2 Barnardo s services for schools Engaging children and young people in education is a proven way to fulfil their potential and overcome disadvantage. At Barnardo s we use our expertise to join up the key people in making this possible. Our experience of working with children and young people, as well as their schools and families, means we look at integrated solutions to meet students needs. Our solutions are built to increase attainment and achievement and include: n Alternative provision n Vocational training n Family support n Improving behaviour n School-based counselling n Transition advisers n Extended services n Play and participation n Pyramid clubs. 2 Barnardo s services for schools

4 Barnardo s services for schools: an overview Alternative provision Barnardo s understands the needs of children and young people who do not flourish in mainstream education. We deliver different kinds of alternative provision for those who struggle to engage or have been excluded from school. Our services provide support and enable young people to return to school or enter employment or training. n Improved behaviour in school and reduced anti-social behaviour n Entry into employment, education or training n Satisfactory progress in learning/development goals n Social skills gained/improved n Increased confidence and self-esteem n Reduced levels of risk/harm n Enhanced parent/carer child relationships. Vocational training Barnardo s vocational training centres work with year olds who are disengaged from traditional schooling or interested in developing a vocational skill. Young people work with experienced tradespeople, learning work related skills and attitudes. All courses lead to qualifications which can act as a springboard to further training. n Vocational skills gained n Accredited qualification(s) achieved n Entry into employment, education or training n Satisfactory progress in learning/development goals n Social skills gained/improved. 4 Barnardo s services for schools

5 Improving behaviour Barnardo s uses the Incredible Years model to help children and young people with early behaviour problems. We work with them and their parents and teachers to facilitate the social, emotional and behavioural development of the child. This proven approach shows beneficial outcomes which are maintained in follow up years. n Social skills playing, waiting, sharing, helping and using praise. n Behaviour management skills self control, anger management, understanding rules and problem solving. n Emotional skills understanding feelings, decreasing negative thought patterns and managing conflict. Alternative Barnardo seducation services for Provision schools 5

6 Family support Barnardo s works with schools to engage the parents of children and young people who exhibit signs of problems at home. We work in a non-judgemental way and aim to empower parents by developing their skills, confidence and abilities. This support encourages young people to feel more settled and secure at home and at school. n Improved parenting skills and parent/carer confidence n Positive/improved family relationships and routines n Improved behaviour at home and school n Satisfactory school/college attendance n Satisfactory progress in learning/development goals n Reduced levels of risk/harm n Social skills gained/improved. 6 Alternative Barnardo s services Education for Provision schools

7 School-based counselling Barnardo s provides individual and group counselling to children in their own school. We also work with parents, carers and teachers to help everyone understand the child s feelings and behaviour, and to help the child develop effective ways of coping. The principal aim of the service is to increase pupils emotional well-being in order to improve their learning potential. n Increased resilience and confidence n Improved behaviour and family communication n Satisfactory school attendance n Reduced levels of risk/harm n Positive student attitude to learning. Transition advisers Barnardo s supports pupils as they make the transition from primary to secondary school. Children are introduced to secondary school teachers and pupils, and learn new skills and coping techniques to help improve their self-esteem. The service encourages joined up working between primary and secondary schools, and also provides support to teachers and parents. n Successful transition to secondary school n Reduced stress for the child n Reduced school exclusions n Positive student attitude towards learning n Increased participation and inclusion n Enhanced learning n Family access to support services. 8 Extended services Barnardo s recognises the importance of providing support, activities and a sense of community outside of school hours. We work with schools and clusters to provide swift and easy access to a range of services for 5-19 year olds, their families and the wider community. Activities include holiday schemes, breakfast and homework clubs, links to specialist services and many more. n Children feel more confident in school generally and attainment levels improve. n Increased choice of opportunities for children and young people during term time and in the holidays. n Positive needs-led activities are developed across schools and support is available to carers and parents so they feel confident in caring for their children effectively. Play and participation Barnardo s works directly with schools to improve play work, encouraging children to develop a culture of outdoor play and to carry out a fundamental review of their play culture. Play solutions include managing challenging behaviour and anti-social behaviour reduction, as well as playing to learn. n Enhanced learning n Reduced school exclusions n Positive behaviour n Increased physical and mental health n Increased confidence, independence, participation and inclusion n Improved community relations. Pyramid clubs Barnardo s delivers Pyramid Clubs through therapeutic activity groups in primary schools, to increase the emotional health and self-esteem of withdrawn, underperforming children. Tackling these issues while children are young reduces the chances of more serious problems emerging later on.
