UNIVERSITY OF ROME TOR VERGATA FACULTY OF ENGINEERING business engineering MASTER PROGRAM IN THE CAMPUS Tor Vergata, founded in 1980, is one of the three public Universities in Rome. The School of Business Engineering (one of the first business schools in Italy to operate within the framework of engineering studies) was established in 1991, and since then has earned its reputation for quality. Admission is limited and highly selective. Tor Vergata has, altogether, 40,000 students; the Engineering Faculty 6,500; the School of Business Engineering, in the various programs, about 600 undergraduates, 400 graduates, 120 post graduate students. MASTER LEVEL II Two master programme levels are currently offered by the public university system in Italy. The lower level (Level I) requires a university degree with at least a three-year course of study (as, for example, a bachelor or a laurea ) for admission. The second level (Level II) requires a five-year degree, such as a laurea magistrale, or a bachelor plus a Level I Master degree. Level II Master programs usually offer a more advanced learning experience, are more challenging and admission is much more restricted and competitive.

MASTER PROGRAM IN business engineering FOREWORD At the very heart of all the extraordinary developments that have characterized this exceptional period of change between two millennia from a social, economic and technological perspective, above all there has been human capital. People make the difference in the performance of enterprises, public administration, and services.the availability of brilliantly qualified and strongly motivated managers constitutes an important condition for competitive success. It is therefore with pride that I present the 9th edition of the Master Program in Business Engineering, an high level education programme dedicated to meet the business needs to develop modern managerial capacity and to offer to all the participants the opportunity of an exceptional professional growth. Students will acquire advanced competences in the organizational and management fields and will be able to plan, implement and manage changes in structures and strategies, working in a team and, when appropriate, taking on leadership roles. The Program has come into existence through the experience of the Business School of the Faculty of Engineering at the Tor Vergata University and enjoys the contributions and experience of more than thirty teaching staff, who have also already been involved in our Ph. D. program, and of a grouping of enterprises and organizations, each one leader in its fieald and highly representative of various organizational contexts and business models. All topics are introduced with state-of-the-art theory and with references to particularly interesting and paradigmatic business cases, thus contributing to the development of motivation and enthusiasm for best practices in enterprises and organisations. Enthusiasm, combined with a solid preparation, is a fundamental requirement when facing organizational and management problems in an enteprise environment that is often characterized by turbulence phenomena that, in both the public and private sector, make generalized solutions impossible to consider. The campus of the University of Rome Tor Vergata adds a strong academic atmosphere, with its stimulating environment, rich in national and international connections. Participation calls for commitment and sacrifice; in return the programme guarantees a creative and professionally interesting experience, up to all expectations Agostino La Bella Professor of Managerial Economics Dean of Engineering and Head of the Business School 2 3

OBJECTIVES Many problems in the modern society are in the field of organization and control, solvable with the combined use of modern techniques of Management and using advanced technologies. Both the public and the private sectors operate within environments rapidly evolving along rather complex and strongly dynamic lines, generating a growing demand for managers able to keep the pace with the speed of changes in terms of competencies, organizational setup, competitive environment, and strategic resources, and thus supplying effective answers and solutions. The modern manager is required not only to have managerial ability, but also creativity, leadership and the capacity to consider the entire economic and organizational event horizon. The introduction of new technologies, made necessary to meet the competition or to supply new, continually improved, products and services that meet the expectations of clients/users, brings along a wide range of managerial problems. All the traditional managerial tools usually not only ignore the technological side of business but also supply a static representation, which can hardly take account of the phenomena that innovation arises Thus it is necessary to adopt adequate training approaches, able to offer managerial tools compatible with the growing diffusion of advanced technologies, and in particular the information and communication ones Since the 1998/99 Academic Year, the Master Program in Business Engineering has effectively answered to these needs, offering a high-level training opportunity, carefully planned and particularly innovative in methodologies and contents. The tenth edition (A.Y. 2008/2009) has not only been updated in its programs, but is also filled out with new services that make the training experience more productive, interesting and pleasant. WHO IT IS FOR The Program aims to prepare managers able to supply solutions to problems that arise in highly dynamic technologi- 4 cal and market contexts and in which creativity and leadership qualities must be coupled with the capacity to face complex problems of a strategic, managerial or organisational nature. The course is, therefore, directed to graduates in technicalscientific or economic-social disciplines, business people, professionals, managers, and middle managers from companies and public and private organizations who wish to update their preparation in the field of business organization and management. THE SCHOOL The Master Program in Business Engineering is held within the Business School of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. It is a school with a short but intense history. Created in 1990 with the beginning of the Laurea Course in Management Engineering, it developed in 1993 with the institution of the PhD Program, one of the three then existing in that sector in Italy, and in 1998 received a new impulse with the opening of the Master Program.Very active also in research, enjoying plentiful international connections, it has received much scientific recognition in Italy and abroad. The School brings to the Master Program more than thirty people between professors and tutors, and a staff that ensures the smooth operation of the whole didactic organization. The School is not just University: there is the fundamental role of the Group of Excellence that supports the initiative, consisting of several companies and organizations, of varying size, but all important for their role in production, innovation and society. Also crucial is the role of Alumni who have, wholly or partly, received from the School their managerial education and who constitute a vital resource, as well as being the image of the School itself.their relations and support also round out the Master Program. For this reason great care is taken in keeping alive the professional and friendship ties with ex-alumni through the Master s Graduate Association (Associazione Master d Impresa, A.M.I). 5

