4 Welcome to IT Services! If you have just arrived you may have lots of questions and queries which you'll need answering. We're here to help you with any query you might have. The Service Desk will be your first port of call for anything related to IT and our team of friendly staff will be happy to assist you as best we can. Just some of the things we can help you with include: accounts Passwords Device compatibility i.e. smart phones and tablets Laptop problems Printing and photocopying Software requirements Wi-Fi systems across the campuses Whatever the issue is just come and ask our friendly team. When you arrive: It is worth going through the checklist below to make sure you have everything you need to get started: Have you enrolled? -This will normally be completed before you arrive on campus. If you are unsure whether you've completed your enrolment and you're a student at Falmouth University you'll need to contact Student Records in the first instance -student.records@falmouth.ac.uk. If you're a University of Exeter student, please contact the Exeter helpdesk on helpdesk@exeter.ac.uk or Have you completed your IT Registration? - This follows straight after the enrolment process so if you've completed your enrolment it's likely you've completed your IT registration. 7 Services available for you IT Services offer various services and facilities for students. Some of which are listed below. Loan Laptop Service IT Services have a selection of Windows laptops and MacBook Pro's available for loan. Laptops can be booked out online using Connect 2 or contact the Service Desk for more information. Laptop Clinic Service We hold regular laptop clinics at Falmouth and Penryn campuses and will do our best to resolve software related issues on your personal equipment. Booking is essential! Please contact the Service Desk to make an appointment or for more information. Printing You can print to any IT Suite printer from any of the Macs or PC's in the suites in colour or black and white. However, you ll need to buy print credits first! You can buy print credits online using the payment portal - or by using one of the print top up machines around campus. With our FIND ME printing facility, you can print now and collect later from any of the Konica photocopier / printers in the suites. When you are ready to print, just select the FIND ME printer from the printer list and then when you are ready to collect your print outs swipe your ID card on a Konica printer. It is also possible to print directly from your own computer using the WebPrint facility - For further information please visit the printing section of this guide on page 11 or contact the Service Desk. 6

8 Available software To support you in your studies you will have access to a variety of software in the IT Suites across both campuses. Pop into the Service Desk to find out what's available or check out our website - Help is at hand! We have a range of information leaflets available on paper or online to guide you through the most frequent issues we find new users facing. Why not come and meet our friendly team in person and find out how we can help. IT Inductions Sign up to one of our free, half hour long sessions. Our friendly IT Services staff will provide you with the information you need to get started. We will be on hand to answer any query or concern you may have. 9 IT Account Information Falmouth University Students You will be issued with a username and password when you join the University as a student. If you are a new student you will receive your username and password by from the Admissions department. You will then be required to enrol and complete an IT registration in which you will be required to change your password to something of your own which is memorable to you. Your username will remain the same and cannot be changed. Information on how to enrol and complete the IT registration will be sent to you by Admissions prior to you starting your course. If you have any problems using your log in details or you are unsure what they are, please contact the IT Service Desk on or servicedesk@fxplus.ac.uk. You will need your campus account credentials to access your student account, log into the IT Suite computers and Wi-Fi, so it's important to keep the information safe. You must never give your campus account information to anyone else or let anyone else use a computer using your details. Resetting Your Password If you forget your password you can reset it using our online password changer - You will need your student number and date of birth in order to use this online password changer. Alternatively, you can contact the Service Desk to get your password reset. You will need to provide your date of birth or home postcode for security when contacting the Service Desk to get your password changed. Please note that you cannot change your username, this will remain the same throughout the duration of your studies. If you forget your username please contact the Service Desk. University of Exeter Students If you are a University of Exeter student, please visit the University of Exeter website to view information on your IT account. 8

