1 Statstcal propertes of poston-dependent ball-passng networks n football games Takuma Narzuka, Ken Yamamoto 2, and Yoshhro Yamazak arxv:3.064v2 [physcs.data-an] 7 Apr 204 Department of Physcs, School of Advanced Scence and Engneerng, Waseda Unversty, Shnjuku, Tokyo , Japan 2 Department of Physcs, Faculty of Scence and Engneerng, Chuo Unversty, Bunkyo, Tokyo 2-855, Japan Abstract Statstcal propertes of poston-dependent ball-passng networks n real football games are examned. We fnd that the networks have the small-world property, and ther degree dstrbutons are ftted well by a truncated gamma dstrbuton functon. In order to reproduce these propertes of networks, a model based on a Markov chan s proposed. Keywords : Complex networks; Football; Degree dstrbuton; Truncated gamma dstrbuton; Markov chan Introducton Scentfc studes on sports actvtes have been carred out n a wde varety of research felds such as psychology, physology, bomechancs, and also physcs. Among varous sports events, football s one of the major subjects []. From the vewpont of physcs, studes wth respect to football games are consdered to be classfed nto the followng two types: mechancal and statstcal. In the latter case, goal dstrbuton [2, 3, 4, 5] and outcome predcton of football games [6, 7, 8, 9] have been studed for example. A football game can be consdered as a dynamcal system n whch game players nteract wth each other va one ball. Ball-passng events have been focused on n varous statstcal analyses for the collectve behavor of players [0, ], temporal sequences of players acton [2] and ball movements[3], and passng sequence to goal [4]. In statstcal physcs, analyss for complex networks has acheved rapd development recently [5, 6]. The network analyss has already been appled to football games such as a structural property of ball-passng networks [7, 8], and assessment of players [9, 20]. In the studes of the ball-passng networks [7, 8], each node and edge of the network represent an ndvdual player and passng of the ball, respectvely. One man concluson n ther studes s that ball-passng networks of football games have the scale-free property, namely the degree dstrbutons follow the power law. However, n ther network analyss, the total number of nodes were only, whch was the number of players on a ground n one team. Clearly, t s too few to judge the power-law behavor of the degree dstrbutons. In ths paper we propose another method for creatng a ball-passng network and report statstcal propertes of the network. Snce each player has hs own role correspondng to ther home poston and t s mportant factor for ball passng, we create a poston-dependent network n the next secton. Correspondng author. 2 In secton 3, the structural propertes and the degree dstrbutons of the networks obtaned from real games are examned. We fnd that the degree dstrbutons can be ftted wth a truncated gamma dstrbuton n common. In secton 4, we propose a numercal model based on a Markov chan by ntroducng the ball-possesson probablty. Dscusson and concluson are gven n sectons 5 and 6, respectvely. 2 Method for creatng a ball-passng network A poston-dependent network of ball passng, where the poston of a player n a soccer feld s consdered, was obtaned by the followng method. In order to specfy the poston of a player, we dvde the feld nto 8 areas (sx areas along the goal drecton, and three areas along the vertcal drecton n Fg. ). Note that ths s the same dvson as used n the FIFA offcal statstcal data of 200 World Cup South Afrca [2] and n the reference [2]. An area expressed n the coordnate (x, y) s labeled by the area number A xy = 6(y ) + x ( x 6, y 3). A node s assgned to a player on one of the 8 areas, and labeled by the node number (A xy ) + u ( u ). The total number N of nodes for one team s 98 (= 8 ). When one player passes the ball to another player n the game, two nodes correspondng to these two players are connected by an undrected edge. If more than one passes are made between the same nodes, multple edges are allowed. A ball-passng network s obtaned as the set of the all passes made by one team n a game. To be precse, we use the followng rules. () Only the passes between players belongng to the same team are consdered. () When a player s replaced by a reserved player, the node for the new player s gven the same number as the old player. From Fg., for example, we obtan the network