1 CHAPE - 2 SIZE, GOWH AE AND AL-BAN DISIBION OF POPLAION IN HE SAE/ GOWH AE: he growth rate of population for any decade for Census purposes may be defined as the percentage of the difference in population between the two Censuses divided by the population of the previous Census. he percentage decadal growth rate observed for the period for India & Puducherry. based on the provisional population figures of 211 Census are given below in statement 2.1 SAEMEN Decadal Growth rate and its variation India & State/ Sl. Decadal Growth ate Census Year No India Puducherry NA NA * * Census was conducted during 1948 in Puducherry From the statement, it is observed that the decadal growth of India is fluctuating upto 1981Census and from 1981 Census onwards shows decreasing trend while in Puducherry. the decadal growth rate is gradually increasing till 1991Census. he growth rate has come down during 21 Census and is increased to 7.1 percent in 211 Census. On comparison, it can be noticed that India's growth rate is 1.6 percent less than 's growth rate during 211 Census. 13

It may be noticed from the data against Puducherry. and districts, that the growth rate in urban area for both sex is higher than rural area. Among the four districts, the lowest growth rate is registered in rural area of Karaikal i.e.,6. percent whereas in urban 31.9 percent. Yanam and Mahe districts are entirely urban and it may be seen that the female dominates male population in both the districts. In Yanam, female registers percent while male registers percent. In Mahe district, female registers 15.2 whereas male population registers percent respectively. 14

3 Among rural-urban areas in Puducherry and Karaikal districts, the growth rate in sex breakup is higher in rural areas of and in rban areas of Karaikal District. It may be seen from the above statement that in Puducherry among ural and rban population to sex breakup, population in urban areas is doubled when compared to rural areas. he same is noticed in Puducherry district whereas in Karaikal ural population is higher than rban population. In Karaikal district among ural-rban areas, almost equal percentage is noticed ie., the marginal percentage of Persons, Male and Female with ural-rban are 1.98%, 1.18% and.8% respectively. 15

In Mahe district which is also entirely urban, male and female shows an increase in 211 Census than 21 Census, but female population is higher than the male population in both the decades. In Puducherry district the male/female population shows gradual increase in both rural and urban areas and the same trend is noticed in Karaikal district also. 5 he above statement shows the order of ranking of districts according to their growth rate of population. According to the statement, Yanam district has registered highest growth rate of population i.e followed by Puducherry and Karaikal district.
