2 YOUR GUIDE TO RESIDENTIAL RECYCLING THE UNITED STATES GENERATES MORE THAN 250 MILLION TONS OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE EACH YEAR. EVERY DAY WE SEND WASTE TO THE LANDFILL THAT COULD BE REUSED OR RECYCLED. WHAT IS RECYCLING? Recycling is placing materials into a separate container to be sorted and baled for reuse. Recycling is a partnership. We provide carts and collection, and you provide the recyclable goods. Your help is vital to the success of these goals. did you know? 3 RECYCLING & THE CITY OF ORLANDO HOW DOES THE CITY OF ORLANDO RECYCLE? It s never been easier to recycle! The City of Orlando uses single stream recycling, which means all of your recyclables can be put into one cart. To get your FREE cart, contact the Solid Waste Management Division. CART Your FREE cart will be teal or burgundy which also determines the day your recycling pickup occurs. TRUCK Recycling carts are picked up by our trucks. Trucks dump recycling loads for sorting at the materials recovery facility. MATERIALS RECOVERY FACILITY Material recovery facilities (MRFs) accept single stream recycling and separate the glass, plastic, metal and paper. NEW LIFE Once the materials are separated, they are bundled for shipment to buyers who give recyclables a new life! WHEN WILL MY RECYCLING BE PICKED UP? The City of Orlando is broken up into two recycling zones, teal and burgundy, which are picked up every other week. You can tell what zone you belong to by the color of your recycling cart. Match the color of your cart with the weeks shown on the online calendar and place your cart out before 6 a.m. on your collection day. 6 STEPS FOR EFFECTIVE RECYCLING KEEP PLASTIC BAGS AND OTHER PLASTIC FILM OUT OF THE RECYCLING. PLASTIC BAGS HARM RECYCLING MACHINERY. EMPTY THE RECYCLING DIRECTLY INTO THE CART. DON T BREAK THE CYCLE Plastic bags become tangled in the rolling screen, which can stop the sorting process and cause recyclables to have to be landfilled. They key to our MRF is keeping these bags, and other film plastic, out of the recycling. KEEP IT CLEAN Empty food containers before recycling. Place uneaten food into your garbage or kitchen scraps collector for composting. Keep wet materials and liquids out of the recycling. Empty bottles prior to placing them in the cart. quick tip TAKE PACKAGING MATERIAL & STYROFOAM OUT OF BOXES BEFORE BREAKING THEM DOWN, AS THEY ARE TYPICALLY NOT RECYCLABLE.

7 RECYCLING RULES Recycling being sorted at the Materials Recovery Facility. RECYCLING RULES The following guidelines will help us provide you with better service and ensure collection. Do not overload the cart or place items on top of the cart. Do not place yard waste in the recycling cart. Carts may be placed curbside between the hours of 5 p.m. the night before the scheduled day of collection and 6 a.m. on the day of collection. Carts must be removed from the curb by the morning after your collection. Carts left on the curb on the morning after the scheduled pickup may result in a $25.00 roll back fee. Place carts curbside at least two feet from obstacles such as mailboxes, trees and shrubs, utility poles, meter boxes or parked cars. Do not put hazardous waste such as cleaning materials, oil, paint, pesticides or medical waste in the cart. Do not put garbage into the recycling cart, it will not be collected. Do not place plastic bags into your recycling cart because they tangle the sorting machinery. quick tip DO NOT OVERFILL YOUR CART. PLACE OVERFLOW IN A SEPARATE BOX FOR YOUR NEXT SCHEDULED PICK UP.

Sign up for a FREE composter from the Solid Waste Division and turn that waste into soil instead of sending it to the landfill. Composters can be ordered online and are delivered to your residence. CLOTHING AND TEXTILE Look for textile recycling boxes at grocery stores, parking lots, shopping centers and big box locations.