10 IT Suites We have various IT suites across both Falmouth and Penryn campus available for students to use. These include both open access IT suites and bookable rooms. We have various software available in these IT Suites to support you in your studies. Details of the software available in the IT suites can be found on our website - If you have any questions, please contact the IT Service Desk or check out our website for more information. Direct line: (ext. 3822) servicedesk@fxplus.ac.uk Laptop Clinics To support your academic and study needs, IT Services runs a popular Laptop Clinic service to help you solve problems with your personal computer. Penryn Campus Clinics are held every evening in the IT Support Office, Level 1, The Daphne du Maurier Building between 5pm - 9pm and at weekends between 10am - 6pm. Falmouth Campus Clinics are held every Wednesday afternoon in the IT Office based in Fox 1. Booking Booking for laptop clinics is essential and can be made via the IT Service Desk. Once a booking is made, you will be required to read and agree to the terms and conditions and sign the agreement form. This will be given to you either when the booking is made or at the time of your appointment. Laptop Loans We have a laptop loan service available at both Penryn and Falmouth campuses. Penryn Campus 15 Microsoft Windows laptops with Microsoft Office Apple MacBook Pros with Microsoft Office

11 Falmouth Campus 5 Microsoft Windows laptops with Microsoft Office and Adobe Master Suite 6 3 Apple MacBook Pros with Microsoft Office and Adobe Master Suite 6 16 Apple MacBook s with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite 6 Booking Bookings need to be made using our online booking facility Connect 2. Details of how to book, as well as the terms and conditions of booking, are available to download from the website. 10

12 Printing There are various printing facilities on both Falmouth and Penryn campuses - located in most IT Suites and across the libraries. In order to use the printing facilities you will first need to obtain print credits. Print credits can be purchased online or via cash loaders (which accept notes and coins) found in the following locations: Penryn Campus Main IT Suite Library (near the helpdesk) Design Centre (near the model suite) Peter Lanyon building (Humanities & Politics IT Suite) Falmouth Campus Library IT Suite, Fox 3. Printing Costs A4 Black & White = 4p A3 Black & White = 8p A4 Colour = 26p A3 Colour = 52p The printers available on both campuses also have facilities to photocopy and scan. Please note that scanning is free and you will not need print credits to do this. Printing From Your Own Laptop You can also print to any of the campus printers using webprint - This is particularly helpful during busy periods when the IT suites are full. Print Now, Collect Later You are able to print your document(s) and collect at a time convenient to you at any of our Find Me enabled printers. This is helpful during busy periods in the IT 11

13 Suites. Using the Find Me printing facility ensures that your work does not get lost. The Find Me facility is easy to use. Just select the Find Me printer when printing your work and collect at a suitable time by swiping your card at any of the Find Me enabled printers on campus. 12

14 WI-FI FXNET Secure wi-fi The Wi-Fi connection across both the Falmouth and Penryn Campus is called FXNET Secure. Network security is of paramount importance to Falmouth University and Falmouth Exeter Plus and FXNET Secure WI-FI has been designed with security in mind. As well as offering a secure service, there are other benefits to using this WI-FI connection: A simple and quick connection process Minimal chance of service failure Problem machines which could be at risk will be detected and removed from the network quickly Improved performance Initially, you will need to configure your device to access the new FXNET Secure WI-FI. Once your device has been configured, all you need is your university username and password to connect. The relevant documentation to guide you through this configuration process is available to download on our website or from the service desk. The Service Desk team can also assist you to connect your device for the first time and will be running short sessions throughout the year for groups of staff and students experiencing problems connecting. Wi-Fi is available to students throughout both campuses and within the Glasney Village. RESNET The RESNET Wi-Fi connection is available within the Glasney Village. You will be required to register your device in order to connect to network. For information on how to register, please check page numbers in this handbook or view our website - UoE Secure If you are a University of Exeter student, the Wi-Fi connection is called UoE Secure. More information on how to connect to this can be found within the Wi-Fi section on page 13 of this handbook or on the University of Exeter website

15 Please note that you are not allowed to use file sharing software (e.g. Limewire, BitTorrent, and UTorrent) on your computer when using the University Wi-Fi connection. Using such software will result in your Internet access being blocked. As some online games automatically update themselves via file sharing software, to prevent your connection from being temporarily blocked, please make sure you deactivate automatic updates. Tuke House Wi-Fi is not available within Tuke House. Each student living at Tuke House will be provided with an ethernet cable in order to connect their computer via a wired connection. Check out our information on students living in Tuke House on page 20 of this booklet, or more details on our website for more information. 14

16 IT Information for students in Glasney Welcome to your new accommodation. Within this document you should find all the information needed to get your internet connected. During your first week at University your first port of call if you have any problems connecting to the internet in your room will be Glasney Lodge. IT staff will be located here between Thursday 10 th September until Sunday 20 th September to help you with any issues you may have when setting up your internet for the RESNET WI-FI. If you experience any connection problems after these dates, please contact the Service Desk who will be able to help. 15

