1 European Master of Arts (M.A.) in EUROCULTURE Academic year 2008/2009 General information The European Master of Arts (M.A.) in Euroculture, activated at the University of Udine for the academic year 2008/09, is a three-semester programme (first level Master, according Italian law) worth 90 European credits (ECTS), corresponding to 90 Italian CFU. It is offered by a network of eight European Universities: Deusto (Bilbao - San Sebastián, Spain), Groningen (Netherlands), Göttingen (Germany), Krakow (Poland), Olomouc (Czech Republic), Marc Bloch (Strasbourg, France), Udine (Italy) and Uppsala (Sweden). Students who enroll at the University of Udine will spend the first and the third semester in Udine, while moving for the second semester to one of the partner Universities of their choice. Purposes The programme is developed from a core theme common to all partner Universities, entitled Europe in the Wider World. It is an interdisciplinary, multilingual course which provides graduates with advanced education for professions and activities where knowledge of European culture and European Union institutions is particularly important: therefore graduates are competitive in an employment market increasingly international in character. More in detail, the course provides students with the means necessary to analyze social phenomena on a European scale, to comprehend how European institutions and organizations work and to reflect on features of cultural history. It also takes into account the process of European identity and integration. Structure The Master course is built on four founding elements common to all partner Universities. 1) Core Fields of European Culture Its main objective is the acquisition of knowledge and analytical tools relating to European culture in terms of different but interconnected paradigms (mobility, transfer, intervention, cooperation). Through theoretical concepts, methodological approaches and knowledge, students are oriented to a profound reflection on European cultures. 2) Eurocompetence Teaching activity will be based on an interdisciplinary approach, oriented towards problemsolving and structured around projects; the internship will offer the opportunity to integrate academic knowledge with professional training. 3) Intensive Programme Students attending all the Universities of the network will meet for an intensive course of the duration of 10 days, scheduled for the end of the second semester. It constitutes an important opportunity for group intercultural experience and further exploration of the themes dealt with during the first and second semesters. It consists of classes, lectures, a Career Day, study trips, and seminars for the presentation and discussion of the research papers prepared by the students. 1

2 4) Research Seminar activity built around the theme Europe in the Wider World will focus attention on specific thematic areas, stimulating students understanding of the origin and evolution of cultural identities and processes of transformation as well as the impact of world political and social developments on European cultures and viceversa. The final thesis will be prepared under the guidance of two tutors a staff member of the University of Udine and one from the University where the student spends the second semester on a subject related to the themes of the Master programme. Teaching programme The four elements are translated into three semesters. First semester (6 th October th January 2009) Acquisition of competences 30 ECTS /CFU Core Fields of European Culture - 25 ECTS/CFU Eurocompetence I - 5 ECTS/CFU Students may choose among the following courses, which are part of the Laurea specialistica in Studi Europei of the University of Udine, and must obtain at least 30 ECTS/CFU. 3 Students will attend courses at one of the partner Universities of their choice, with the financial support of the University of Udine (the second semester can be attended at the University of Udine only in exceptional cases to be considered by the Master Staff Council). The University of Udine will host students coming from partner Universities. Italian language courses are offered free of charge for them. Detailed informations about second semester courses will be given during the first semester by the coordinators of partner Universities. At the end of the semester all students will take part in the Intensive Programme to be held at the University of Olomouc (21st June 2nd July 2009). Third semester (October 2009 January 2010) Application of competences 30 ECTS/CFU Internship or research seminars 15 ECTS/CFU MA thesis (second part) 15 ECTS/CFU. Students will complete their learning experience with an Internship or Research seminars and the writing of their MA thesis. Attendance is obligatory for all activities programmed over the three semesters, with a minimum requirement of 70% (100% for the internship). Students who are simultaneously enrolled in the Euroculture Master and in the Laurea specialistica in Studi Europei of the University of Udine may use some credits obtained in the Laurea Specialistica to fulfill specific requirements of the Master. Further information will be made available during the course. Admission requirements Enrolment in the Master programme requires one of the following degrees: Italian BA degree (laurea di primo livello) Italian MA degree (laurea magistrale) a foreign degree of equivalent standing. During the test for admission, applicants should also demonstrate a proficient knowledge of English as well as a high level of motivation towards the programme. The test will take place on 30 th September 2008 at 4 p.m. in the meeting room of the Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche, Via Treppo 18, Udine. It will be conducted by a special Committee drawn from members of the Master Staff Council. Should the number of candidates declared suitable exceed the places available, an order of admittance will be drawn up on the basis of the marks they obtain in the admission test. Preference between candidates with equal marks will be given to the younger one. If free places remain after the date of the test, the Master Staff Council may consider the late admission of other candidates provided that they apply before the course starts. There is a maximum of 15 students admitted to the course. The programme will start only if a minimum of 5 students enrolled is reached. Enrolment in the Master course and deadlines 3