The ambition of the School is not only to increase the students competencies, but also to contribute to their problem-solving capacities development. This involves exercising creativity, creating value, guiding a group of people (a workgroup, staff, employees, etc.) and obtaining results without the use of hierarchy (less and less defined in terms of authority relationships). Above all, what characterizes the School is the strong commitment in passing on to students the enthusiasm and pride of working at the cutting edge of professional knowledge and practice. TEACHERS AND TUTORS The main strength of the Master Program in Business Engineering is the teaching staff, that helds years of teaching experience in several first class universities as well as varied experiences in business consultancy and collaborations. The authoritative didactic direction guarantees transversal coordination and integration between the various courses parts and contents. Students will also be supported and assisted in the definition of their personalized course of studies by tutors, who also supply support for any problem eventually arising along the training path. THE PROGRAMME The programme evolves around six appropriately interconnected competence areas, and has the aim of integrating theoretical knowledge with direct applications in the business world. THE FUNDAMENTALS This area aims at integrating the participants base competences, who may be heterogeneous as to training and work experience, through courses that supply fundamental elements of economy and business organization, law, and informatics, as well as mathematical tools. GENERAL MANAGEMENT In the competitive environment, characterized by high instability and speed of change, it has become fundamental to possess heterogeneous competences to master the business in all its forms: to that end, this area revolves around many themes from management control to logistics, passing through informatics systems and operations management. THE BUSINESS AND ITS ENVIRONMENT The success of an enteprise and its capacity to win are also tied to its capacity to react to threats and grasp opportunities. This area, therefore, supplies the tools and competences necessary to understand the dynamics that characterize competitive environments, thus integrating the internal and external visions of a company. THE NEW TOOLS The profound changes that have taken place in the markets in the last few years have created a highly unstable playing field which is in continuous evolution for businesses, that, today more than ever, must base their own competitive advantage upon resources that are difficult to imitate and are highly idiosyncratic. The success factors are quickly shifting from technologies that now start to be considered as enabling commodity to people and their capabilities. For that reason, this area aims to supply new tools for business management and governance, based on creativity, leadership, negotiation and conflict resolution techniques. PROJECT WORK Upon request participants can be placed in company programmes to use the competencies acquired during the course to identificate and solve specific emerging problems. Project work will be carried out at the end of the course under the supervision of a university tutor and will have an estimated duration of about three months. The Project work activity includes writing a final report that will be evaluated by the Program Faculty. 6 7

