2 W o r k i n g l o c a l l y t o e f f e c t c h a n g e g l o b a l l y Hillsborough County F L O R I D A A REPORT ON MANAGING SOLID WASTE IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY SUMMER 2010 FAMOUS BINS CAMPAIGN I n September 2009, the Hillsborough County Solid Waste Management Department unveiled a new education campaign featuring Famous Bins, designed to increase recycling and drive curbside recycling bin requests. The County partnered with the Curbside Value Partnership (CVP), a national invitation-only program that selected our community based on its impressive record and desire for growth in curbside recycling. CVP assisted the County in launching a new web page: The new web page serves as a one-stop-shop for residents seeking information about the County s curbside program. For the first time, residents can go online to request bins, ask program questions, and download fliers and brochures. The campaign also included three months of billboards, bus ads and radio promotional spots, all designed to promote the new website and the ease of getting free curbside recycling bins. It even included a Famous Bins contest in which County residents could enter to win a variety of prizes by going to the website to guess the identities of the different Famous Bins they identified around town. During the first three months of the campaign, the County saw a 552 percent increase in bin requests - an early sign that the new user-friendly website was a hit! Since then, the bin requests have continued to roll in. Over 7,200 households have received recycling bins since the beginning of 2010.
3 GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY CLEAN-UPs The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners provides, through the Solid Waste Management Divison, financial grants for the County s Office of Neighborhood Relations to assist Home Owners Associations with community clean-ups in the unincorporated area of the County and New Tampa. Home Owners Associations may apply for financial assistance to organize community clean-ups (on Saturdays only) for the removal and disposal of: Residential furniture such as couches, chairs, tables, mattresses and box springs Appliances such as refrigerators, ovens, water heaters and window air conditioning units Up to one (1) cubic yard per household of Construction and Demolition Debris such as steel, concrete, bricks, glass and fencing material Yard waste in excess of four (4) feet in length and six (6) inches diameter In addition to covering collection and disposal costs, these funds may also be used to purchase bags, gloves, rakes and fliers to promote the community clean-ups. For further details, please contact the Office of Neighborhood Relations and ask for David Ash at or Wanda Sloan at COMMUNITY OUTREACH If your community is planning an event and would like recycling and anti-litter staff to attend or give presentations, please contact the Solid Waste Management Division at solidwaste@hillsboroughcounty.org or TIS THE SEASON BE PREPARED SHOULD A DISASTER STRIKE If there is a natural disaster, it is important to know what steps to take to better manage your solid waste before and after the event. For more information on this subject, please visit the County s website at resources/publications/managingsolidwaste.pdf or you may call the Solid Waste Management Division at (813) to request the brochure Everything You Need to Know about Managing Your Solid Waste Before and After a Disaster.