4 Applications for admission to the Master programme are to be made using a specific form, exempt from stamp duty, and filling in every section. They must include a declaration, in conformity with the rules on administrative documentation (T.U. n. 445, ), concerning the possession of the degree mentioned above and the marks obtained in the degree course. Applications must be presented by 29 th September 2008 to: Ripartizione Didattica, Sezione servizi agli studenti e ai laureati, via Mantica 3, Udine. They must be accompanied by: a) a certificate (or a declaration according T.U. n. 445, ) proving possession of the degree required, including a list of the single courses done and the exam marks obtained; b) a curriculum vitae; c) a formal declaration concerning the possession of professional, cultural and scientific qualifications. If the application is sent by post or via a third party, candidates must include the complete photocopy of a valid identity document. The date of applications sent by post will be determined by the Ufficio Protocollo of the University. The order of admittance to the course will be published on 1 st October 2008 on the University official noticeboard in via Mantica 3. Its publication on the noticeboard is considered as the official communication to interested parties; no communication to their addresses is contemplated. Once the admission to the course has been decreed, a formal request for enrolment (on paper subject to stamp duty of 14,62) must be presented no later than 6 th October 2008, together with the receipt for payment of the first fraction of the enrolment fee of 1.500,00, which must be made by bank transfer on the account pertaining to Università degli Studi di Udine with UNICREDIT BANCA S.p.A. Students must also supply two photographs suitable for identity documents, one of them accompanied by a declaration of authenticity, exempt from stamp duty. The second fraction of the enrolment fee, consisting of 750,00, must be paid in the same procedure as the first no later than 30 th September For students enrolled in the Master course who intend to enroll also in the Laurea specialistica in Studi Europei in the academic year 2008/09, the enrolment fee in the Master course will be 600,00 which must be paid fully at the moment of enrolment. Any such students who do not complete their enrolment in the Laurea specialistica by 31 st December 2008 must pay the difference from the first fraction of the fee due for normal enrolment in the Master course no later than 14 th January If the students do not pay the required sum within the specified deadlines, they lose their status of enrolment. Furthermore, in order to receive the Master degree, any such students who fail to complete the Laurea specialistica must pay the difference between the total of the sums paid and the total due for the full fee charged for enrolment in the Master course. Students admitted to the Master course have no right to the reimbursement of the enrolment fee, unless the University fails to activate the course. Degrees granted 4

5 Students who successfully complete the Master course will receive a double degree issued by each of the Universities where they have conducted their studies. The University of Udine will issue the following certifications: a) The Master of Arts degree (first level) in Euroculture will be granted to students who attend and complete the Master course at the University of Udine and certify that they have satisfied all the requirements of the entire programme. b) A certificate of postgraduate education (first level) will be granted to students who have attended and completed at least one semester at the University of Udine. During the Master course students enrolled may request and receive certification of their enrolment from the Head of the University s Administrative Office.