among the three nodes 59(u = 5), 06(u = 7), and 3(u = 0) as shown n Fg. 2. y drecton to goal 3 2 Area 3 Area 4 Area 5 Area 6 Area 7 Area 8 5 Area 7 Area 8 Area 9 Area 0 Area Area Area Area 2 Area 3 Area 4 Area 5 Area Fg.. 3 We focus on the followng basc propertes characterzng the network structure: the total number M of edges, the degree dstrbuton f(k), the average degree k, mean path length l, and clusterng coeffcent C. Here, we consder a network wth multple edges n calculaton of k and k, and a network wth sngle edges n calculaton of l and C. 3 Analyss of real data 3. Structural propertes of the networks We analyzed the fve football games summarzed n Table. The network dagrams of Japan and North Korea n the game () are shown n Fg. 3. In these networks, all nodes are set on ther own areas (the solated nodes are excluded). The edges are drawn n grayscale dependng on the multplcty; the darker one represents hgher frequency of passng. The drecton of offense s rghtward n both panels. We fnd some hubs (node 54 n Fg. 3 (a) and node 26 n Fg. 3 (b) for example). Table. Real game data for the analyss. (These fgures are created by means of Pajek [22].) Characterstc values of each network are summarzed n Table 2. The mean path length l and clusterng coeffcent C are compared wth l rand and C rand of random networks havng the same N and M; they were calculated by averagng over 000 samples. It s found that the sum of the edges of the two teams s almost constant n the fve games, although M of each team largely vared. Snce the tme of a football game s 90 mnutes n typcal, the tme elapsng from one node receve the ball and the node pass t to another seemed to be almost constant for all games. The mean path length 3
4 l s about 3.3 ± 0.3, and s close to l rand = 4.4 ±.7. The clusterng coeffcent C of each network s about ten tmes greater than that of random network C rand. Therefore, these ball-passng networks are consdered to possess small-world property. Table 2. Characterstc values of each network. The sold curves n each panel are truncated gamma dstrbutons. Here, the probablty densty functon f(k) and cumulatve dstrbuton functon F (k) of the truncated gamma dstrbuton are gven as follows: f(k) = λ ν γ(ν, k max /λ, 0) kν e k λ, () F (k) = γ(ν, k max/λ, k/λ) γ(ν, k max /λ, 0), (2) where γ(ν, k max /λ, k/λ) denotes the upper ncomplete gamma functon wth the upper lmt of ntegraton k max /λ, defned as γ(ν, k max /λ, k/λ) = kmax/λ k/λ t ν e t dt. (3) The doman of k s 0 k k max. ν, λ, and k max are fttng parameters for the real data. From Eq. (), ν controls the shape of f(k) exhbtng the power-law behavor, and λ controls the crossover pont between the power-law and the exponental behavors. The truncated gamma dstrbuton has been used for a lfe test [23] and precptaton amount [24] for example. As shown n Fg. 4, F (k) for each team can be ftted qute well by selectng the values of ν, λ, and k max n Eqs. (2) and (3). Actually, the values of ν, λ and k max for fttngs are shown n Table 3. It s found that the values of ν of each network s about 0.34 ± 0.07, and the curve exhbts powerlaw behavor n the low degree part, and exponental behavor n hgh degree part (see Eq. () for reference). The cumulatve edge-multplcty dstrbutons of the networks are shown n Fg. 5 wth sngle logarthmc scale. It s found that each dstrbuton decreases almost exponentally. Then almost 70% of edges have multplcty one.e., sngle edges, and there are a few hgh multple edges. 4

8 4 Modelng and numercal calculaton In the ball-passng network, the degree of each node represents the sum of the numbers of passng and recevng. And the sum corresponds to the frequency of ball possesson. Therefore, the degree dstrbuton shown n secton 3 can be nterpreted as the dstrbuton of ball-possesson frequency. In ths secton, we assume the sequence of ball passng as a random moton of a ball between nodes for smplcty. And, we try to reproduce the degree dstrbuton by focusng on ball-possesson probablty wth a Markov-chan model. 