We offer courses in education (with a range of specialisms), adult learning, community development, counselling, mentoring and coaching, organisational leadership and psychology a wide range of options that allows you to select a program that fits your needs. Study on campus at one of three distinct destinations (Clayton, Gippsland and Peninsula) or by off-campus learning, including offshore programs offered through our off shore partner APMI Kaplan ( php) for international students based in Singapore or Hong Kong. You can study full-time or part-time depending on your requirements. Flexibility in course structure provides you with adaptable choices to manage study and work-life-family balance. 4 Professional recognition None of these courses provide an initial teaching qualification, although the LOTE, TESOL and Inclusive and Special Education specialisations in the Master of Education and Postgraduate Diploma of Education courses can be used to qualify you in an additional area of teaching. Students seeking an initial teaching qualification should visit the faculty website for more information about undergraduate and Graduate Diploma of Education courses. The Master in Counselling is a recognised training course of the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and was awarded the Most popular ACA recognised Training Course at the 2005 ACA awards. The Master of Psychology programs are accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC). They have been specifically designed for students who wish to register and practice as psychologists in the fields of counselling or educational and developmental psychology. Completion of the masters programs leads to full membership of the APAC. Pathways to research Postgraduate study is stimulating and intellectually rewarding. The Master of Education program gives students flexible options in their studies. This masters program is an excellent choice for teachers and other educators, educational administrators, managers and policymakers, and others interested or involved in learning and development. Whether you are working within the corporate or government sector, or in the wider educational community, masters programs have the flexibility and breadth to accommodate your needs. The course design is flexible, so you can tailor a program to suit your specific needs. All students complete a core research methodology unit chosen from a suite which gives you an introduction to key social and educational research methods. You will also choose a number of elective units, and have the option of completing a professional project or a minor research thesis in an area that interests you. There are three key options in the Master of Education degree, depending on what you aim to achieve. Option 1: six coursework units. Option 2: five coursework units and a professional project of approximately 8000 words. Option 3: four coursework units and a minor research thesis of approximately 16,000 words. Option 3 provides a great introduction to formal research in education, and can act as a pathway into the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program, provided you meet the grade point entry requirements for that program. To undertake the minor research thesis, it is expected that you will have a Distinction average in your first four units. You can choose coursework units from a wide range of elective units, covering topics in education, counselling, mentoring, gifted education, and curriculum design. You can only specialise in one area. If you choose a specialist pathway, this specialisation will be indicated on your academic transcript and printed on your testamur upon graduation. 3

6 Master of Education specialist pathways Bilingual/immersion education This pathway, available only to cohorts, is designed for teachers and school administrators involved in implementing a content-based immersion program in their school. Students will gain a better understanding of the process of second language teaching and learning in such a context. Specialist studies include: theory and principles of bilingual/ immersion education; establishing, maintaining and evaluating an immersion program; and the classroom and bilingual/immersion teacher. Early childhood Pathway also available in Singapore.* This pathway is designed to meet the professional needs of educators, teachers and other professionals who wish to further their understanding and knowledge of early childhood education from local, national and global perspectives. It provides advanced studies in contemporary theoretical perspectives on the early years in areas such as child and family services, constructions of childhood, ethics, issues, policies and research. The pathway offers students the opportunity to undertake research-based assignments and to network with the early childhood research community within the Faculty of Education and beyond. Gifted education This pathway is designed for teachers, educational administrators, psychologists and other professionals who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of the gifted and talented and appropriate educational provisions. Studies can be chosen from gifted education identification and programming; the psychology of the gifted child; and advanced studies in gifted education. Inclusive and special education This pathway is designed to meet the needs of primary, secondary, adult educators, principals and health professionals interested in developing professional skills for supporting people with a diverse range of special needs. It is also suitable for educators who wish to meet the requirements for employment in special schools. If you wish to teach special education in Australian schools, you must have a separate recognised teaching qualification. Information and communication technology in education This pathway is designed to meet the needs of teachers, lecturers, trainers, educational administrators, educational technologists and policymakers who are interested in the practical and theoretical issues of learning technologies in educational settings. Students develop a research-based understanding of current developments in information and communication technologies in education. It also promotes an understanding of the critical issues concerning these technologies currently being debated in the wider community. International education Off-campus learning only This pathway is designed to meet the needs and interests of educational administrators, teachers, academics, educational service providers and student support staff engaged in all levels of international education. It is also relevant to staff training officers interested in exploring in depth the internationalisation of education. Specialist studies include globalisation and education, internationalising the curriculum, and international education markets. Leadership, policy and change Pathway also available in Singapore.