COMPANY INTERNSHIPS With a view to complete the training, participants have the opportunity to access an internship that enables them to enjoy a direct practical experience either at one of the participants in the Group of Excellence or at the organizations that make a request during the year to our Placement Service. The involvement of the intern will include setting-up and realizing a project of interest for the host organization, under the supervision of university and business tutors. Participation in the internship activity will be subject to curriculum evaluation and passing an individual interview at the concerned organization.the Master Program in Business Engineering offers the unique opportunity of creating a longlasting link with the Tor Vergata University and, in particular, with its Faculty of Engineering. Altogether, the programme follows the Management Engineering approach, based on innovative methods and creative problem solving to the fields of business organization and management. DIDACTIC MODALITIES The lecturers are the best that the each area can offer, each with his own specialization, but all with a common mental outlook. Participants in the Program, considered partners rather than students according to the tradition of the post-graduate courses at the Tor Vergata athenaeum, can enjoy plunging into a modern university environment, created according with well established international-level models, and sharing with it the numerous scientific and professional national and international relationships. The most advanced experiences and practices will be presented and discussed in class, also offering the opportunity to participate in work groups in order to search and implement new solutions to specific organizational and management problems of businesses, public organizations and research centres. Participants will have access to all the school structures, and also to the seminars offered by internal professors and by national and international guests.the study environment enables the participants to make the best possible use of all the experiences and competencies previously acquired. Learning one from another is just as important as learning from the professors, who encourage this type of interchange with lessons and exercises conducted in a dynamic, creative and interactive way. Students are also invited to create and make new proposals in all the courses.thus attendance at the Master s Degree becomes, for all the motivated students, a creative and stimulating experience. The Master Program in Business Engineering offers, with the traditional high quality didactic level, numerous services derived from the Program experience and from the suggestions of the participants in previous editions: didactic material (except for some texts and case studies to be acquired separately) are available from the first day; a discussion board and on line support is given for all; extracurricular activities for specific in-depth work, not compulsory but of definite interest. Such services are entirely included in the subscription fee. There will also be social events to facilitate integration among the participants and informal contact with the lecturers. Courses will be held in two different modalities: Blended and Web. In both modalities the students are required to follow up each lesson by further personal in-depth study: this will create a continuous succession of lessons and tests along the way, giving the students indispensable check-points for evaluating their own depth of study. Candidates must indicate clearly in their application the modality of choice. E - L E A R N I N G MODE Start October 2008 The programme will run on-line on a particularly innovative software platform, which enables the supply of courses with interactive modalities that reproduce the academic atmosphere. Participants in the web mode will have 24/7 access to lessons and exercises, but must also maintain the same rhythm of learning and testing as their classroom counterparts. On-li- 8 9

ne students may wish to attend in person lessons held by guest speakers, as well as the demonstrations, tests and meetings within each module that are held on Saturday mornings (attendance, however, is not compulsory). Interactive sessions with teachers, virtual classes and replies to questions sent via complete the services offered. The web mode is particularly indicated for those having heavy professional commitments that hinder a presence in class, but who do not anyway wish to pass up a stimulating opportunity of very high-level training. Participation in the web mode is also open to whoever has to be abroad for long periods. Attendance at the web lessons is also compulsory and will be recorded through a measurement of web interactivity: attendance of less than 75% of the set course hours will cause exclusion from the course itself and the consequent lack of certification of the relative credits (CFU). the course itself and the consequent lack of certification of the relative credits (CFU). EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES During the Program various extra-curricular activities will be organised with the dual aim of offering further meeting opportunities to favour the integration of the participants and to show practical application of some of the concepts acquired during the courses. Particularly relevant from this point of view is the leader-ship day, organized in collaboration with the Lega Navale Italiana (The Italian Marine Federation, a public body aimed at promoting marine activities) that offers an experience of team building on a sailing boat, the corporate-fighting day with the participation of a kick-boxing world champion, that BLENDED MODE Start October 2008 The courses will be held in the classrooms of the Faculty of Engineering and will consist of 10 weekly afternoon hours of lessons held by web sessions on Wednesdays and in class on Fridays. The Blended Classroom mode offers the advantage of direct contact both with the lecturers and with the other students; this direct contact usually enables the creation of informal links, collaboration and relationship, exchanges and friendship between students favoured by the informal but very lively atmosphere of the university Campus. Attendance at the lessons is compulsory and will be recorded: attendance of less than 75% of the set course hours will cause exclusion from involves experience of the management of relationships and conflicts under stress. Also planned is an acting course to improve the participants communication skills. Participation in this activities is optional and included in the program fee. BUSINESS CONTACTS The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and the Master Program in Business Engineering have, over the time, forged numerous links with businesses, organizations, and consultancy firms at both national and international level. In particular, the Program is supported by the member companies and organizations of the Group of Excellence, which finance scholarships and make possible internship activities

