1 Overview Point-and-shoot cameras made it possible for just about anyone to take high-quality, 35mm pictures easily and inexpensively. In recent years, personal computers have added a new and exciting dimension to photography. With Kodak Picture CD, consumers can get the best of both. The first product resulting from an effort between Eastman Kodak Company and Intel Corporation, Picture CD combines the quality of traditional film photography with the benefits of digital pictures without requiring consumers to own a digital camera. An innovative, auto-running CD-ROM featuring a magazine software interface developed by Adobe Systems Inc., Picture CD makes organizing, storing, enhancing, sharing and printing pictures on a personal computer simple, automatic, affordable and fun. To get a Picture CD, consumers simply check a box on a retailer s film-processing envelope. For an extra $ $10.95 (depending on service turnaround time), they receive a single CD-ROM that includes high-resolution scans of their pictures (taken with a 35mm or Advanced Photo System format camera) as well as built-in software tools for manipulating their images. All they have to do is pop the Picture CD into the CD-ROM drive of a Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT systems, and the digital images appear on their monitor. Try it Yourself This reviewer s guide includes six short projects designed to help you become familiar with Picture CD s photo editing and enhancement software tools. Sample images are included on the CD. Just insert the disc in your CD-ROM drive; the Picture CD software will automatically launch and guide you through the simple installation. System Requirements Minimum 90 MHz Intel Pentium processor (or comparable) based PC or greater. Minimum 2x CD-ROM drive. 16 MB of RAM. 40 MB of available hard drive space. Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT operating systems. The current issue of Picture CD provides preliminary support of the Macintosh operating system. Macintosh computer users can perform basic viewing, exporting and printing functions. Page 1

2 Project One: Fix a Photo With this project, you ll discover how to perform an instant fix, which automatically improves a photograph s contrast and brightness levels with one click. You ll also remove the red eye effect caused by the camera flash and learn how to crop a photo. Step one: Instant fix 1. Insert Picture CD and launch installation. 2. Click the animated right-arrow button, located on the bottom right-hand corner of the Picture CD s magazine cover interface. 3. Select View & Modify, at the top of the Table of Contents page. 4. Look at the pictures and find one that looks under- or overexposed, or doesn t look as sharp, bright, or as crisp as it could. Select the picture by clicking on it once with your mouse s left button. 5. Click the Enhance button, then the Instant Fix button. 6. Save the improved photograph to a folder on your hard drive by selecting Yes, then click Done. 4. Click the Remove Red Eye button. 5. Select Yes to keep the picture, then click Done. Step three: Trim a photo 1. Using the vertical scroll bar in the View & Modify photo browser, scroll until you find a picture with too much background detail, such as the photo of the baby shown in the illustration. Click on the photo once to select it. 2. Click the Enhance button, then the Trim button. 3. Move the box s four sides with your cursor to zero in on what you want the primary focal subject of the picture to be. 4. Click the Trim button, located near the bottom right of the Picture CD magazine spread. 5. Choose Yes to keep the trimmed photo and click Done. Step two: Remove red eye 1. Select any picture on the CD in which the people photographed appear to have red eyes (a common problem that occurs from camera flashes). 2. Click Enhance; select the Remove Red Eye button. 3. Tighten the white-lined box so that each side is as close to the subject s eyes as possible. To tighten the box, place the cursor on a side and drag it while holding down the left mouse button; repeat until finished. Picture CD s Trim tool lets you remove unwanted Paint with Picture lets you, literally, paint one picture onto another for fun special effects. Page 2

