1 How to use Google Earth to view Mineral, Placer and Coal Titles in British Columbia This tutorial is a step-by-step guide to view mineral, placer and coal titles in British Columbia. This data is powered by Google Earth and can be accessed in a few easy steps using DataBC s Data Connection Services. Perhaps you are a miner wanting to see this information draped on a 3D terrain model. This tutorial will help you use Google Earth & DataBC s Data Connection Services to display the information. The DataBC team and the Mineral Titles Branch have been working together to improve this data connection for clients. Google Earth can be downloaded for free, and there is no cost to access the data. 2 HOW-TO 1. From the DataBC website click the Geographic Services tab, then click Connect 2. Find the Mining and Petroleum category in the connection services list and click on the blue Google Earth icon to download the Google Earth file. 3. In Google Earth open the file you downloaded in step 2. A BCGov - Mining and Petroleum WMS folder will appear in your Temporary Places folder: Page 2

3 4. Zoom to your area of interest on the Google Earth globe, or search for a nearby town in BC in the top left corner: 5. Click the checkbox next to the layers you want to view. Let s turn on Mineral Tenures Page 3

4 Lillooet, BC, with mineral tenures appearing in the bottom left Tip: The tenures will take a few seconds to draw. Zoom in closer to speed it up. 6. Using Google Earth s tilt tool (middle mouse click and drag) we can change the angle of our view to look at the tenures at an oblique angle: Page 4

But how do I know who owns the claims, or when they will expire? TENURE DETAILS ARE JUST A CLICK AWAY For mineral, placer and coal tenures, click on the interactive label dots to reveal detailed information: Page 5

6 Details for mineral claim We can now see that Jedway Enterprises is the owner and that this mineral claim is valid until May 27, EVEN MORE DETAILS ARE JUST ANOTHER CLICK AWAY Hyperlinks that link directly to Mineral Titles Online (MTO) are included in the pop-up window Clicking on the hyperlink will take you to the MTO page for that tenure with additional information Page 6

7 DATA AT YOUR FINGERTIPS The BCGov Mining and Petroleum WMS folder provides access to a variety of additional data, including: Assessment Reports Mineral Reserves Oil and Gas Titles Exploration Potential Rankings Karst Topography Information And there s much more! For example, if you wanted to see if a Mineral Reserve exists in your area of interest, you would turn on the following Page 7