4. Markov-chan model We defne N nodes n the same way as the secton 2, where we treat the two types of feld dvson n order to take nfluence of dfference n feld dvson on the statstcal propertes nto account. Actually, we show the cases of N = 98 and 368 for 3 6 and 2 24 dvsons, respectvely. Now, we ntroduce the ball-possesson probablty a (t) for the node at tme t, and the probablty vector a (t) s defned as Here, ths probablty vector s normalzed as a (t) = [a (t), a(t) 2,..., a(t),..., a (t) ]. (4) We assume that the tme evoluton of a (t) s gven as the Markov chan N = N a (t) =. (5) a (t+) = a (t) P, (6) where P s a transton matrx wth N N elements. Each element P j of P gves the ball-passng probablty from the node to the node j. The transton matrx s also normalzed as N P j = (7) j= for each. Note that the transton matrx s not necessarly symmetrc. A sngle tme step of the Markov chan s a stochastc expresson of a sngle passng event. And a (t) s the average ball-possesson probablty of node after t passng events. (Note that ths average s the ensemble average for many samples). We assume that the ball-passng statstcs after t passng events n the real data correspond to the a (t) wth the same t. For the ntal condton of the tme evoluton, whch corresponds to the kck-off n football games, we consder the case where the ball passng begns wth the player at area (3, 2) n 3 6, and at (2, 6) n Ths condton corresponds to the case that the 98th (452nd) element of a (0) has probablty for 3 6 (2 24) and the others have probablty 0. For the element P j, we assume the followng. () If the two nodes and j represent the same players, then P j = 0; the drbble s not consdered here. (2) Otherwse, namely for and j showng dfferent players, P j conssts of the two factors: P j Q α (r j ) R β,ξ (L j ). (8) Here, Q α (r j ) denotes the factor for the dstance of passes, and represents the dffculty n completng a pass dependent on r j, the dstance between the two nodes and j. R β,ξ (L j ) denotes the factor for exstence probablty of the player recevng a pass. L j represents the dstance of the node j from ts 8

For smplcty, we consder that Q α (r j ) s a step functon wth a threshold dstance α { (r j α) Q α (r j ) = (9) 0 (r j > α), and R β,ξ (L j ) s an exponental functon wth a parameter β and a threshold dstance ξ { (L j ξ) R β,ξ (L j ) = e β(l j ξ) (L j > ξ). 10 4.2 Numercal results We focus on the cumulatve dstrbuton G(a) of a (500) defned as the total number of whch satsfes a (500) a, and compare t wth the truncated gamma dstrbuton. And, we show the dependence of G(a) on Q α (r j ) and R β,ξ (L j ). The reason why we set t = 500 s as follows. We have assumed that the degree of the node n the ball-passng network after t passng events s proportonal to a (t) wth the same t. And the number of passes made n one game s about 500 (see the values of M n Table 2 for reference). The dependence of G(a) on Q α (r j ) s shown n Fg. 7. There exsts a ball-possesson probablty above whch G(a) rapdly decreases, and t moves to the left when α ncreases. However, the shape of G(a) n the small regon does not change largely. Ths property s ndependent of the feld dvson. The dependence of G(a) on R β,ξ (L j ) s shown n Fgs. 8 and 9. Especally for β-dependence shown n Fg. 9, t s found that G(a) s ftted well by the truncated gamma dstrbuton, and ν decreases monotoncally aganst β as shown n Tables 4 and 5. Snce ν obtaned from the real data was about 0.3 for each networks, we can reproduce ths value by choosng β approprately n the model. Table 4. 12 4.3 Networks based on a transtve matrx By determnng Q α (r j ) and R β,ξ (L j ), the ball-passng probabltes between all pars of nodes are obtaned. Usng ths probablty, we can make a ball-passng sequence. Actually we created networks n the way that all pars of ball-passng and recevng nodes were connected by an undrected edge. Here, we focus on the networks of Span, Holland, and North Korea n the real data. We created networks wth the same M as these real networks. It s found that the values of l and C are n good agreement wth those obtaned from real networks where α, β, and ξ are gven as shown n Table 6. Ths result suggests that the Markov-chan model can reproduce statstcal propertes of real data. Table 6. The values characterzng each network obtaned from the numercal smulaton. 