2 Helping you recycle more Recycling has never been more important, we are making improvements to your recycling service so we can all recycle more materials at home. A new food and garden waste collection service is being provided so your food and garden waste can be turned into a valuable resource and avoid it going to landfill. We are also providing a new grey bin for glass, cans and plastics and your blue bin will just be for paper and cardboard. Please put the sticker supplied on your blue bin lid. The day we uplift your black/green and blue bins won t change. To make it easy for you to remember when to put your bins out for collection, we will be collecting your burgundy bin and your new light grey bin on this day of the week too. We have included a calendar at the back of this guide to show you when your different bins will be collected. Key dates to remember: To help us prepare for this new service, your non recyclable waste bin (black/green bin) will be emptied w/c 29 June and again w/c 6 July. Please refer to your calendar which shows your new collection weeks. Your uplift day has not changed but the bins you present have. Please present your burgundy bin on your uplift day w/c 6 July even if there is not much glass in it. We will sticker your bin to remind you that it will now be used to recycle food and garden waste. This sticker also indicates that you should start collecting food waste in your kitchen caddy. Your first collection of food and garden waste in the burgundy bin will be week commencing 13 July and every two weeks thereafter. Frequently Asked Questions Q Why is the service changing? A We are improving the recycling service throughout South Lanarkshire to meet the requirements set by Scottish Government and increase recycling. This means we have to collect certain materials including food waste. Q Why do I need to recycle food waste? A Landfilling food waste is environmentally unfriendly and an expensive way to dispose of waste. When food waste breaks down in landfill it gives off methane gas, which contributes to climate change and is a waste of a valuable product that can be recycled. Recycling food waste will help to ensure we continue to meet the challenges and targets set by Scotland s Zero Waste Plan. Q Will the food in my bin smell? A No, if you follow the guidance for the new service and line your kitchen caddy there will be no problem with smell. Food waste that was previously in your general waste bin is now collected in your burgundy bin with garden waste so that it can be recycled. Q I don t have a burgundy bin, how do I get one? A If you do not have a burgundy bin or it needs repaired, please call immediately or complete the form online and we will deliver or repair the bin for you. Q I receive an assisted pull out service for my wheeled bins, will this continue? A If you currently receive help with your bins we will automatically provide this service for your new bins. 8 9

7 What happens to the materials I recycle? What happens to my food and garden waste? The materials we collect from your blue and grey bins are sent to a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) where different materials are identified and separated. The various materials are then sent to reprocessing outlets where they are turned into new products. Your food and garden waste is collected and taken to a processor then shredded. It is then treated by in vessel composting to produce a high quality compost which we use on local South Lanarkshire Council public spaces. By recycling, together we can save money, support jobs and protect the environment The materials we throw away are valuable and recycling helps the economy by creating jobs locally as well as in the Scottish recycling industry Recycling is more efficient it uses less energy and reduces the carbon emissions compared to using raw materials Recycling reduces the demand for raw materials, helping to protect natural habitats For more information about your waste and recycling services: 8 (
