3 Grade 5 Visual Arts Page 1 Introduction This document was designed to provide a framework for connecting the Seminole County Public Schools curriculum to the Florida Sunshine State Standards. Each Objective in this curriculum guide is identified as either Mastery or Developmental. Mastery is defined as the consistent demonstration of an objective at a minimum of 70%. Developmental objectives are those to which the student will be introduced, have initial instruction, and an opportunity to practice and apply the skill. Seminole County s objectives were designed to encompass Florida s Sunshine State Standards and Grade Level Expectations. Each Objective is correlated to the appropriate Sunshine State Standard(s). The following gives you an example of this coding and how to read it. SC.A Subject Strand Standard Grade Level Benchmark The Sunshine State Standards are located at the end of this curriculum guide.

4 Grade 5 Visual Arts Page 2 Grade 5 Visual Arts Standard 1 Skills and Techniques The student will understand and apply media, techniques, and processes. Goal 1 Media, Techniques, and Processes The student understands and applies media, techniques, and processes. 1 Produce Works of Art Mastery The student will utilize drawing, painting, printmaking, fibers, sculpture, and ceramic media to produce works of art. 2 Develop and Refine Drawing Skills Mastery The student will develop and refine drawing skills using a variety of media such as crayons, markers, pencils, charcoal, and colored pencils through direct observation. 3 Experiment with Paint Mastery The student will experiment with paint on various surfaces using previously learned skills and techniques. 4 Utilize Advanced Printmaking Processes Develop The student will utilize advanced printmaking processes such as three-color reduction, and/or silkscreen prints. 5 Experiment with Advanced Textile/Fiber Techniques Develop The student will experiment with advanced textile/fiber techniques such as quilting, basketry, papermaking, etc. 6 Apply Sculptural Techniques Develop The student will apply sculptural techniques such as bas relief, armature construction, and/or soft sculpture. 7 Utilize Clay Techniques Mastery The student will utilize clay techniques such as slab and coil construction.

5 Grade 5 Visual Arts Page 3 8 Experiment with Computer Technology Develop The student will experiment with computer technology skills to create works of art. 9 Work with Tools Safely Mastery The student will work with art tools and materials safely. VA.A Use a Variety of Tools Mastery The student will use a variety of tools, materials, and processes, and develop a respect for each. VA.A Consistently Follow Directions Mastery The student will consistently follow directions, instructions, and clean-up procedures. VA.A Demonstrate the Elements of Art Mastery The student will demonstrate how the elements of art affect the principles of design (e.g., color/contrast, line/rhythm, shape/balance, etc.). VA.A Compare and Contrast the Principles of Design Develop The student will compare and contrast how the principles of design are used in works of art to create organizational and/or aesthetic effects. VA.A Assess Good Craftsmanship Mastery The student will assess qualities of good craftsmanship. VA.A Apply Good Craftsmanship Mastery The student will apply good craftsmanship through skill development and practice. VA.A.1.2.4

Goal 1 Creates and Communicates a Range of Subject Matter The student creates and communicates a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas using knowledge of structures and functions of visual arts. 1 Use Experience to Create Art Mastery The student will use personal experience, observation, and imagination to create works of art. VA.B Use a Variety of Subject Matter Mastery The student will use a variety of subject matter/symbols based on themes to create works of art. VA.B Analyze Effective Use of Media Mastery The student will analyze effective and ineffective use of media, techniques, and processes. VA.B Communicate an Idea Mastery The student will select media to effectively communicate an idea. VA.B Utilize Techniques to Communicate an Idea Mastery The student will utilize techniques and processes for selected media to communicate an idea. VA.B Explain Intentions in Art Mastery The student will explain intentions in personal works of art. VA.B Identifies Function of Symbols Mastery The student will identify the function of symbols in works of art. VA.B Analyze Cultural Art Mastery The student will analyze the function of cultural works of art (masks, totem poles). VA.B.1.2.3

VA.B Analyze Fine Art Mastery The student will analyze the function and influence of fine art (works of art in museums, galleries, studios, and public places). VA.B Develop an Effective Composition Mastery The student will plan how the elements of art and principles of design can be used to create a composition. VA.B Communicate an Effective Composition Mastery The student will select, modify, and organize elements of art and principles of design to communicate an effective composition. VA.B Build Color Theory Knowledge Develop The student will build on color theory knowledge such as monochromatic, complimentary, analogous, and tertiary. VA.B Communicate an Idea Develop The student will demonstrate the use of value to communicate an idea. VA.B Show Proportion and Scale Develop The student will improve skill in showing proper proportion and scale. VA.B Improve Skills to Communicate Ideas Develop The student will build on and improve previously learned manipulative skills to communicate an idea. VA.B.1.2.4

