5 Chapter 1 General Information CHAPTER 1 GENERAL INFORMATION This chapter provides general notes for the product. About This Manual This manual provides information for installing and operating DXE421 Ethernet COM Server Unit. This manual introduces some application examples. ESD Protection Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can cause immediate or latent damage to electronic circuits. Vaisala products are adequately protected against ESD for their intended use. However, it is possible to damage the product by delivering electrostatic discharges when touching, removing, or inserting any objects inside the equipment housing. To make sure you are not delivering high static voltages yourself: - Handle ESD sensitive components on a properly grounded and protected ESD workbench. When this is not possible, ground yourself to the equipment chassis before touching the boards. Ground yourself with a wrist strap and a resistive connection cord. When neither of the above is possible, touch a conductive part of the equipment chassis with your other hand before touching the boards. - Always hold the boards by the edges and avoid touching the component contacts. 4 M210608EN-A

9 Chapter 2 Product Overview CHAPTER 2 PRODUCT OVERVIEW This chapter introduces the features, advantages of the product. Introduction to DXE421 The DXE421 unit has a small enclosure of 20 mm x 80 mm x 76 mm with DIN rail mounting support that can be connected into various enclosures. The DXE421 has face connectors where the power supply, RS-232 and Ethernet line can be connected. See Figure 1 below. 11 Chapter 3 Operation CHAPTER 3 OPERATION This chapter contains information that is needed to operate this product. Installation Install DXE421 unit onto a DIN rail. Make sure that connection between the DIN rail and the grounding point is good. Figure 2 DXE421 and Terminal Connect the Ethernet line cable to DXE421 Ethernet interface RJ45 connector. Connect the serial cable between DXE421 and PC COM port or ROSA, MILOS, MAWS or etc. Connect the power to DXE421. Make sure that polarity of power cable is correct. The over-voltage, short-circuit and reverse connection protection are included in DXE421. VAISALA 9

12 User's Guide Configuration MAC address. The DXE421 unit's MAC address is on the product label. MAC address: a- - - IP address. The DXE421 unit must have a unique IP address on your network. The systems administrator provides the IP address and corresponding subnet mask and gateway. IP address: Subnet mask: Gateway: The recommended way to configure the DXE421 unit is to use a terminal program. The default serial line settings for DXE421 are: N 1. Connect the RS-232 serial cable between the DXE421 unit and the computer's serial port in accordance with Figure 2 on page 9. NOTE When initial configuration has been done and DXE421 is connected to the network, it is possible to make configurations through a Telnet connection. From the DOS prompt give the following command: C:\telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 9999 (where xxx is the IP number and 9999 is the port number.) The easiest way to enter the setup mode is to hold down the X key and switch on the power. The following text will appear on the screen: MAC address 00204A Software version 01.6 (040308) XPTE Press Enter to go into Setup Mode Press ENTER to proceed. 10 M210608EN-A

13 Chapter 3 Operation Server Configuration This section gives instructions on how server configuration of the DXE421 should be done. The following menu is displayed: Change Setup: 0 Server configuration 1 Channel 1 configuration 3 settings 5 Expert settings 6 Security 7 Factory defaults 8 Exit without save 9 Save and exit Your choice? 0 Choose 0 for server configuration and give the following IP settings in accordance with the provider information. IP Address : (172).(025).(010).(072) Set Gateway IP Address (Y) Y Gateway IP addr (172).(025).(000).(001) Netmask: Number of Bits for Host Part (0=default) (16) Change telnet config password (N) N Netmask is given in numbers of bits in the following way: equals equals equals 8 The Telnet password disallows configuration of DXE421 using Telnet through network without the correct password. It does not affect the serial line configuration. The password can be three letters long. Serial Port Configuration This section gives instructions on how the serial port from DXE421 should be configured. In the menu, select number 1. Make the following selections: Baudrate: The default setting is The baudrate can be 300, 600, 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, and I/F (Interface) mode: The default setting is 4C. 4C RS-232C, 8-bit, no parity, 1 stop bit 78 RS-232C, 7-bit, even parity, 1 Stop bit Flow control: The default setting is No flow control 01 XON/XOFF flow control 02 Hardware handshake with RTS/CTS lines 05 XON/XOFF pass characters to host Port number: The default setting for Port 1 is The port number identifies the channel for remote initiating connections. 15 Chapter 3 Operation Reserved (77F0h) Reserved (77FEh) Connect mode: The default setting is C0 (always accept incoming connection, no active startup). The connect mode defines the communication method used with DXE421. NOTE A DXE421 unit can be in C0 connect mode, no matter if the connection is made directly from the PC to Ethernet or from the PC via a serial port using the DXE421 unit to Ethernet. Figure 3 Standard Connection If a serial port from the computer side is used for communication to Ethernet (see Figure 4 on page 14), then select Modem mode, set the Connect mode to C6, D6 or D7. C6 No echo D6 Echo with full verbose D7 Echo with one character response This means that user can make a connection to the weather station over internet using any terminal program. This allows also remote software downloading to for example a ROSA station using the Iceterm program. VAISALA 13

16 User's Guide Figure 4 Modem Mode Connection Standard Connection From the PC the connection to the unit can be created by giving the following command from the DOS prompt: C:\Telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx yyyyy Where xxx is the IP number and yyyyy is the defined port number. Modem Mode Connection If the connect mode has been set as modem mode (C6, D6,D7), the connection is made by sending the following command to the serial port using, for example, with a terminal program or some other polling program: ATDTxxx.xxx.xxx.xxx,yyyy Where xxx is the IP number and yyyy is the defined port number. Application, DXE421 and ROSA Open a terminal connection to ROSA and give the following settings: Set the baud rate for RS-232 line to 9600: BAUD RS Set the communication mode for plain RS-232: COM RS M210608EN-A

Fax Return Instructions If the product needs repair, please follow the instructions below to speed up the process and avoid extra costs. 1. Read the warranty information. 2. Write a Problem Report with the name and contact information of a technically competent person who can provide further information on the problem. 3. On the Problem Report, please explain: - What failed (what worked / did not work)? - Where did it fail (location and environment)? - When did it fail (date, immediately / after a while / periodically / randomly)? - How many failed (only one defect / other same or similar defects / several failures in one unit)? 20 User's Guide - What was connected to the product and to which connectors? - Input power source type, voltage and list of other items (lighting, heaters, motors etc.) that were connected to the same power output. - What was done when the failure was noticed? 4. Include a detailed return address with your preferred shipping method on the Problem Report. 5. Pack the faulty product using an ESD protection bag of good quality with proper cushioning material in a strong box of adequate size. Please include the Problem Report in the same box. 6.
