With the extensive coverage of the Singapore s transit system, it provides an excellent platform for artists to reach out to the community and showcase the artistic talent of Singapore to the world. The Art in Transit programme integrates art into architecture and artworks are functional, accessible and engaging with the daily lives of many people. Above all, the artworks offer future generations a collection of works that speak eloquently about Singapore s history and culture. Top: North East Line Chinatown station. 2 ART IN TRANSIT IN SINGAPORE The Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) System is one of the most modern and efficient mass transit facilities in the world. It is also the most visible and intensely used public infrastructure in the nation. Art has been incorporated in the Singapore MRT since the first phases of the MRT. Stations such as City Hall and Raffles Place have artworks integrated with the station finishes. Building upon this legacy, the Land Transport Authority established the integrated Art in Transit programme on the North East Line in The North East Line Art in Transit programme brings the works of some of Singapore s top artists into the MRT stations and the lives of all who use them. Building upon the success of the North East Line Art in Transit programme, LTA commissioned a younger generation of artists for the Circle Line. More recently, LTA launched the Downtown Line Art in Transit programme, which will feature artworks by both commissioned artists and those selected through competition in all thirty-four stations when completed. 2 Top: Circle Line Dakota station. 3 OBJECTIVES OF ART IN TRANSIT PROGRAMME The Downtown Line Art in Transit programme will continue to fulfil the programme objectives established since the North East Line. Create dialogue with the local community Community involvement, through direct participation in the creation of the artworks or via art themes that celebrate local life and culture are preferred. Enhance stations and the surroundings Integrated artworks enhance the station interiors aesthetically and act as visual signposts for commuters in the underground transit spaces. The art shall resonate with the historical, cultural and architectural settings of the vicinity giving the station a unique identity. g Produce highest quality integrated artwork that everyone can enjoy The Art Review Panel will review all artworks and ensure that a consistent high standard is achieved for all artworks. Use standard construction method to ensure artworks are procured at reasonable cost All artworks shall be manufactured using standard construction materials which are durable and fire resistant to ensure that they will endure the passage of time with minimum maintenance cost. 4 ART REVIEW PANEL The Land Transport Authority has appointed an Art Review Panel (ARP) to provide guidance to the Art in Transit programme. Their expertise and advice to the artists will ensure the artworks are developed to their full potential and successfully integrate with the stations. The ARP will also form part of the review panel for the commissioned artists and judging panel for the art competitions.
