1 Jamie s Home Cooking Skills Competition Guide This guide outlines everything teachers and students need to know to make sure they are in with the chance of winning! Food Revolution Day The theme for this year's competition is centred around Food Revolution Day on the 16th May Food Revolution Day is a chance for people who love food to come together to share information, talents and resources; to pass on their knowledge and highlight the world s food issues. All around the globe, people will work together to make a difference. Food Revolution Day 2014 is all about getting children and young people excited about food. We want to inspire change in people s food habits and celebrate the importance of cooking good food, raising awareness of how it affects our health and happiness. We believe that it all starts with getting kids and young people around the world food smart. Food Revolution Day is open to anyone in the world who wants to take the steps towards getting educated about food Competition Brief What do students need to do to enter? Students need to design, plan and cook a meal for a specific scenario from the three options given (below). The meal should include at least two dishes or courses, and include details of a drink to accompany the food. Students should think about the specific requirements of the scenario and show explicitly in the meal design how they have catered for these requirements. For example, they could show how they ve catered for the specific dietary requirements of the type of people that would be attending, how they ve sourced locally grown food, or how they ve taken risks or issues with the venue into account when planning the menu. This year we d like to see learners across the UK really embrace the ethos of Food Revolution Day and base their entries on healthy nutritional ingredients with inspiration for their dishes from around the world. Scenarios 1) You are catering for a dinner party for friends and/or family to celebrate Food Revolution Day, by preparing traditional dishes from a cuisine of your choice. 2) You are running a food stall at a school fete on Food Revolution Day. 3) You have taken over the running of the school canteen on Food Revolution Day and will be serving lunch to the whole school.
2 Deadline for Entries Friday 16 th May 2014 All entries must be submitted and received by Pearson by the 16 th May Judging will take place in May and the winner will be announced in June Entrants Who can enter? The competition is open to all learners aged years studying at a school or college in the UK. Students can work individually or in groups of up to 4 people. The competition will have two winners and two runners up; one winner and runner up for the individual category submissions and a winner and runner up for the group category submissions. Home Cooking Skills qualification Learners don t need to be registered onto the Level 1 or 2 Pearson BTEC Award in Home Cooking Skills to take part in the competition but they will need consent from their parent/carer to enter if under 18. If your entrant is currently taking the Level 1 or Level 2 qualification, the competition entry can be mapped to contribute to their qualification. Even if they don t win, they ve added something to their portfolio! Each entry should include: Cover Sheet - Fill out the entire form with permission from parent/carer should the student be less than 18 years. Menu - A comprehensive menu detailing the key components. This should include at least two dishes or courses and a drink to accompany the meal. Ingredient information - Specifics on where the ingredients were sourced from and why they choose those ingredients. Presentation - Details about how the meal will be presented including how the table will be set and any accompanying decorations or entertainment needed. Special requirements - An explanation of what the special requirements of the scenario are and how they ve been catered for. Evidence - Photographs or a short film of the completed meal. Teacher Review - A review from a teacher confirming the meal was cooked successfully and a review of how it tasted!
3 How will the winner be chosen? Judging criteria The entries will be judged on the following criteria: Creativity Consideration of the specific requirements for the given scenario Complexity of the menu Nutritional balance including seasonal fruit and vegetables Presentation of the meal (as provided in photographic or video evidence) Taste test!
