith. Students from these schools attend the SON and provide a rich background for discourse and shared knowledge about the beliefs and practices of their respective religions. Strategic Communications: The School of Nursing publications, The Daily SON intranet bulletin, Johns Hopkins Nursing magazine, the monthly Nursing News and Research Briefs press release, and The Beat electronic newsletter, serve as proof that the issue of diversity is front-and-center for the School and its leadership team. The Daily SON, the School s daily electronic news bulletin, demonstrates the SON recognition of diversity in many ways, including promotion of diversity week, highlights of famous minority nurses during Black History Month, and announcements from student groups such as the Black Student Nurses Association, Programa Salud, and the Faculty Diversity and Cultural Competence Committee.

Johns Hopkins Nursing, the School s magazine, is an illustration of the SON community and the age, ethnic, racial, and gender diversity among its members. This year s publications featured numerous articles focusing on issues of diversity, including: Keeping the Faith (Spring 2008), which highlights a course for nursing students a diversity of religions and spiritual beliefs; The Future of Chinese Nursing (Spring 2008), a story about the school s collaboration with Peking Union Medical College; Tell us about yourselves, (Fall 2007), a summary of the myriad experiences of our incoming students; and Where in the World is the Hopkins Nursing Student? (Summer 2007), which follows nursing students on their clinical and research experiences around the globe. Nursing News and Research Briefs, frequently carries the School s news of diversity to a wider and more external audience. Issues this year described numerous research publications and grants aimed at populations at risk of disparities in health care, discerning best practices in health care and disease prevention among minorities, and highlighting the work of minority researchers. Throughout the SON building and on the internet website, the images and news carried in the publications reappear in displays of student and faculty accomplishments, background information on the School and its initiatives, and exhibits on the Hopkins Nurse. Fliers appearing on bulletin boards and in the elevators, and posters drawn from magazine pages also recycle many of these images and continue to promote the look and news of a diverse and respectful community. All the print and online publications, and the displays, exhibits, and fliers serve as critical communication links that reach faculty, staff, and student groups, cross the University, and reach out to the nursing and health care communities to convey the SON values of diversity, respect, accountability, excellence, and integrity. Questions specific to students 1. Describe efforts the institution has made in the past two years to recruit a diverse student population? In responding to this question, you may include some of the following examples: To recruit ethnic minorities, the SON Office of Admissions in conjunction with the Communications Office, creates and publishes advertisements geared to minority publications and minority recruiting events. Examples include, but are not limited to: Minority Nurse (Print Ad) provides direct advertising to minority nurses and minorities interested in nursing as a career; Journal of the National Black Nurses Association Nursing Spectrum World View Magazine (Print & Web-based) geared to United States Peace Corps Volunteers Minority students were recruited at events such as: Atlanta University Center Consortium student invited were from Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and Spelman College Bowie State (MD) University Career Fair Hampton (VA) University Graduate Fair

Howard University Graduate Fair Hawaii: University of Hawaii Graduate Fairs Hilo and Minoa Hawaii Pacific University Chaminade University Johns Hopkins University Minority Health Professions Fair New York University Diversity Career Fair 5 th Annual Health Disparities Conference & Fair Baltimore California Forum for Diversity University of California, Irvine California State University, Fullerton California State University, Long Beach University of California, Los Angeles University of California, Riverside University of California, San Diego University of California, Santa Barbara Sacramento (CA) Diversity Day Graduate Fair Transfer Fairs: Anne Arundel Community College Baltimore County Community College Cecil Community College Montgomery College - Rockville Examples of recruitment efforts at professional organizations or groups with high percentages of diverse members include: American Public Health Association Conference Maryland Association of Nursing StudentsMcNair Scholars Program