* This pathway is designed to meet the needs and interests of leaders and managers working in a variety of human service organisations who exercise formal or informal leadership responsibilities for the delivery of educational and related services. The pathway gives an understanding of new governance relations; policymaking; and restructured organisational processes and imperatives in the workplace including new concepts of leadership. It also covers effective functioning and design of organisations, resource management, team-based approaches to work tasks, mechanisms for assuring quality of work output, accountability, appraisal systems, and ongoing learning. Literacy studies Off-campus learning only This pathway is designed for educational professionals, including teachers, lecturers, trainers, educational administrators and policymakers, who wish to develop specialist knowledge and leadership expertise in the field of literacy studies. Studies include school literacy practices; language, society and cultural differences and new literacy studies. Mathematics and science education This pathway is designed to meet the needs of teachers, coordinators, text and curriculum developers and lecturers at all levels, who seek to increase their understanding of recent developments in teaching, assessment, curriculum and research in science and mathematics education. The course gave me the qualifications and confidence to apply for a special position with the Yarra Vallley elearning Community Leading Schools Fund Project. I worked in a team to create an elearning Community across seven government schools, creating student-centred learning environments that integrate the use of information and communication technology. Music education Off-campus learning only This innovative pathway is designed to meet the needs of busy music educators at all levels through an introduction to serious research-based study of current developments in music education. It provides a unique opportunity for music teachers and professionals to upgrade their qualifications. There is also the opportunity for a summer field trip to Europe as part of the course. Teaching Languages Other than English/LOTE This pathway, available only to cohorts, is designed for teachers who wish to upgrade their professional practice in LOTE classes and educators who wish to pursue research in bilingual or second language education. Specialist studies include: LOTE methodology; advanced practicum in LOTE language teaching; and issues in curriculum design and assessment in second and foreign languages. Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages/TESOL This pathway is aimed at teachers who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in teaching English as a second language and teaching students from varied language and cultural backgrounds. It is also suitable for language teachers wishing to gain an accredited qualification or for those who wish to pursue research in English language teaching and learning. The program will assist in developing an understanding of the theory and practice of teaching English as a second language in a range of contexts (primary, secondary, tertiary) and the workplace in a country where English is not the official language. Specialist units include theory and practice of TESOL, issues in curriculum design and assessment in second and foreign languages, and advanced practicum in language teaching. To be eligible to teach TESOL in Australia, you must also have a recognised teaching qualification. TESOL International This pathway is designed to meet the needs of overseas or local educators who do not wish to teach in Australia. Students will develop an understanding of the theory and practice of teaching English as a second language in a range of contexts (primary, secondary, tertiary and the workplace), in a country where English is not the official language. Specialist units include: theory and practice of TESOL; issues in curriculum design and assessment in second and foreign languages; and professional practice for teachers of English as a foreign language. To be eligible to teach TESOL in Australia, you must also have a recognised teaching qualification. 8 Postgraduate Diploma of Education Course code: 3210 Duration: 1 year (full-time), 2 years Domestic fee: $15,000 per year of full-time study International fee: $20,900 per year of full-time study Campus: Clayton, on-campus, off-campus, Multimode Intake: First semester/second semester Entry requirements: Applicants must hold an approved three year bachelors degree in a relevant field with a credit average in the final year; or an approved fourth year of study; or an approved four-year bachelors degree; or have qualifications or experience that the faculty considers to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for the above. This course is designed to meet the needs of educators, educational administrators, managers, policymakers and others interested or involved in learning and education within the wider educational community or working in the corporate or government sector. The program aims to help participants focus on teaching and learning in ways that encourages the development of reflective practice and its relationship to ongoing professional learning and growth. Students complete one of two options in the Postgraduate Diploma of Education degree: Option 1: three coursework units (of which one is a research unit) and a professional project of approximately 8000 words. The two coursework units can be chosen from all units offered within the program or may be chosen to form a designated specialisation. Option 2: two coursework units (of which one is a research unit) and a minor research thesis of approximately 16,000 words. Students complete units selected from within the units offered in the postgraduate studies coursework programs. This includes all the units available within the Master of Education course. Students can also undertake any of the specialist pathways available in the Master of Education. This course does not provide a recognised initial teaching qualification. Exit point: Students may also exit the program after successful completion of two units with a Postgraduate Certificate of Education, or may continue on into the Master of Education. Postgraduate Certificate of Education The faculty also offers the Postgraduate Certificate of Education, which allows students to choose two units from those offered in the postgraduate studies coursework programs. Students who successfully complete the Postgraduate Certificate of Education may continue on to the Postgraduate Diploma of Education and Master of Education courses. This program is normally only offered as an exit point from the Master of Education or Postgraduate Diploma of Education programs. 6

