1 MTV STAYING ALIVE FOUNDATION Stop HIV before it starts
2 THINK HIV ISN T AN ISSUE ANYMORE? 2m #1 50% 2 million new HIV infections in 2014 AIDS is the #1 cause of death of adolescents in Africa and #2 globally Nearly 50% of all people living with HIV are unaware of their HIV status* *Source: UNAIDS, Executive summary: How AIDS changed everything MDG6: 15 years, 15 lessons of hope from the AIDS response SINCE 2005 WE HAVE: The MTV Staying Alive Foundation is an independent charity that leverages the support and brand of MTV to fight HIV/AIDS among young people worldwide. On the ground the MTV Staying Alive Foundation runs a global grants programme providing funding and training to youth-led organisations working to protect their communities from the spread and stigmatisation of HIV/AIDS. On air MTV Staying Alive is the world s largest global HIV-prevention media campaign aimed at young people, with our programming reaching over 500 million households across the globe, in 100% of the top 50 most affected countries. Educated over 2.7 million people about HIV Distributed over 7 million condoms Trained over 15,000 HIV peer educators Helped over 200,000 people get tested Supported the growth of 538 projects worldwide
3 AN MTV STAYING ALIVE FOUNDATION GRANTEE THE DOVE FOUNDATION There are 2.1 million (UNAIDS 2013) Indians living with HIV today. In the northern Indian states, injecting drug users and migrants from rural areas are most at risk. Young rickshaw pullers leave their families and migrate to cities in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh to ferry tourists around the Taj Mahal, Agra and the sacred Cremation Ground in Varanasi. Many young rickshaw pullers inject drugs and visit local brothels, exposing themselves to HIV. The Dove Foundation uses peer education and street theatre to teach young rickshaw pullers about how they can protect themselves from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. It provides young rickshaw pullers with condoms and makes sure they get tested. Since 2011, the MTV Staying Alive Foundation has helped the Dove Foundation to directly reach more than 10,000 young rickshaw pullers, train almost 800 peer educators, distribute 22,500 condoms, and distribute over 45,000 information, education, and communication materials.
4 KIEHL S AND THE MTV STAYING ALIVE FOUNDATION IN ASSOCIATION WITH The MTV Staying Alive Foundation is delighted to be working with the Kiehl s brand, staff and customers to raise even more money and awareness for our HIV prevention work, reaching more young people in more communities around the world. 7 CHOOSING YOUR FOCUS We will use our own social media channels to promote your fundraising initiatives so tell us WHAT: You may want to fulfill a personal ambition, build your team and do-good in the process or have fun with a group of friends. Whatever the focus, chose something you love if you are passionate and enthusiastic, your supporters will be too. WHY: Tell people why you re fundraising for the MTV Staying Alive Foundation and about the amazing work we do. The more people understand the cause and how their money can help, the more they will support you. WHEN: Whether it s a fixed date, flexible or across a longer period make sure your fundraiser does not conflict with local or national events which may draw your supporters away. WHERE: If you need to secure a space, make sure it will cater for the number of people and type of event, see our legal section for information on permits. 10 THE LEGAL BIT Before you start fundraising take a look at the Code of Fundraising on the Institute of Fundraising website. It gives all the guidelines and information you need to make sure your fundraising is safe, legal and within the framework of recognised fundraising standards. The MTV Staying Alive Foundation cannot accept liability for any loss, damage or injury suffered by you or anyone else as a result of taking part in a fundraising event so please read carefully. Here are some of the key issues to look out for: HEALTH & SAFETY Make sure all venues have been checked for health and safety hazards and ensure there is adequate access for disabled people. Make sure to follow the professional advice of equipment manufacturers as well as supervising staff and have all necessary risk assessments carried out. If you are unsure of your obligations, then please visit the Health and Safety Executive. FOOD HYGIENE Take care when handling food and follow basic rules for safe preparation, storage, display, and cooking. Make sure you label all food carefully and include details of any nuts, dairy, gluten, wheat, etc for people who may have allergies. For more information please visit the Food Standards Agency. BRAND AWARE The MTV Staying Alive Foundation logo is trademarked, so if you plan on using our logo please let us know in advance so we can provide you with a logo license and the correct version. Any materials or communications carrying the MTV Staying Alive logo must be approved by the Foundation before being printed or sent. Make sure that you state that the event is in aid of the MTV Staying Alive Foundation. Please contact us if you have any questions. COLLECTIONS If you re making a collection at your event or you plan to collect money in a public space you may need permission and/or a license from your local authority. Collections made on private property need the permission of the property owner. To ensure your collections meet the required fundraising standards please see the Code of Fundraising or contact a member of the team. DATA PROTECTION Make sure when you keep any electronic or paper record about people that it complies with the Data Protection Act. Try not to keep information about people any longer than you have to and don t share information or data about someone without their permission. If you have any doubts, visit the Information Commissioner s Office. RAFFLES, LOTTERIES AND BINGO There are a variety of laws relating to raffles, lotteries and betting, as well as legal requirements regarding prizes, the costs of running a raffle or lottery and the way they re organized. Events including but not limited to sweepstakes, balloon races, race nights, and spot-the-ball competitions are covered by lottery and betting laws. If you are organizing a quiz or competition where skill is involved in determining the outcome, no registration is required and there is no limit to the prizes that can be offered. Contact a member of the team if you think your event might fall in this category. INSURANCE In most cases, for public and/or hazardous events, you may need public liability cover in place which will protect you against claims made by third parties for injury or property damage as a result of negligence. If you are hiring a venue, check that their public liability insurance covers the owners liability risks and your event. For private events this may not be necessary. Please seek advice if you are unsure. ENTERTAINMENT AND ALCOHOL If your event involves singing, dancing and/or the sale of alcohol check that your venue has the correct licenses in place and that the venue and staff adhere to related laws. You may need a Public Entertainment License. For any queries please contact a member of the team. SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN Any fundraisers under the age of 18 should have the permission of their parents to take part. All adults have a responsibility to protect children. Make sure children are properly supervised and you have made provision for lost children at events.