National Black Nurses Association National Student Nurses Association Convention: both mid-year and annual meeting U.S. Public Health Service Conference In addition, we participated in Idealist career fairs aimed at working men and women seeking to change careers or attend graduate schools. These were held in cities such as Austin (TX), Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York City, Philadelphia, Portland (OR), San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington. D.C. The Office of Admissions has identified possible opportunities to increase minority enrollment next year through such measures as: Identified an Admissions staff member to coordinate all minority recruiting efforts and attend a conference entitled Best Practices in Black Student Achievement at Clemson University to learn best practices for recruitment and retention of minority students. Actively seek invitations to additional events involving minority students. Continuing our visits to Traditionally Black Institutions and attempt to strengthen relationships with academic advisors and student affairs personnel in those schools who could direct students to JHUSON. We will host presentations at these schools. Participate in the Minority Summer Internship Program that exists between the School of Medicine and the School of Public Health; we were invited to join this very late in the game this past year and will seek earlier involvement to identify faculty and interested minority students The annual faculty advisement workshop addresses the implications of known academic predictors of NCLEX failure. The findings also were presented in the orientation programs for new part-time and fulltime faculty. Increasingly, faculty advisors identify students at risk of NCLEX failure and encourage their careful review prior to the examination. Two vendors provided NCLEX review courses at the School of Nursing, and review materials offered by a variety of companies and professional nursing organizations were advertised to the students. 2. How involved are students of color in campus leadership? What is the institution doing to encourage students to become involved in leadership? The Black Student Nurses Association (BSNA) goals are to support retention of black students and build a sense of community for them within the School. The BSNA is open to all students who support the organization s objectives of encouraging minorities to enter the field of nursing, promoting professional growth and leadership through participation in professional nursing organizations, making connections and providing services to the surrounding Baltimore communities, and keeping members of the BSNA and SON community informed of emerging trends in health care and nursing. Each student orientation places strong emphasis the JHUSON Values: Excellence We strive for excellence in everything we do. Set and maintain the highest standards in all activities

Improve upon previous accomplishments through action, innovation, and reflection We value the continual intellectual growth and professional and ethical development of our faculty, staff, and students. Pursue our efforts with diligence and purpose We commit to function at the highest level of ability, education, and interest. Respect The foundation of building and maintaining relationships lies in the respect we show to one another. Honor and acknowledge each individual's contribution to our efforts We appreciate one another's differences and we value the unique strengths that each person contributes. Encourage each other to excel personally and professionally We encourage balance in each other's lives, appreciate one another's needs, and support one another holistically. Foster positive energy We accept and share responsibility for maintaining a collegial work environment. Diversity We embrace our differences in experience, culture, and other aspects as a way to enhance all of our activities. Understand others' unique strengths and limitations, as well as our own We take the time to become aware of one another's background, interests, and assets while actively seeking to understand perspectives different from our own. Create an inclusive environment We recognize the value of and strive to ensure that multiple perspectives are represented in all we do. Learn and grow by obtaining other points of view We actively seek to diversify our administration, faculty, staff and student body to ensure that many different opinions and beliefs are part of and enrich our professional, educational, and personal experiences. Integrity We exhibit integrity in all that we do. Work together for the good of the whole We foster an overall sense of team through a spirit of collaboration and cooperation. Behave honestly, fairly, and ethically We are truthful, trustworthy, and fair in all of our efforts, while holding ourselves and each other to the highest standards of professional and ethical conduct. Promote an environment of openness and trustworthiness We are honest in our approach to one another and those whom we serve. Accountability We are willing to be responsible and accountable for our actions.

Accept responsibility and meet standards at all levels: as individuals, as a group, and as a school We take pride in what we do, accept responsibility for the effects of our decisions, and followthrough on our commitments. Acknowledge and reconcile mistakes We acknowledge our mistakes and use all such occasions as opportunities for learning and growth. Establish clear expectations and provide sufficient resources We participate in defining and clarifying expectations and work to garner resources to support our needs. Questions specific to faculty 1. Describe efforts the institution has made in the past two years to recruit a diverse faculty JHUSON continues to target the National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurse Associations (NCEMNA) annual meeting as an important professional meeting for faculty recruitment. Several minority associations have annual meetings attended by our faculty in a targeted effort to recruit minority faculty members. For the past four years, several of our faculty have attended and recruited at the National Black Nurses Association meeting. We recently started attending the National Alaska Native American Indian Nurses Association Summit. Faculty Mentorship occurs within our three academic departments. The role of each department chair is to oversee the mentoring of the faculty in their department. The administrative manager and staff for each department support the faculty in their scholarship, which was one of the original goals of the mentoring plan. Mentoring matches continue to develop and are reassigned as needed to support the most successful mentorship. It is anticipated that organization of faculty into departments will strengthen the mentoring that faculty receive. Questions specific to administrators (Deans, VPs, etc.) 1. How is cultural diversity reflected in the institution s leadership? Currently, all three of our department chairs are minorities: two African-American and one Korean- American. Additionally, the entire leadership of the School is female with the exception of our Assistant Dean for Information Technology and Integration. The JHUSON leadership nominates for emerging and potentials leaders through internal and external leadership development programs on an on-going basis. In addition to providing fiscal support for attendance of leadership development programs, Every year we have the maximum number of attendees participate in the Johns Hopkins University Leadership Development Program and apply to nationally renowned programs such as the Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellows Program.