Goal 1 Relation to History and Culture The student understands the visual arts in relation to history and culture. 1 Compare and Contrast Works of Art Develop The student will compare and contrast works of art on the basis of styles, time periods, cultures, and/or artists. VA.C Analyze and Describe Artworks Develop The student will analyze and describe specific relationships that influence the creation and function of artworks of various people and cultures. VA.C Identify Various Cultures Develop The student will identify and demonstrate knowledge of various cultures and time periods. VA.C Sequence Works of Art Develop The student will sequence works of art, artists, and historical events on a timeline. VA.C Identify Characteristics in Art Work Develop The student will identify characteristics in artwork that indicate cultural influences (e.g., ceramic vases with Grecian designs, weaving with a Mexican color scheme). VA.C Explain Visual Arts Can Communicate Develop The student will explain that visual arts can communicate historical and cultural values. VA.C Make and Study Works of Art Develop The student will demonstrate knowledge of how history, culture, and visual symbols influence each other in making and studying works of art. VA.C Use Sources to Learn About Artists Develop The student will examine and use informational and literary text, multimedia, and internet sources to learn about artists, various cultures, and time periods. VA.C.1.2.2

Goal 1 Characteristics of Works of Art The student assesses, evaluates, and responds to the characteristics of works of art. 1 Evaluate Using Appropriate Vocabulary Develop The student will apply and build the process (define, analyze, interpret, and judge) for the evaluation of works of art using appropriate vocabulary. VA.D Judge Works of Art Develop The student will discuss different approaches (economic, cultural, functional, historical, religious, and popular) to respond to and judge works of art. VA.D Analyze Genre in Art Develop The student will analyze the similarities and differences of genre in art (fine art, folk art, popular art, and commercial art). VA.D Standard 5 Applications to Life The student will make connections between the visual arts, other disciplines, and the real world. Goal 1 Connections between Visual Arts and other Disciplines The student makes connections between the visual arts, other disciplines, and the real world. 1 Examine Aesthetic Qualities of Art Develop The student will examine and discuss aesthetic qualities and functional use of everyday objects and works of art. VA.E Compare and Contrast Art Develop The student will compare and contrast works of art that elicit critical thinking and/or emotional responses e.g., visual propaganda. VA.E Analyze Effects of Art Develop The student will analyze how art impacts everyday life (e.g., fashion, interior, and automotive design). VA.E.1.2.1

VA.E Compare and Contrast the Function of Galleries Mastery The student will compare and contrast the purpose and function of galleries, studios, and museums. VA.E Discuss Art at Galleries Mastery The student will examine and discuss works of art at galleries, museums, and/or artists' studios. VA.E.1.2.3

Skills and Techniques Standard 1: The student understands and applies media, techniques, and processes. uses and organizes two-dimensional and three-dimensional media, techniques, tools, and processes to produce works of art that are derived from personal experience, observation, or imagination. VA.A uses control in handling tools and materials in a safe and responsible manner. VA.A knows the effects and functions of using various organizational elements and principles of design when creating works of art. VA.A uses good craftsmanship in a variety of two-dimensional and three-dimensional media. B. Creation and Communication Standard 1: The student creates and communicates a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas using knowledge of structures and functions of visual arts. VA.B understands that subject matter used to create unique works of art can come from personal experience, observation, imagination, and themes. VA.B understands what makes different art media, techniques, and processes effective or ineffective in communicating various ideas. VA.B knows how to identify the intentions of those creating works of art. VA.B uses the elements of art and the principles of design with sufficient manipulative skills, confidence, and sensitivity when communicating ideas. C. Cultural and Historical Connections Standard 1: The student understands the visual arts in relation to history and culture. VA.C understands the similarities and differences in works of art from a variety of sources. VA.C understands how artists have used visual languages and symbol systems through time and across cultures.

VA.D develops and justifies criteria for the evaluation of visual works of art using appropriate vocabulary. VA.D uses different approaches to respond to and to judge various works of art. VA.D understands perceived similarities and differences among different genres of art. E. Applications to Life Standard 1: The student makes connections between the visual arts, other disciplines, and the real world. VA.E understands the influence of artists on the quality of everyday life. VA.E knows the types of tasks performed by various artists and some of the required training. VA.E understands the similarities and differences and the various contributions of galleries, studios, and museums.
