1 TEACHER S GUIDE Teacher s Guides are developed by members of the Nine O Clock Players, an auxiliary of Assistance League of Los Angeles. Committee Chairman: Roxanna Amdur Committee Members: Carolyn Barbian, Judy Jensen Weekend Performances Saturday: December 3 Sundays: November 6, 13, 27, December 4 All performances are at 2 p.m. Ticket Donation: $15 Group Sales, Birthday Parties and Theatre Rentals available Box Office: Website: Notes to the teacher: Guides are distributed to facilitate learning and discussion and to provide an enhanced theatre experience for our audience. These pages have been written with young students in mind so that they will have a better understanding of the production they will be seeing. Seat assignments are predetermined based on age levels of classes. Ushers will ask adults to sit toward the aisles. The suggested activities are consistent with the California Department of Education Academic Content Standards in English Language Arts, Visual and Performing Arts (Music, Dance, and Theatre). 2 THE STORY OF THE MAKING OF A PLAY ACT I: GETTING STARTED First, a Play is chosen, one that is appropriate for young audiences. The Production Chairman then selects the following individuals who will help to tell the play s story: The Director, who plans how to tell the story by using actors who learn dialogue, songs, and dances The Musical Director, who teaches the actors musical numbers and orchestrates the music throughout the entire play The Costume Designer, who creates costumes based on the characters in the play The Scenic Designer, who builds sets to make the different places in the play appear on stage The Prop Designer, who fills the stage with objects (such as tables and chairs) to help the actors tell their stories The Lighting Director, who chooses colored lights to make the sets and stage look like real places The Sound Engineer, who teaches the actors how to use mics (microphones) they will wear during the play The Stage Manager, who helps everyone work together ACT II: THE PLAY COMES ALIVE Actors audition for the parts in the play. They sing a song, read lines from the script and are given a role to play. Beginning with rehearsals, the actors learn their lines, songs and dances, have costumes fitted, learn to use props and move scenery. ACT III: ON WITH THE PLAY.... The members of the audience arrive and are ushered into the theatre. They take their seats and see the pianos and other musical instruments used by the musical director. An announcer says that the show is about to begin and asks the audience to practice theatre etiquette by remaining quiet while the actors are speaking and to enjoy the play by clapping for the parts they like. After the play is over, audience members can talk to the actors and ask them about their characters or the play itself.

3 SYNOPSIS OF THE PLAY: MR. SCROOGE The play opens on Christmas Eve in London, England, in the year On the street outside of Ebenezer Scrooge s office, crowds are bustling about, happily doing their last minute shopping. When Mr. Scrooge emerges from his workplace, the happy mood of the crowd disappears. Scrooge tells everyone that it is a waste of time to enjoy the company of family, friends, and coworkers on Christmas. Ebenezer Scrooge reveals himself to be a cold, unfeeling miser who cares only about money. In contrast to Scrooge, we meet his poor but happy clerk Bob Cratchit and his family, including his frail son Tiny Tim. The Cratchits try to be kind to Scrooge, but all he has to say is, Bah, humbug. That night Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his former partner Jacob Marley. Marley was every bit as greedy as Scrooge and is suffering for his sins in the afterlife. He warns that Scrooge may suffer the same fate. Marley tells Scrooge that he will be haunted by three spirits: the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. These spirits reveal what Scrooge was in his youth and what he has become: a greedy, cruel, and lonely man. Come to the play to see how the visits from these three spirits change the outlook of Mr. Scrooge! BEFORE ATTENDING THE PLAY: THEATRE ETIQUETTE Students who are new to the theatre need guidance in how to behave while attending a play. Some pointers you can share with your students are: How the audience acts is important it helps to make the play fun for everyone. Students must not walk in the aisles while actors are present or try to touch the actor or her props. They can applaud when appropriate, but loud talking or clapping when individual actors are speaking or singing is to be avoided. Audience members may not use any photographic device (flash, digital, cell phone cameras). Please explain to the students the differences between watching live theatre, movies and television.

4 SUGGESTED PLAY- RELATED ACTIVITIES BEFORE THE PLAY: DISCUSSION What are the responsibilities of the actors and the audience? What careers are involved in producing a play? (See The Story of Making a Play in this Teacher s Guide) Do you think you would be interested in any of those jobs? The story takes place in London. Where is London? What ocean would you cross to get there? Charles Dickens was the author of A Christmas Carol, upon which Mr. Scrooge is based. Research his biographical information at the library or online. BEFORE THE PLAY: VOCABULARY Bah, humbug! : an expression of displeasure or disbelief Beggar: a person who asks for food, clothes or money; a needy, poor person Crutch: a support used underneath the arms to help someone walk Foreclosure: loss of a house because it costs too much to pay for Ghosts: the souls or spirits of dead people Knick knacks: things people buy, collect or are given; souvenirs Mercy: forgiveness; compassion; kindness Miser: a greedy, selfish person who does not like to share Workhouse: a sweatshop where children lived and worked for little or no money and not enough food BEFORE THE PLAY: MOVEMENT ACTIVITIES At the beginning of the play, you will hear the song Bringing Home the Christmas Tree. Some people celebrate Christmas by decorating a tree. Have children form themselves into trees and slowly change from a tall, thin tree to a full, bushy tree. A drum beat or musical accompaniment may be added. Discuss the decorations on a tree ribbons, ornaments, bells, etc. Have children form their bodies into ornaments. Encourage them to change the size and shape of the ornaments. In groups, have one person be the tree. Another person can be the tree decorator, placing other children as decorations on the tree. Groups can share their work with the class.

5 BACK AT SCHOOL, AFTER THE PLAY: DISCUSSION, WRITING, SPEAKING Compare and contrast holiday customs as seen in the play to some of those of today. What is your favorite celebration during the year? Why? How would you describe the setting of the play? Identify the beginning, middle and ending of the play. Write a brief narrative of your experience of attending the play. Write an invitation to one of the characters to come and speak to your class. Tell the character what you want the speech to be about. What caused Scrooge s change of heart? What was the effect of this change on him and the others in the play? BACK AT SCHOOL: MOVEMENT During most of the play, Scrooge was angry and unhappy. Have children show angry faces. Have them move about the room as if they were angry. Encourage change of level, direction, size and speed of movement. After Scrooge was visited by the spirits, Scrooge changed into a happy, kind, generous person. Have children show happy faces and move about the room as if they were very happy. Have children move from being mean Scrooge to happy Scrooge. Have them vary the tempo of this transformation.