3 Project two: Stylize a Photo The Adobe software tools on Picture CD enables you to add special effects to the digital pictures. The Stylize tools include Posterize, to exaggerate contrasts; Emboss, which creates a raised design effect; Mosaic, for achieving a tiled, blurred effect; Black & White; and Paint with Picture, which enables you to take an element of one photograph and paint with it in another. 1. Select any picture that you d like to paint another photo onto. An example would be a close-up photo of a person s face, which you could then paint another person s face onto (see the illustration). 2. Click the Stylize button, located on the left-hand magazine page; select the Paint with Picture button. 3. If desired, adjust the size of the paintbrush tip by clicking and dragging on the red ball in the slider bar, located near the top right of the magazine spread. 4. Notice the small pick a picture box on the right side of your screen. Click the right (or left) arrow next to that box until the picture you want to paint with appears in the small picture window. 5. Place your cursor on the spot in the larger photo at right you want to paint over. To begin painting, hold down the left mouse button and move your cursor. For example, to create the example illustrated, we selected the photo of the young girl in the pick a picture window. Then we placed our cursor directly over the face of the Statue of Liberty and began painting the girl s face over the statue s. 6. When you ve finished painting, select Yes to keep the stylized photo; click Done. Project three: a picture With Picture CD, it s easy to send photos over the Internet. You can simply attach a photo from Picture CD to an message, without having to switch to an program. Another option is to create an Intel Postcard; the software for sending Intel Postcards is included on Picture CD. For this project, we ll send an Intel Postcard. Note: If you re using a PC connected to a network mail server, disregard the steps below and see the section ing Photos in the Picture CD Read Me file for instructions. 1. Move your cursor over the Picture CD magazine s left-right arrows. From the pop-up Table of Contents menu, select ; select postcard. 2. Click any picture in the browser. Choose low picture quality, at the top right side of your screen. 3. Fill in the From, To, Subject, and Message boxes. Click Preview to Preview. Then click Send Pictures. The Adobe software will automatically launch your Internet connection and transmit the pictures. Note: If you re unable to transmit the pictures following these steps, it may be necessary to manually launch your dial-up Internet connection before you attempt to send the picture. To do so, click on your Internet Service Provider s desktop or Windows Start icon to launch your connection, then begin following the steps in this project. If you can t find an icon for your ISP, go to the Windows Start menu, select Programs, Accessories, and Dial-Up Networking, then choose the networking connection you use to go onto the Net. Project four: Save a picture as wallpaper The Adobe software on Picture CD lets you replace your computer s desktop wallpaper with a photo from Picture CD. (Note: the desktop is the background area displayed on your computer monitor, and the wallpaper is the texture, graphic or image displayed on the desktop, such as the Windows blue-sky-and-clouds image). 1. Place your cursor over the magazine s left and right arrows, just below the curled corner. Wallpaper. 3. On the left-hand page, click once on any picture you d like to select as your desktop wallpaper. Click Apply. Page 3

4 4. The slideshow s default time for changing from one picture to the next is 2 seconds. Change it to For transition effect, select Wipe from the dropdown menu. Check the box next to Loop through slide show to keep the slideshow running continuously. 6. Click the Play Slideshow button to view your creation. When you re through watching, click the Exit button. The ADOBE software on Picture CD makes it easy to replace your computer s standard WINDOWS desktop background with any photo from a KODAK Picture CD. 4. Now take a peek at your Windows desktop to see how the image you chose looks as wallpaper. 5. If you don t want to keep this as your standard desktop wallpaper, click your mouse s right button anywhere on the desktop (don t click on a file or application icon, however). 6. Select Properties from the pop-up menu; select the Background tab if it isn t already selected. 7. From the list, choose the graphic you want as your default wallpaper, then select Apply and click OK. Project five: Create a slideshow With Picture CD, you can create a slideshow that displays on your computer screen. The slideshow consists of multiple Picture CD photos, shown in any sequence you want. 1. Place your cursor over the Picture CD magazine s left-right arrows, at the bottom of the right-hand page. Slideshow. 3. Select any pictures you want to put in the slideshow by clicking on each photo, one at a time. Project six: Print pictures Picture CD software offers many options for printing photos. For best results, refer to the Tips section (you ll find it in the Features section on the Table of Contents page; click Tips to go to that section). The Tips section includes a helpful feature called Get Amazing Prints from Epson. 1. Place the cursor over the Picture CD magazine s leftright arrows, at the bottom of the right-hand page. Print; then select any picture for printing. 3. Underneath the photo browser on the left-hand page, check to ensure that your desired printer is selected. If not, choose it from the drop-down menu. If you need to, check your printer settings by selecting the yellow Printer Settings button. 4. At the top of the right-hand page, select Package of assorted size pictures. 5. Make a selection from the six print size choices, such as Two 4x6. 6. Select Preview & Print to see how your pictures will look on the printed page. 7. Select Print. If you don t have access to a printer, select Close. 8. To exit Picture CD, go to the pop-up Table of Contents page and select Exit or click the x, in the upper right of the Picture CD application screen. Page 4
