2 Message from the President According to the Environmental Protection Agency, about 80 percent of what Americans throw away is recyclable, yet our national recycling rate is just 28 percent. Here at Auburn, 22 percent of the waste generated is recycled. As an institution of higher education, it is our responsibility to be a leader in the areas of conservation and recycling. We can do that by evaluating how we use our planet s resources and by establishing environmentally friendly practices on the Auburn campus. This publication provides the latest updates for disposing of recyclable materials on campus. 3 Mixed Paper Recycling Bins (desk-side and slim jim bins) The desk-side bin is for collecting clean, mixed paper separately from trash, in academic and office buildings. The larger slim jim paper bin is used in higher volume areas such as copy rooms and mail rooms. Custodians collect paper and take it to centralized bins in each building. Mixed Paper Recycling Guidelines: Acceptable Computer & copy paper, colored paper (staples ok) Magazines & catalogs (glossy ok) Newspaper Phone books Paperback books File folders (no metal hanging folders) Junk mail (plastic windows ok) Sticky notes Shredded paper (ribbon & cross-cut/confetti shred, bagged) Flat, single layer paper board (cereal boxes) Non-Acceptable Paper towels, tissue paper, napkins Paper ream covers (contain plastic) Hardback books (call AU Recycling for pick-up ) Label backing & adhesive labels Paper plates & cups Plastic overhead projector sheets Binder clips 3-Ring binders Spiral bound books Wax paper Foam poster board/foam core Laminated paper Hole punch waste Rubber bands Plastic lined envelopes Padded mail bag with plastic liner Bubble wrap Aubie recycles newspaper in a slim jim paper bin.

4 Plastic and Aluminum Recycling Bins (slim jim bins for plastic bottles #1 & #2 only, aluminum, & steel cans) Building occupants take bottles and cans to bins located in common areas, break rooms, near vending machines, elevators, or building entrances. Custodians collect material and take it to centralized bins. Plastic and Aluminum Recycling Guidelines: Drain and rinse any beverage or food residue. Crush cans and bottles. 5 Cardboard-Only Dumpsters Cardboard Recycling Guidelines: Remove trash and flatten boxes. Building occupants or custodians take cardboard to blue dumpsters located outside buildings. Acceptable Flat single-layer paper board (cereal boxes) Multi-layered, wavy-core corrugated cardboard (tape, staples and labels ok) Non-Acceptable Waxed cardboard (milk cartons, fruit boxes) Plastic liners Foam peanuts Polystyrene end caps Styrofoam Foam core poster board Pizza boxes Special Services Toner and ink jet recycling: Ink jet & toner cartridges can be mailed in small quantities to: AU Recycling Program. Check our website to see if your building has a centralized toner cartridge collection bin. Battery recycling: AU recycling accepts battery sizes AA, AAA, C, & D. For all other types & sizes of battery, contact Environmental Health and Safety (freemms@auburn.edu) Paper recycling during office cleanouts: 95 gallon roll-carts are available from AU Recycling. Place a Work Order by calling Paper shredding (sensitive data, confidential documents, large quantities, etc.): Participate in our quarterly shredding days or schedule a shred date for your department. Pallets recycling: To have pallets picked up, place a Work Order by calling

6 Waste Reduction Tips for Faculty & Staff Avoid printing s, unless absolutely necessary. When printing drafts or s, use the blank side of a once-used piece of paper. Green your meetings by sending out agenda via . Instead of printing agenda and hand-outs, use an overhead projector for your meetings. Keep scanned copies of documents, instead of photocopies. Print on both sides of a piece of paper. Waste Reduction Tips for Students Proof read before printing. Only print what you need. Print on both sides of a piece of paper Print your Power Point notes in outline or notes page form. It saves paper! 7 Solid Waste Services AU Recycling also manages the solid waste contract. If you need extra trash bins for a special event or an additional dumpster for a project or cleanout visit our website for detials on various solid waste services offered on campus. Off-campus Recycling City of Auburn has curbside and drop off sites for Auburn residents. City of Auburn recycles glass. (AU Recycling currently does not offer glass recycling).
