Hydropower dam removal habitat restoration in river Ätran Sweden Ingemar Alenäs Project Manager
The Swedish delegation arrived to Newcastle by airplane If we had taken the water route as the European eel.. Mayor Claës-L Ljung lives by lake Fegen has to pass seven hydropower stations. His chances to arrive safely would have been 0,2 per thousand! EU-coordinator Margareta Gunnarsson lives by lake Tjärnesjön has to pass to stations. Her chances to arrive would have been one out of ten. Project leader Ingemar Alenäs live by river Ätran and have to pass one station and my chances to arrive safely would be one out of three..and returning back home would not have been possible
European Commission: Protection of migratory species is typically a transfrontier environment problem entailing common resposibilities for the Member States. (Goal C-262/85). Herting hydro power dam Migrating salmon and sea trout. Photo: Ingemar Alenäs
Fish Migration in Sweden Problems Physical impact Hydrological connectivity Swedish eel management plan Fishing regulations Good examples in river Ätran: Dam removal Fish safe bar racks Eel ladders Chemical restoration Information Trap and transport
The Salmon auktion payed the salary for the mayor and his staff. This income was more important than all other taxes.
Salmon sea cathes correlated to Ätran Hydro power stations Acidification Liming
Nb water bodies Impact on water bodies in Sweden Ecological status
Lack of connectivity in water bodies Data from VISS 4226 migration obstacles in streams 1406 migration obstacles in lakes 85 % of the water bodies with conectivity problems have hydro power
Hydro Power impact dams and regulation
>95 % of the dams in Sweden have no fish pass >90 % of the hydropower stations have no fish pass 47 % of fish pass works, ca 20 % does not work Dams and hydropower stations have impact on the entire life cycle of migrating fish species. Most continuity actions are financed by the Swedish gorvernment.
Number of dams restored in Sweden
Silver eel studies in Ätran 2011 vs the national eel management plan Catch 2011 Estimated Natonal estimate/year LNS, KU from catch Swedish eel m. plan Lillån Skärhultaån Ätran Mölneby Total Ätran * The Swedish eel management plan underestimate eel production?
Dams in the Municipality of Falkenberg Foto: Ingemar Alenäs
Foto: Ingemar Alenäs Historical eel production areas All rivers and lakes Eel fishery was forbidden but allowed for anyone who could prove an earlier catc of >400 kg.
Foto: Ingemar Alenäs Eel fishery was forbidden in Sweden at Sea and in the lower parts of the watersheds. Eel fishery is allowed in read areas upstream third hydropower dam. Motivation: Eeels cannot pass downstream!
Problem: Hydropower dam Solution: Dam removal
Problem: No fish pass downstream Hydro power station Ätrafors Solution: Bar racks leaning with openings; from 90% dead eel to > 90 % survivors and a more efficient energy production! Win-Win Foto: Ingemar Alenäs Foto: Ingemar Alenäs
Problem: Elvers cannot pass upstream hydro power dams, not mentioned in national eel plans. Solution: Eel ladder at Herting in River Ätran more than elvers saved! Foto: Ingemar Alenäs
Problem: Chemical barriers Solution: Liming Glass eel need ph>7,0 Dies in acid water ph 4,7! Eel production is reduced with 50 % at ph below 6 Photo: Ingemar Alenäs
Problem: Awarness Solution: Information The future in our hand
Bernt misses his eel! His yearly catch of silver eel was but in the 1990s reduced to less than two eels per year, then he stopped fishing. LNS limed his lake and moved elvers SEMP 149 eels per year from 15 lakes with areas from 4 to 175 ha His granddaughter is 5 years old. When she is 18 the silver eel migrates.
Falkenberg is growing for a sustainable future concerning ecology economy and social wellfare
