1 Forever Stories Workshop Pilot Program Bundaberg Regional Libraries Duration: Four morning sessions at two and a half hours in length and a Show and Tell Morning Tea event, taking place over one week in the school holidays. Desired outcome: To create two to three videos of approximately two minutes in length based on local stories from the Wide Bay region. Target audience: The stories will be shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and Storytellers. Participants of upper primary school and high school age will work in small groups of two to four. Session One: Aim: To welcome participants, share project goals, introduce principles of digital storytelling, form teams and plan videos using storyboards. Time: 10:00am. For staff: Ensure Attendance form is filled in and Photo Consent and Copyright Licence forms are given to each participant. Ensure participants are aware these are to be completed by their parents/ guardians (if they are not attending workshop session) and returned the following day. Allow four hours for the session including set up and packing away. Tip: Have someone document the process by taking photos and videos. workshop, event signage. 9:45-10:00am Greet participants, complete attendance sheet, provide them with Photo Consent form and Copyright Licence agreement. 10:00-10:15am Welcome participants, Workplace Health and safety, housekeeping and introduce team Introduce Workshop Goals: Respect others and work together. Create a video slideshow of a local story/stories illustrated by the workshop group. Learn new skills, including illustrating a story, photographing artwork, recording audio and editing a video. Share our videos online. 10:15-10:30am Share video examples of traditional and contemporary digital stories told and illustrated by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Copies of all forms and pens. Data projector, laptop with internet connection, preloaded video examples (can be from YouTube or 1
2 10:30 10:45am Share transcripts of the local stories recorded prior from local Elders and Storytellers. If possible invite Elders and Storytellers to attend and tell their story to participants. 10:45 Participants share morning tea and discuss 11:00am the stories and key images. 11:00 11:15am Participants form groups and select the story each group wants to recreate. Agree team names. 11:15 12noon In teams storyboard the chosen story with key scenes, characters and settings and plan who will do which illustration tasks. 12:30 1:00pm Pack up and tidy for the next session. Ensure a selection of illustration materials are provided so participations can be creative in their art making. Allow 4 hours for set up and packing away. Tip: Continue to document the process. One of the songs was recorded and later used in the documentary of the workshop. 10:15-10:30am Revisit storyboards created by each team Storyboards, prepared 10:30 10:45am during the previous session. Agree who will create each character and background and a palette for the story (for a unified look and feel) and commence illustrating. 2 transcripts of stories. 3 10:45 11:00am 11:00am 12 noon Participants share a working morning tea while. Participants continue illustrating characters and backgrounds for their stories in teams. Session Three: Aim: To photograph backgrounds and characters for digital stories and record narration and/or character voices and sound effects for the story. Time: 10:00am For staff: Work out who will supervise which activity and scout for a quiet location without too much background/ ambient noise to record audio. Tip: Continue to document the process and schedule time to conduct interviews with participants and the project team. Prepare interview questions for the participants and the team so they have notes to speak to and some may like to practice their responses before the camera is turned on them. Create a video slideshow of a local story/stories illustrated by the workshop group. Videos will be 2-3 minutes in length. Learn new skills. Illustrating a story, photographing artwork, recording your voice/filming you telling a story, and editing a video. Share our video online. Arrange morning tea so each group can snack while working. 3
4 10:15-10:45 Have three activity stations with three facilitators and work with each of the teams to either: a) Photograph their backgrounds and characters as per their storyboard from Session One with the ipads. b) Practice and record the audio narration and character voices. c) Complete video titles and credits for their group s story with art materials. 10:45 11:15 Each Group rotates activity. As above. 11:45am 12 noon Participants interview each other on ipads. 12:30 1:00pm Pack up and tidy for the next session. ipads, an ipad photo station (a table with lights is ideal), a photo enhancing app like Snapseed, an audio recording app like Wave Pad or Sound Cloud and art materials. ipads, pre-prepared interview questions. For staff: Ensure ipads are charged and all files from the previous session are saved and accessible. Demonstrate imovie app to participants and how to add and edit photo and sound files to create a video. Arrange morning tea so each group can snack while working. Participants work in teams to create their digital stories. Finalise Titles and Credits, take images of teams to incorporate in stories. Finalise participant interviews. Run through what will happen at the morning tea, including how they will speak to their videos. Remind participants to invite friends and family members. Session Five: Community Show and Tell Morning Tea Aim: Time: 10:30am 12:00 noon For staff: Invite a Traditional Owner to deliver a Welcome to Country. This may incur a fee. Tip: Test your videos and audio before your event 9:00 10:15 am Set up for event.
