SANE Australia A national non-government organisation and the only one that deals with all mental illnesses 1

Prevalence of mental health problems 45% of Australians (16 and 85 of age) will experience a mental illness during their life 1 in 5 (3.2 million) Australian adults will experience a mental disorder in any given year (20%) Anyone can develop a mental illness - no one is immune to mental health problems Most people with mental illness recover well and lead fulfilling lives when they receive appropriate ongoing treatment and support

Prevalence of mental illness 1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental illness every year Annual prevalence by illness type: Anxiety 14% Depressive 6% Illnesses Substance Use 5% Psychotic 1% 3

Cost to Australian workplaces Source: Price Waterhouse Coopers. Creating a mentally healthy workplace investment return on analysis, March 2014

Benefits from workplace programs The benefit of addressing mental health in the workplace is well documented both Australia and overseas. Price Waterhouse Coopers ROI analysis showed that for every dollar spent addressing workplace mental health the average workplace will experience a return of $2.30. The return for manufacturing is $3.50 for every $1 invested Transport, postal and warehousing sector receives an average of $2.80 for every dollar spent 5

Catalyst for creating the Mindful Employer SANE Australia s journey was the result of early research into workplace mental health which revealed: A lack of suitable, flexible part-time work was the major barrier to employment for people with a mental health issue An understanding and supportive employer is the most important factor for people with mental health concerns in keeping their job 6

Further workplace research Australia s Working life and mental illness study : 38 % of had not disclosed their illness to their employer 43 % felt managers did not understand mental illness and how it affected people in the workplace 2013 Australian audit of depression: Almost 50 % of employees have taken time off for depression 2x more Australians had not disclosed depression as the reason for time off compared to Europeans) Over half of managers have no support from a HR department & 29 % have no formal support or resources The stigma attached to mental illness is related to the low rate of disclosure 7

Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance Established in 2013 by the National Mental Health Commission Founding partners The Council of Small Business Organisations of Australia Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry Business Council of Australia SANE Australia Safe Work Australia Comcare Beyondblue University of NSW The Black Dog Institute Australian Psychological Society The Mental Health Council of Australia 8

Ensures awareness of compliance with legislation (privacy, disability and discrimination legislation) 10

Feedback from Mindful Employer Clients I didn t realise I don t need to be a counsellor I feel so much better now that I have been open with my manager Since my team member has disclosed his absenteeism has reduced I feel I have the confidence to ask, Are you OK? Thank-you to my employer for caring enough to run the training I feel more confident talking to/approaching staff 11