13 5 Dscusson The man result of our numercal smulaton s that G(a) obtaned from our model can be ftted wth the truncated gamma dstrbuton as n the case of the degree dstrbuton from the real data. In addton, we have also found that a network created from our model has smlar structural propertes to the real data. Judgng from these results, we conclude that our model ncorporates essental features of real football games. We have also obtaned the result that ν decreases monotoncally aganst β. The shape of G(a) depends manly on R β,ξ (L j ), and the result can be explaned qualtatvely as follows. When β s small, passes are made almost at random because the exstence probablty R β,ξ (L j ) of each node has almost the same value. Then, the values a (t) of all nodes also become almost the same, and the probablty dstrbuton g(a), defned as g(a) dg(a)/da, has a peak as shown n Fg. 0. Ths brngs about the truncated gamma dstrbuton wth large ν. However, as β ncreases, areas where each player can move become lmted. Namely, the number of nodes havng small exstence probablty ncreases, and the peak of the dstrbuton moves to the left as shown n Fg. 0. Such a change of the dstrbuton corresponds to the decreasng of the value of ν n the truncated gamma dstrbuton. Thus, the value of ν becomes small f β becomes large. It s noted that g(a) wthout the peak corresponds to the truncated gamma dstrbuton wth ν smaller than. We can also explan the reason why G(a) rapdly decreases where a s large. In secton 4, we have found that ths behavor appears where ξ s postve. In such a condton, R β,ξ (L j ) s constant n the part of low L j, and a (t) s less lkely to be large. In other words, the cutoff appeared because of the exstence of threshold of the ball possesson probablty. 300 Probablty Dstrbuton g(a) β=0.8 β=.2 β=0.2 β=0.4 β= ball possesson probablty a Fg. 0. Change of the shape of g(a) wth β For smplcty, we have gnored the exstence of the opponent team n ths paper. However, the passng sequence of the real game s nterrupted by opponent team, and t s the superposton of some passng sequences begnnng wth dfferent ntal nodes. We can easly take ths effect nto account. Frst, we add one node whch represents opponent player to the model, and express t as opp. Second, we change the transtve probablty as follows. () If the two nodes and j represent the same players, then P j = 0. (2) Otherwse, P j s defned as: P j ( g) Q α (r j ) R β,ξ (L j ) P opp g () P opp j R β,ξ (L j ) P opp opp = 0, where g represents the probablty of nterrupton by a opponent player. Fgure shows the dependence of G(a) on parameter β where g = 0.5, α =.5 and ξ =.0. It s found that G(a) s ftted well 3
14 by the truncated gamma dstrbuton. Namely, we can obtan the same dstrbuton even f there are the nterrupton of passng sequences. Cumulatve Dstrbuton G(a) β=0.2 β=0.4 ball possesson probablty a β=0.8 β=.2 β=.6 Fg.. Dependence of G(a) on parameter β where g = 0.5, α =.5 and ξ =.0. The factor R β,ξ (L j ) determnes the movng dstance of each player. In the present study, we have assumed that R β,ξ (L j ) s an exponental functon. Other decreasng functons, e.g. lnear, Gaussan, or power-law functons are also consdered. Actually, we confrmed that G(a) can be ftted by the truncated gamma dstrbuton when R β,ξ (L j ) s a Gaussan. However, we cannot reproduce the truncated gamma dstrbuton when R β,ξ (L j ) s the lnear functon and power-functon. Detaled examnaton for the dependence of G(a) on R β,ξ (L j ) s needed. In secton 4, we have also examned the effect of the feld dvson. G(a) follows the truncated gamma dstrbuton ndependent of the feld dvson. In the real data analyss, more detaled data may be obtaned f we dvde the feld more fnely. However, the number of passes s constant n one game, and the degree of each node becomes small when the dvson s more fnely. Hence, t s dffcult to dscuss statstcal propertes of such networks. For our network analyss, 3 6 dvson seems to be sutable way of dvdng the soccer feld. Our fndngs ndcate that the degree dstrbutons n the real data reflect the moton of each player whch s characterzed by R β,ξ (L j ). If t s approxmated by the exponental functon such as Eq. (0), we can defne the characterstc movng dstance L relax as R β,l (L relax ) = /e. From Eq. (0), t s expressed as L relax = ξ + /β. Snce we have obtaned ν = 0.34 ± 0.07 for each teams n the real data, L relax s calculated as L relax =.625 for 3 6 and L relax = 6.5 for 2 24 from the values of β and ξ n Tables 4 and 5. Therefore, the dstance n whch each player can move s very lmted. In football games, each team tres to move the ball to the opponent goal n an effcent way. Then, each player moves around only hs own home poston, and passes the ball. Namely, ths result shows the characterstcs of football that each player has hs own role correspondng to ther