4 ( the origins ) Marazzi was founded in 1935 in Sassuolo, in an area where pottery had been produced since the 17th Century, which was to become, thanks in part to the input of the firm established by Filippo Marazzi Senior, the world s key manufacturing district, at the state of the art in the creation of high-end ceramic tiles. Marazzi has been responsible for the main technological, process and design innovations that have made the Sassuolo district and Italian-made ceramic tiles a point of reference for the entire ceramic industry world-wide. The use of tunnel kilns in the 50s, the revolutionary patent taken out in 1974 for the single-firing process, which went on to become the world s most widely used production process, the patent awarded in 1968 for Enduro, the first product with high technical performance that extended the potential uses of ceramic tiles, and the patent for SistemA crystallised stoneware in 2010, are just some of the milestones along Marazzi s path to globally recognised technological leadership. 8 ( cutting-edge style and design ) Marazzi was the first company to pick up the need to establish the ceramic tile as a key furnishing and architectural item, placing the responsibility for its styling to some of the biggest names in the world of design, fashion and architecture. Since its first collaboration with master architects Giò Ponti and Alberto Rosselli, which generated the Triennale four-curve tile in 1960, Marazzi has continued to work with prominent designers. 9 ( cutting-edge style and design ) It was the first company to work with leading international haute couture fashion designers including Biki, Federico Forquet and Paco Rabanne, who endorsed the Alta Moda collections in the 1970s, while the artist Nino Caruso was the creative spirit behind Marazzi Forme, the first three-dimensional ceramics modules for architecture. In the 80s and 90s ceramic stylists, architects and designers continued to conduct their experiments in the Il Crogiolo Marazzi creative lab, birthplace of the successful collections designed by Roger Capron and Amleto Dalla Costa. Soho by Marazzi received a prestigious Honourable Mention at the Italian Design Association s 2011 Compasso d Oro awards, the first time this acknowledgment had been assigned to an industrial ceramics product, and it is now included in the Compasso d Oro Permanent Collection. Every tile produced undergoes strict dimensional, mechanical and visual quality controls, both with the aid of cuttingedge electronic equipment and through checking by product sorting and inspection staff. 16 ( quality and environment ) Standard-bearer for sustainable industrial development, Marazzi has contributed to making the ceramic tile production a closed-cycle operation, limiting consumption of natural resources by returning reject materials to the production cycle, recycling industrial wastewater, implementing controlled waste management, optimising energy consumption and reducing environmental impact. 16

17 ( quality and environment ) As long ago as 1994, Marazzi was the first company in the sector to obtain certification of its quality system under the ISO 9001 standard, later followed by ISO certification of its environmental management system. A number of Marazzi product lines have received the European Union s Ecolabel quality mark, awarded to products with low environmental impact throughout their life cycle, while several other product lines, made with a certain % of recycled material, qualify for voluntary product certification by the International Certiquality organisation and meet the requirements for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for sustainable architecture. 17