PLACEMENT The Master Program in Business Engineering operates a Placement service to facilitate the entry of Master graduates into the working world. POST-DEGREE SITUATION OF STUDENTS NOT IN EMPLOYMENT AT THE START( ) 34,5% 6,9% Thanks to this activity, over time a network of collaboration with numerous companies has been consolidated, offering internships and work possibilities to those who: fit the profiles requested by the companies themselves; have most distinguished themselves over the entire course. During previous editions, placement offered by the Master s Degree has enabled the students large majority to find their first employment or to improve their position within their business or organization. TESTIMONIALS 14 58,6% Employment through placement by the Program Employment during the Program Seeking employment at the end of the Program I decided to attend the Master in Business Engineering in order to acquire and develop the organizational and management skills that are taking on an ever more important role in the turbulent scenarios that modern businesses find themselves operating in. My training as an electronic engineer lacked certain economic-managerial aspects that I learned to know and value for their notable importance only during my first working years. Attending this Program has been for me a useful learning experience, thanks to all of the lecturers being very well prepared, interesting to listen to,and pleasant. I can also say that my circle of friendships has grown! Further, guest speakers coming from high-level companies contributed to enriching the experience, placing concrete company examples alongside the theoretical lessons. Marco S., Ancona (6th ed. - Acc.Year 2004/2005) The Master in Business Engineering not only allowed me to win a scholarship but also to have an important experience of internship in Alitalia in the same sector I still work today with great satisfaction. The Program helped me to reach a valid integration of Knowledge, Leadership, Enrichment, and business Networking, Knowledge, as the comprehensive and innovative training gave me the possibility to choose and follow modules of personal and professional interest, thanks to the guidance of valid tutors. Leadership, as in each course, in differing ways, I found the stimulation to exercise, improve and make use of my distinctive fundamental characteristics, to operate in a competitive and volatile scenario such as the present. Enrichment, as I greatly increased my competences, which had been focused on economical and finance, and which were broadened and enriched with the paradigms from the world of Engineering. Business networking, having put me into contact with people, companies and institutions, breathing life into a very interesting network of relationships, both personal and professional. Pierfrancesco C., Roma (5th ed. - Acc.Year 2003/2004) I felt the need to attend a Master Program in the managerial field after I had personally noticed the fascination and complexity of organizational dynamics, and the need to have managerial tools and methods to tackle them.the Master in Business Engineering answered my needs, with many interesting stimuli, with a friendly environment and with a part-time formula that made it possible to reconcile work and study activity. Paolo S., Roma (4th ed. - Acc.Year 2002/2003) THE QUALIFICATION Obtaining the 2nd level University Master s Degree in Business Engineering is subject to the accomplishment of 60 15

credits (CFU).The introduction of credits answers the need to give persons with little time available the possibility of optimizing their studying and working schedules. Thanks to this evaluation system, students are not obliged to follow all of the courses that are offered but, based on the time available and their own interests, can, (over three years if necessary), attend those courses that, appropriately integrated with internships and/or project work, allow them to obtain the qualification. The credits may be accumulated up to the necessary total, within three years of enrolment. The necessary CFU s for the attainment of the degree can be obtained through: classroom or on-line attendance of taught courses with final evaluation test; participation in an internship organized by the Program (10 CFU); completion of a Project under the tutoring of a teacher (10 CFU). Each participant must present a personal study plan, agreed with the assigned tutor, at the start of each academic year, specifying the intended training itinerary. Inserting training activities exceeding 60 CFU in the study plan is not permitted. Those who have successfully completed training activities for a sufficient number of credits will receive from the University of Rome Tor Vergata the qualification of University Master s Degree in Business Engineering (Level II). The qualification helds a legal value in Italy and in the EU. EVENTS Graduates will receive the diplomas of the Master s Degree in Business Engineering during the Ceremony that will take place in January 2008 at Villa Mondragone, the official University HQ. The event, traditionally organized as a study session on a current theme in the managerial field, will end with a cocktail party to which all the Students are invited.the event will include the yearly Master Executive Award ceremony. The awards are conferred upon people who have particularly distinguished themselves in the field of business organization and management.the attribution of the prize will be decided by a Commission consisting of authoritative representatives of the academic and business world.also, during the year, a series of seminars and workshops of interest to the participants will be promoted, along with social events to facilitate integration and interchange between students and teachers.