home poston. In the analyss of the real data, we have also examned the edge-multplcty dstrbuton, and found that almost 70% of edges have multplcty one, and there are a few hgh-multple edges. The low-multple edges seem to correspond to passes whch are made at random. On the other hand, the hgh-multple edges are consdered to correspond to the routne passes whch are related to the strateges of each team. Fgure 2 shows the heat maps obtaned from the game (). The gradaton of shadng shows the sum of degrees of all nodes on one area. The heat map gves some nformaton about strateges of each team. For example, Japan n the game () uses sde areas many tmes, and t s consdered that ths team often uses the sde attack. Then, edges on the sde areas have hgh multplcty n ths case. The heat maps also reflect the actvty of each team. Actually, Japan n ths game manly makes passes n the areas near the opponent-team goal, whle North Korea makes a few passes n the areas near the own-team goal. Then t shows that Japan domnated the game. Global propertes, such as degree dstrbuton and edge-multplcty dstrbuton, of the ball-passng 4
15 network are smlar n dfferent teams and games, but local propertes are dfferent. In fact, the degree dstrbuton of each team follows the same dstrbuton, and the edge-multplcty dstrbuton decreases almost exponentally, whle the heat maps of each team are dfferent. In ths paper, we have manly focused on the global propertes of networks whch do not depend on the detals of the game. And, the local propertes whch are related to the strateges of each team are also nterestng. drecton to goal 00 drecton to goal 00 "PA_XY_J3_.dat" "PA_XY_J3_2.dat" 80 "PA_XY_N_.dat" "PA_XY_N_2.dat" (a) Japan (b) North Korea Fg. 2. Heat maps obtaned from the game (). The gradaton of shadng shows the sum of degrees of all nodes on one area. We comment on relaton to the prevous studes. Yamamoto and Yokoyama have reported that ball passng forms a small-world network, and ts degree dstrbuton s descrbed by the power-law, power-law wth exponental cutoff, or the exponental dstrbutons [7, 8]. Our poston-dependent network s a natural extenson of the networks n the prevous ones. Moreover, our analyss reveals that the degree dstrbuton can be characterzed by usng the sngle dstrbuton, truncated gamma dstrbuton, whle several dstrbutons were used for fttng n the prevous study. Fnally, some future works are proposed. We can readly obtan drected networks by consderng the drectons of passes. The drected network s expected to represent the defense and offense n football games. For modelng based on Markov chan, a more realstc model can be consdered. For example, snce each player manly moves along longtudnal drecton n real football games, some ansotropc effects should be ntroduced n Q α (r j ) and R β,ξ (L j ). Moreover, the method of creatng networks we proposed n ths paper can be appled to other ball games such as basketball, rugby, and handball. From the vewpont of network analyss, our model s assocated wth the spatal network [25], n whch the nodes are dstrbuted n a D-dmensonal space wth densty ρ(x), and two nodes are connected by an edge whenever ther dstance s less than a gven threshold value. Our model resemble the spatal-network model, n that two nodes and j can make a pass f ther dstance r j s less than α (see Eq. (9) of Q α (r j ) for reference); α works as the threshold. The spatal-network model s determnstc, but our model nvolves a stochastc rule. We expect that statstcal propertes of the ball-passng network are analytcally studed as stochastc spatal network. 5
16 6 Conculuson We have created the poston-dependent network of ball passng n football games n ths paper. Each network has short path length l 3.3 whch s close to l rand 4.4, and hgh clusterng coeffcent C C rand. Degree dstrbuton s ftted well by the truncated gamma dstrbuton. In the Markovchan model, we defne the transton probablty P j as the product of the two factors for the dstance of passes Q α (r j ) and for the exstence probablty of the player recevng a pass R β,ξ (L j ). The ballpossesson probablty dstrbuton reproduces the truncated gamma dstrbuton. Also, t s found that the network created by our model s smlar to those from the real data. 7 Acknowledgements The present work was supported through the Takuetsu Program, by the Mnstry of Educaton, Culture, Sports, Scence and Technology. 6