17 How to connect your computer to the RESNET WI-FI The WI-FI connection in Glasney accommodation is called RESNET. You will need to make sure you are connected to this WI-FI. To access RESNET WI-FI in accommodation you will need to register your device. This is very important. If you do not register your device you will not be able to access the internet. Helpful info on registering your device. You can register as many devices as you like e.g. I ipads/tablets/phones/laptops If you do not register your device within the first 3 weeks of moving into your accommodation you will no longer be able to access the internet. Your internet access will not be available again until you register! You are not allowed file sharing software on your computer when using the University WI-FI connection. Using such software will result in your internet access being blocked (examples of file sharing software are Limewire/BitTorrent/UTorrent etc.) If we detect a virus on your machine your internet access will be blocked and you will need to book an appointment with IT to have your computer looked at. Please don't panic we are here to help you! There will be IT staff available in Glasney Lodge during the first week of term, they are there specifically to help you connect your computer to the WI- FI and assist you with registering your device if you have any problems. Please do not be afraid to ask if you need help. You can also contact the Service Desk for help at any time during your studies; we can be contacted by phone/ /in person. 16

18 How to register your device. It's a good idea to register your device as soon as you connect to RESNET WI-FI. However, if you don't manage to do this you will be automatically redirected to the device registration page after the first 3 weeks of term. To register you will need to visit You will be prompted to log in using your username and password. Notice the 'where do I find my MAC address' link, clicking this will direct you to a set of instructions on how to find your MAC address on various devices. Once you have logged in you will need to fill in some information about your computer. 17

19 Your New Device Please remember that you are responsible for all theinternet traffic that your device generates.never register a device on behaof someone else. 20 You will also be able to view details of previously registered devices. You will need your mac address to register what's that I hear you ask?! Don't worry; there will be information available on the device registration page explaining how to find your mac address on various devices and a little video showing you what to do. This information can also be found on our website Once you have registered your device you will need to restart your device and wait up to 10 minutes before it becomes 'active' on the system. The next time you log in it should connect automatically and will not prompt you to enter your username and password. If you require a network cable to connect your desktop computer/games console/other device please collect one from Glasney Lodge. If you have any problems please visit Glasney Lodge in the first instance to see someone from IT who can help you connect. If IT are unavailable please contact The Service Desk. 19

21 IT Information for Students in Tuke House Welcome to your new accommodation. Within this document you should find all the information needed to get your internet connected. During your time at University your first port of call if you have any IT related query will be the IT Service Desk. During Saturday 5th September 2015 an IT technician will be available at Tuke House to assist you with any internet connection problems. In addition to this we have put together some helpful information which should assist you during your first few weeks of term. If you have any questions which are not covered in this handbook please contact the service desk. An Internet connection is available in your room via a wired connection. Internet access for other wired devices is available, such as your games console. To connect to the internet in your room you will require an ethernet cable. Ethernet cables will be provided for you in your room in Tuke House. To connect the cable you will first need to locate the network socket in your room. Access to the network is through the Cisco 7912 IP phone which is provided in each room, or a spare wall network socket. You will need to plug in your Ethernet cable from your computer into the back of the phone, or to the network socket on the wall. If you are using a phone, the socket you are looking for is on the underside of the phone. 20

22 You will see that there is already a cable attaching the phone to the wall, you will need to use the spare port next to this, labelled 10/100 PC. Attach your network cable securely, don t force it, but press gently until you hear a click. Now securely attach the other end of the Ethernet cable to your computers Ethernet port (which will be on the back or side of your laptop as shown) Once you have everything connected you should be able to access the internet. When you click on your internet browser you will be prompted for your username and password. During the first three weeks of term you will be able to access the internet by entering your log in credentials. However, after this initial period, you will be required to 'register your device'. 26 How to access your Falmouth University As a Falmouth University student, you have a university account for life (hosted by Microsoft Office 365). Your address will start with your username and finish e.g. gr123456@falmouth.ac.uk You have a storage limit of 25 GB plus access to store your documents using SkyDrive. It's important to check your student mail on a regular basis as important college information, announcements and course information will be sent to you.
