Royal Marines have always been the first to understand, first to adapt and respond and the first to overcome that s the Commando Mindset but today Royal Marines and their families are fighting battles they cannot win alone. We are the Royal Marines own Charity and are uniquely placed to understand, respond and react, enabling Marines and their families to overcome their challenges including life changing injury, life limiting illness, mental disability, transition to civilian life and even poverty. We can target your support across every need to ensure no one is left behind. The Commando Mindset isn t always enough, with your help the Royal Marines Family will win their battles. Our Vision Royal Marines and their families supported through life. Our Mission To provide the best possible through life charitable support for Royal Marines, their families, veterans and cadets. Our Purpose We are a single, unified and integrated charity for the Royal Marines extended Corps family, where cadets, the serving Corps, veterans and families are supported through life with benevolence, comradeship, transition support and amenities, underpinned with a cohesive sense of heritage and esprit de corps HOW THE MONEY IS SPENT 2 Since establishment in 2010, 9.9M has been given in grants towards recovery, quality of life and through life care, and 4M added to investments to provide income cushioning against income fall-off after withdrawal from Afghanistan. The RM Charity needs to raise 2M each year to meet the needs of the Corps Family. After the withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2014, with the military out of the public eye, establishing secure funding streams is vital. 3 CHALLENGE YOURSELF There are lots of ways you can raise money for The Royal Marines Charity; sometimes the simplest ideas are the easiest to make a success. If you already have an idea in mind then that s great. Remember one of the most important parts of fundraising is not the activity, but the commitment to completing it and raising as much money as possible. Whether you re running a marathon or selling a cake, involving your friends, family and colleagues is a great way to turn a small donation into a large-scale team fundraiser. This page gives you just a few examples of ways people have raised money for us in the past. 4 REGISTERING AND PROMOTING THE EVENT Once you have decided on your chosen activity and finalised your plans, make sure you contact Jo at to register your event.this will enable us to send you a fundraising pack with all the relevant sponsorship and results forms. We can also list your challenge on our website. Ask us for details. We are pleased that you have chosen to support The Royal Marines Charity with your fundraising activity, so please make sure that you tell everyone that you are raising money for us. Here are a few ideas of how you can go promote your fundraising event: Tell your friends: Phone, text, , message, tweet or send a letter to them to let them know what you re doing. Create your own materials: Put together some simple posters and flyers to advertise your challenge. If you ve got a friend who s handy on computers, why not ask them for some help. Put them somewhere busy: Ask your local supermarket, pub, church, café, school, library, council, clubs or shops if they have a noticeboard or window they can display your poster. Don t forget to see if you can promote it at work too. Tell the local press: If you think your local newspaper or magazine might be interested in your challenge, why not give them a call to see if they want to run your story. Get it online: Set up a free page on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Go Digital. These pages are easily updateable and can be linked through to your own donation page that you can set up for free on JustGiving. Finally, don t forget the Royal Marines Reserve and Cadets there may be a unit near you. 4

5 SAFE AND LEGAL FUNDRAISING The safety of yourself and the participants at your event is paramount. This page summarises a few key elements to consider when planning and running an event. Insurance: Look into the insurance cover your activity requires and get it sorted prior to the event. The Royal Marines Charity cannot provide insurance for your fundraising activities. If you are using a third party venue, ask the owner or manager about their public liability insurance. Risk Assessment: You will need to undertake an assessment to show what considerations you have in place for the safety of participants. The Health and Safety Executive has information about risk assessments on its website Location: Check that your venue has disabled access and make sure you have permission to use it. Also consider procedures, training and equipment that might be needed for first aid, fire safety and evacuation. As the organiser of your event you are responsible for making sure that it is within the law. Below are a few pointers for how you can make sure your fundraising is legal: Promotional Materials: All your materials must include the words: Raising funds in aid of the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund operating as The Royal Marines Charity. Charity No We are happy for you to use our logo to tell people of the connection between your fundraising activity and ourselves please use the contact details on the back cover to seek permission. However, The Royal Marines Charity cannot authorise you to act as an agent for, or on behalf of, The Royal Marines Charity so your fundraising and publicity materials must not say that you represent us. Businesses: If you are a business and you are fundraising by selling goods, you must have a Commercial Participators Agreement with us. Please see our contact details on the back cover. Collections: If you would like a collection tin for use on private property, please contact us (details on back cover). If you would like to organise a street collection, pub crawl or house-to-house collection you will need a licence from your Local Authority and will need to make sure all collectors are over the age of 16. Again, we can help with this. If you are organising a lottery such as a raffle, tombola or sweepstake there are strict laws concerning what you can and cannot do. For the rules relating to England, Wales and Scotland look at the Gambling Commission s website at and for Northern Ireland, the NICVA publishes guidance at Food and Drink: If you are planning to sell alcohol at a public event, you must check if the venue is licenced. If you need to obtain a temporary licence, contact your Local Authority for advice. For current food hygiene regulations, visit Liability: As you know, we really appreciate what you are doing to raise vital funds for The Royal Marines Charity, but we need to remind you that we cannot accept responsibility or liability for any loss or damage, or any personal injury or death arising out of any fundraising activity, including liability as a result of negligence (except personal injury or death caused by Royal Marines Charity negligence). 5