9 Master in Adult Education (Global) Duration: 2 years Domestic fee: $14,300 per year of full-time study (Limited CSP places available) International fee: $20,900 per year of full-time study Campus: Off-campus Intake: Annually in August Entry requirements: Applicants need to have one of the following to be eligible for enrolment in this course: an approved three year bachelors degree in a relevant field with a credit average in the final year; or an approved fourth year of study; or an approved four year bachelor s degree; or have qualifications or experience that the faculty considers to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for the above. The Master in Adult Education (Global) focuses on the role adult education plays in understanding and responding to globalising forces and their impacts on workplaces, communities, economies and the environment. The Master in Adult Education (Global) is delivered by experienced academic staff renowned in their field of teaching expertise. Instructors, drawn from the four partner universities; Monash University, Australia, University of British Columbia, Canada, University of the Western Cape, South Africa and Linköping University, Sweden, are highly skilled at developing participant knowledge and understanding of the theoretical foundations and professional skills that underpin adult education and global change. The curriculum covers contemporary changes in work and learning, the role learning plays in understanding and responding to globalising forces and its impact on workplaces, communities, economies and the environment. The program highlights the forms of adult education found in different cultural contexts and ways of supporting adult education in conditions of global change. It encourages the development of critical perspectives on adult education and global change as these are experienced and understood in different parts of the world. Students will draw on their own experience, engage in discussions and work on collaborative projects with students from other countries. Required units in the program are sequenced so that all requirements can be completed in 24 months. All the requirements of the program are completed online; there is no requirement that students attend any meetings or courses on campus. This program is designed to suit those with full-time professional responsibilities. Participants proceed through the program as a cohort drawn from the four participating institutions while working together and engaging in various intercontinental groupings, thereby developing strong global relationships. 10 Master in Applied Linguistics for Language Teachers Course code: 3239 Duration: 1.5 years (full-time), 3 years Domestic fee: CSP places available. Full-fee places $15,000 per year of full-time study International fee: $20,900 per year of full-time study Campus: Clayton, on-campus, multimode Intake: First semester/second semester Entry requirements: An approved bachelors degree with a credit average in the final year, or qualifications or experience considered by the faculty to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for, the above award. A recognised teaching qualification is also desirable. This course seeks to further secondary and tertiary language teachers understanding of applied linguistics, especially as it relates to second and foreign language acquisition and language teaching. It is especially designed for graduates of universities in Japan, China, Indonesia and Korea who wish to teach their language to foreign students in an Asian country. It may also be of interest to teachers of English as a second language. The program can be completed by six coursework units; a combination of five coursework units and a professional project; or four coursework units plus a 16,000-word thesis. Note that this course does not qualify graduates to teach in Australian schools. Exit point: Students may exit the program after successful completion of four units with a Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics for Language Teachers, or after two units with a Graduate Certificate in Education. 8

11 Master in Counselling Course code: 3236 Duration: 1.5 years (full-time), 3 years Domestic fee: $19,250 per year of full-time study International fee: $23,250 per year of full-time study Campus: Clayton, off-campus, Singapore, Hong Kong Intake: First semester/second semester Entry requirements: Applicants must hold an approved three year undergraduate qualification. Please note: those applicants with an approved four year qualification or a three year undergraduate qualification plus two years of relevant work experience may apply for credit for the first two units of the Master in Counselling. The Master in Counselling is an innovative eighteen month program that has been specially designed to fulfil the demand for counselling knowledge and skills from professional people with an interest in counselling. The program provides a professional qualification and real-life counselling expertise for people who may not be practising psychologists or social workers, but who nonetheless have a strong interest in counselling. The Master in Counselling attracts people from a variety of professions such as human resources, health, social welfare and education. Specific objectives of the program are to ensure an advanced level of knowledge about major approaches to counselling; to provide training in counselling practice and develop skills for immediate application in the workplace; and to introduce the study of ethical and professional issues in undertaking counselling as a profession. As part of the Master in Counselling program, students undertake professional placements This placement is undertaken mainly in second semester, although students can begin their non-contact hours in first semester if they wish. The placement consists of 280 hours. This includes 180 non-contact hours, 80 contact hours and 20 supervision hours. Non-contact hours can comprise any duties associated with the placement centre except for actual counselling of clients, such as administrative duties, observation of groups or activities, writing up case notes, research into a particular case or presenting issue or attending meetings. Contact hours comprise actual counselling of clients, or discussing a client s issues with a colleague who has also been involved in counselling that client. The professional placement program provides valuable professional experience to students as well as offering opportunities to make contacts in the field of counselling. This course is a recognised training course of the Australian Counselling Association (ACA). 9

