2 SUMMER READING CHALLENGE AND EVENTS The Summer Reading Challenge 2016 is celebrating 100 years of Roald Dahl! The Big Friendly Read is happening in every library and we challenge all children aged 5 and over to read 6 books over the summer holidays. Collect prizes for each book you read and when you have read all 6 you will get a medal and a certificate! We are delighted to be working with The Roald Dahl Literary Estate and The Reading Agency to celebrate Roald Dahl 100 by running The Big Friendly Read, Summer Reading Challenge 2016 in Explore York Libraries and Archives. I am also really looking forward to all the other activities, meeting some of Roald Dahl s best-loved characters and looking at the amazing artwork of his principal illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake. Have fun as you take part in invention, mischief and friendship! One of our very important aims in Explore is to promote the love of reading to all, but especially to children. Reading is a wonderful thing to do, taking you to different worlds in your imagination or helping you find facts and information to support your own interests. The Summer Reading Challenge helps us to do this and we know that children who have taken part have enjoyed it and grown in confidence with their reading. I hope you all enjoy a great summer holiday and hope to see you at our libraries. Fiona Williams Chief Executive Explore York Libraries and Archives Mutual Under 5 s can take part in our Mini-Challenge. Sign up and get a sticker card and collect a sticker for each book you read. Once you have 6 stickers you will get a certificate! Alongside the Challenge we have lots of fantastic events to be part of which you will find in this brochure. Join us as we explore the themes of Invention, Mischief and Friendship! Look out for our Arts Award Discover Activities and gain a national award over the summer by attending 3 of these activities. Come and tell us about the artists you have discovered at our Big Share Event on Saturday 17th September at York Theatre Royal. 100 children who complete the Challenge will win a gold and jewel encrusted ticket to come to a celebration event at Library on Sunday 16th October. There will be a chance to win other prizes and take part in fun reading activities! Sign up for The Summer Reading Challenge 2016 from Saturday 16th July! All of our events entitle you to one Children s University sticker and you can also collect a sticker for every book you read in the Challenge. 2 Big Friendly Read photographs: Dale Cherry for The Reading Agency with thanks to Crawley Library Summer Reading Challenge and Events 2016 Summer Reading Challenge and Events
