1 Parents Information Evening New Points System & Senior Cycle 22 nd September 2016
2 The Points System... The points system is the final selection criteria used; after all other requirements are met, to gain entry into 3rd level education in Ireland. Each grade you achieve in any leaving certificate subject earns you so many points as shown on the points conversion chart. You calculate your points by adding up the points of your six highest subjects. If you have enough points you get the course you applied for. Different courses in different 3rd level institutions all have different points and they vary each year so you should aim for as many points as possible to be sure you have enough.
3 New Common Scale... The new scale does not have equal divisions between each value on the scale. The non-linear scale has been agreed to demonstrate the ability of the scale to recognise achievement while distinguishing between candidates It aims to minimising the use of random selection as candidates results will be both odd and even totals. Each candidate s points will vary. It also aims to encourage and reward the completed of higher level courses
4 Reducing the number of grade bands from 14 to 8 Candidates receiving Leaving Certificate results in August 2017 will have their results expressed in the following new Leaving Certificate grades: Higher Level Grade Ordinary Level Grade H1 (90-100) O1 (90-100) H2 (80 < 89) O2 (80 < 89) H3 (70 < 79) O3 (70 < 79) H4 (60 < 69) O4 (60 < 69) H5 (50 < 59) O5 (50 < 59) H6 (40 < 49) O6 (40 < 49) H7 (30 < 39) O7 (30 < 39) H8 (0 < 29) O8 (0 < 29)