12 Postgraduate Certificate in Mentoring and Coaching Course code: 3705 Duration: 1 year (part-time only) Domestic fee: $7,500 ($15,000 per full-time year of study) International fee: $10,450 ($20,900 per full-time year of study) (off-campus only) Campus: Clayton, on-campus, off-campus Intake: First semester/second semester Entry requirements: Applicants must hold an approved three year bachelors degree in a relevant field with a credit average in the final year; or an approved fourth year of study; or an approved four-year bachelors degree; or an approved three-year undergraduate qualification plus a minimum of two years of relevant work experience. The Postgraduate Certificate in Mentoring and Coaching is a specialist qualification of interest to training and human service professionals, managers, program coordinators, consultants and others, across the corporate, public or community sectors. This certificate course provides a systematic introduction to the theories and practices of mentoring and coaching, and is an excellent option for those who want a formal qualification in mentoring and coaching. The course responds to the widespread introduction of mentoring and coaching initiatives across the community, and the demand for people with the skills and knowledge to design and facilitate successful mentoring programs. Units are structured so that the course will give you: understanding of the methodology, theory and practice of mentoring and coaching; skill development in formal mentoring and project design, co-ordination and review; and an understanding of mentoring and coaching in a variety of contexts. 10

The Master in Organisational Leadership recognises that leaders in organisations are educators and must know about and have responsibility for exemplary leadership skills, the development of their people, effective organisational communication, the mentoring of staff, knowledge management and the application of robust performance management. The program provides students with a systematic and integrated response to organisational processes and imperatives relating to: new concepts of leadership, the effective functioning of organisations, team-based approaches to work, mechanisms for assuring quality, flexible and lifelong learning and organisational designs for the future. The course can be completed by six coursework units; or a combination of five coursework units and a professional project; or four coursework units plus a 16,000-word thesis. Exit points: Students may exit the program after successful completion of four units with a Postgraduate Diploma in Organisational Leadership, or after two units with a Postgraduate Certificate. Current student, Master of Psychology (Counselling)/ PhD The buzz about online delivery seems everywhere, and for Sam Weily, psychotherapy is no exception. I aim to focus on new psychotherapy delivery by way of the internet says Sam. I would like to undertake more research in this area and have an influence on how internet therapy is shaped in Australia. I plan to work in this area with an eventual goal of setting up my own practice Sam is building towards a PhD that he hopes to complete in 2011/2012. To get here I did an undergraduate degree at Victoria University and then moved to Monash for my Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology which I completed in This course has helped immensely in getting an understanding of the skills needed to be working as a psychologist in the real world. This year I have been on placement and that has provided me with some real life experience working as a psychologist. In addition to our course we were able to explore psychopathologies which further fuelled my passion for understanding the human mind. My impression of the Education faculty is that teaching staff get to know their students. Likewise, students in the course form a tight knit bond, and it is great to have their support through out the program. 13

The Master in School Leadership is designed to meet the needs of teachers, teacher leaders, aspiring and incumbent assistant principals and principals. Students will expand their worldview through organisational and environmental perspectives as they develop managerial and technical proficiencies. This course will deepen awareness of self and others. Students will also experience mentor and network support for a professional project of their own design. Throughout the Master in School Leadership students will extend their personal growth; complement professional growth; strengthen scholarship; develop relationships with other leader practitioners; learn to manage by putting theory into practice, establish an ethic of leadership that is grounded in respect, care and professional support; and develop their school, community, region and profession. Students complete 48 credit points, made up of four 12 -point units. Combining full time work and the Master in School Leadership has paid off for Lexia Knight, who now leads the Senior School Team at Westall Secondary College. This course gave me the tools to become a leader in a school. Leadership is a complex creature, and there are so many facets to leading a school effectively. We are a very multi-cultural school and there are many challenges with our students interrupted schooling. The people I have met (through the course) and the networks and friendships we have forged are very special. I keep in contact with several of my peers regularly and we get together to compare notes, offer support and catch up with each other. That has been very important for me. The professional reading also kept me up to date with educational pedagogy I could see where I could implement programs in my school. The program was so challenging and so different to what I expected it to be. I think the driving force of our success was Dr Brenda Beatty. Her idea of emotional leadership thoroughly impressed me. Eventually I would like to work on my PhD with Brenda as my mentor. 17
