Positive Partnerships Research indicates that family involvement in schools increases student achievement (Henderson & Berla, 1994; Ballen & Moles, 1994; Epstein, 1995). It is important to work in partnership to 'get it right for every child'.

Environment Equipment Make sure you have the correct equipment that you will need. The human brain uses more energy starting the job than any other part of the job so make sure you only have to start the once. No distractions If you have siblings you need to find a way that will allow you to work undisturbed.
Home Based Learning Preferably completed at home but in some cases this is not always possible therefore we offer; Before and After school HBL clubs Lunch time HBL club Both of the above are supervised by members of staff in B14 which has access to computers and a printer 1-1 or small group HBL club after school on a Tuesday and Thursday night in Learning Support. Supervised by Miss Yates. Also with access to computers and a printer

A broad & balanced education for all Other stuff Work related activities Main Courses
What other stuff do our pupils do? Hobbies Teams Interests From outside school Sports Academy Sports Teams D of E STEM Club Eco Club Just for fun activities e.g. inter form, art club, puzzle club
Mymaths.co.uk Each pupil will get their own personal logon to access their maths HBL online
Mymaths.co.uk Pupils can follow a step by step lesson on the topic prior to completing their HBL
Mymaths.co.uk Work is marked instantly so pupils receive feedback straight away
Diagnostic questions Teachers set multi choice questions to check understanding and highlight misconceptions
Diagnostic questions Analysing the results, allow teachers to identify areas for further practice to enable pupils to progress.
What is Accelerated Reading?..a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children s independent reading practice. gives both children and teachers feedback based on quiz results which the teacher then uses to help children set targets and direct ongoing reading practice.
How DOES it work? Pupils take initial STAR test The test uses multiple-choice questions that adjust depending on your child s responses. After completing the STAR test, pupils are given a ZPD mark (Zone of proximal development). The expected range in year 7 is
Time to read Minimum time recommended
After pupils finish their book The pupil takes a computerised quiz that assesses their literal comprehension of the book s characters, events, and literary features. The score, generated by the computer, gives the pupil immediate feedback.
After the quiz Pupils should aim to get 85%. Pupils results will mean they can move up in their ZPD. Pupils will receive certificates after making progress at the end of every term.
Intervention Subject teacher action - Use diagnostic reports to identify pupils who are not taking quizzes / reading Subject teacher intervention - Mentoring of pupil during library lesson - Listen to pupil read - Support pupil in choice of text - Form tutors can do exactly the same.
Accessing books The Library is open between 9am and 3:10pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Pupils supported in choice of text by teachers and librarians Non-fiction and non-ar reading also encouraged Pupils are encouraged to loan subject-specific books recommended by all teachers Pupils are encouraged to suggest new titles for the Library
Book level corresponds to students ZPD scores Parents and students can view book ratings Refined search includes level and genre options
Raise Your Child s Attendance! Raise their Chances! Be in to Win! What does good attendance mean?
Do you know what your child's attendance is? Do you know what it means??
A pupil has 90% attendance. Is that good? What does this mean?
90% sounds good however 90% attendance = ½ day missed every week!!
Let s look a little closer.. September July at 90% attendance = 4 whole weeks of lessons MISSED!!! 100 lessons missed September May at 90% attendance = 2.5 weeks of lessons MISSED!!!
What impact might this have on your child s results? Research suggests that 17 missed school days a year = a GCSE grade DROP in achievement. (DfES) The greater the attendance the greater the achievement.
Punctuality The school day starts at 9am. Pupils must be in their form room or assembly for 9am and in the afternoon must be in their afternoon lesson for 2.10pm 3 x lates = after school dt 6 x lates = after school dt and every time after this incurs an after school dt
If your child arrives after 9.30am Morning registers close at 9.30am. After 9am a pupil is marked as late. After 9.30am a pupil is marked as unauthorised unless medical evidence e.g appointment card is shown. Penalty Notices for 10 unauthorised marks in one term or 14 unauthorised in two terms

Ways for parents/carers to encourage good attendance and punctuality: 1. Find out regularly what your child's attendance/punctuality record is and check this matches with your own record. 2. Talk regularly with your child about school and how they feel about it. They are more likely to attend if they feel supported and have their anxieties listened to.
3. Phone us by 9.30am on the first day of your son/daughter s absence. 4. Only grant days at home for genuine illness. (you will know!!) 5. Make dental/medical or other appointments outside school hours. 6. Do not book holidays unless exceptional circumstances complete leave of absence form and seek Headteacher s approval.
6. Know routines of the school day to avoid issues, e.g. have they got their PE kit/food ingredients? 7. Make sure your son/daughter is in school on time ( 8.55am for 9am start) 8. If you have concerns ring us we will check attendance and be discreet 9. PRAISE and REWARD GOOD ATTENDANCE and PUNCTUALITY
Attend and Achieve! Please help us and your child by ensuring their attendance remains above 97%, allowing them to achieve their potential.
Social Networking For or Against? Social networking is a topic that divides opinion - some people think it's an amazing tool but others are worried about the impact it has on people's lives.
Not understanding the boundaries and repercussions of appropriate online behaviour can lead to problems in the real world. Explicit pictures or video footage can be used by peers to bully, threaten and blackmail or can end up in the hands of sexual predators. Parents can keep their children safe by using parental controls, checking history on the computers, using apps to filter ( type in parental controls on app search to browse).

Safeguarding Concerns The unknowing porn star: Student, 20, speaks of her fury after photos were stolen from her Facebook profile and used to promote a sex website A girls pictures were used to advertise a casual sex website She only found out after it was spotted by a friend of her mother Now she's calling on women to check their Facebook privacy settings
Safeguarding Concerns How Some Pupils Are Using Snapchat Some teens may send harmless pictures of themselves being goofy, others are using the app for much more insidious purposes. For example, pupils carry out sexting, or send sexually explicit photos, thinking they have nothing to worry about because the photos disappear from the app. Meanwhile, other pupils are snapping shots in locker rooms and bathrooms and sending those. Meanwhile, other pupils are sneaking around trying to catch embarrassing shots of others to send on to someone else. Still others are using it to cyberbully. They send something mean and then the message disappears without any evidence that the bullying took place. The general thinking is, what s the harm the picture is gone in 10 seconds. But that s not always the case. While the images do disappear from the app itself, there s nothing built into the app to stop kids on the receiving end from taking a screen shot and saving it or using another device to take a picture of their cell phone screen.
