3 Page 3 of 10 Background Internationally: The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh developed and launched the Lister Surgical Skills Competition in May 2011 for senior medical students in third, fourth and fifth year throughout the United Kingdom. The competition involved regional heats organised by the RCSEd Outreach Team and RCSEd Regional Surgical Advisers resulting in the selection of 20 finalists. In total, over 900 medical students registered their interest in participating in the event, with over 300 selected to take part in the regional heats, in the hope of being shortlisted as one of the top 20 to take part in the Grand Final of the Competition. The competition was generously supported by Johnson & Johnson Medical Companies as well as other financial sponsors and received major media coverage during the selection of competitors and the grand final event. Lister Surgical Skills Competition Participants 2012 ( 2012) More details about the Lister Surgical Skills Competition can be found at: Loco-regionally: In 2012, the inaugural Golden Scalpel Games were held at the St. Vincent s Clinic (Darlinghurst). The competition was aimed at showcasing the surgical skills of aspiring surgeons from the 6 Surgical Skills Training Networks in NSW. The Golden Scalpel Games were the brainchild of Dr. Emily Granger, Director of the Eastern and Greater Southern Surgical Skills Network, as an entertaining way to encourage junior doctors to practice their surgical skills. This concept was adopted by the Surgical Skills Training Council of NSW and developed into a formal

4 Page 4 of 10 competition consisting of 6 teams from the respective Surgical Networks. Each team was made up of 5 surgical skills trainees, ranging from interns to senior resident medical officers. The competition involved five 20-minute training stations, testing both basic and advanced surgical techniques as well as general surgical knowledge and teamwork. The inaugural competition was won by the Northern Surgical Skills Network (by a margin of 0.22 points!). The competition had significant media coverage in local Surgical and General Medical media publications and was adopted by the training networks as an annual competition held at a different Surgical Training Network each year. The Winning Northern Team, Inaugural Golden Scalpel Games 2012 (HETI: Leading Edge, 2012). In 2013, the University of New South Wales Surgical Society will host the inaugural Students' Surgical Skills Competition (SSSC) with the intent that in each subsequent year, a different NSW medical school will act as the hosts. Competition Information The primary aims of the Students Surgical Skills Competition are: 1. To promote training in surgical skills and surgical education 2. To engender intercampus networking and friendly rivalry 3. To educate surgically oriented students on surgical entry pathways and guide future skill development. The inaugural SSSC invites all 8 NSW/ACT medical schools to provide a team of senior medical students to compete through a series of objective surgical challenge stations. The teams will be scored by independent surgical registrars/consultants, blinded to the background of each team, on a predetermined objective marking criteria.

5 Page 5 of 10 Team Selection Criteria 1. Each team to consist of FIVE medical students a. Students must be final/penultimate year medical students and members of their respective medical and/or surgical societies. b. Each team is to assign TWO (2) back up team members who may participate in the competition should a primary team member become unavailable for the competition. 2. The selection of each team member is to be objectively determined by the respective medical/surgical society. a. The selection process must be transparent, impartial and fair to allow all eligible students to apply for the team. 3. The final team line up is to be finalised and submitted to the Surgical Skills Competition organisation committee 1 month prior to Competition Day. Registration 1. A Complete Team (5 students + 2 backup students) from each participating University must be registered with the SSSC Committee prior to a predetermined closing date. 2. Registration fee: $100 per team ($20 per team member) a. Registration fee is necessitated to ensure attendance at competition and to comply with sponsorship commitments. Date and Venue 1. 7 Page 7 of 10 What to expect during the day At Registration Teams will register on arrival at the venue. Gowns, surgical caps and eye shields will be distributed as appropriate. OH&S and safety precautions will be discussed. Morning refreshments will be provided and the teams will be able to catch up with their peers prior to official start of SSSC. During the Competition Teams will rotate through 6 stations every 30 mins. Each station will be timed to 20 mins, 5 mins for introduction to the station, station rules, and requirements, 5 mins at the end for assessment marking and rotation time. Each judge will be based at one station and will mark all the teams rotating through that station during the competition. A station will be allocated to provide a break between stations. Minor refreshments will be provided. At the end of each station Scores will be determined and kept by the score keepers who will enter scores into a large projected interactive scoreboard to enable each team to keep track of their progress through the competition. Each team will therefore know at all times, the cumulative score throughout the competition to facilitate improvement in approaches to each station etc. Trophy presentations The trophy and prize presentations will occur immediately after the conclusion of the stations.

8 Page 8 of 10 Proposed Skills Stations Station Description Station 1: Emergency Trauma Scenario By using the ABCD management of basic trauma and EMST principles, participants are able to showcase their ability to manage trauma. Here, the emphasis is on using a systematic approach to management and on basic resuscitation skills. These include: 1. Initial Assessment and Management 2. Airway and Ventilation 3. Shock Assessment and Management 4. Spinal Cord Assessment and Management 5. Stabilisation and Transport Station 2: Suturing & Knot Tying Each member of the team must demonstrate their ability to do five suturing tasks: 1. Simple interrupted sutures 2. Horizontal mattress sutures 3. Subcuticular Sutures 4. Excision of a subcutaneous lesion 5. Square Knot Station 3: Surgical Anatomy and Radiology Teams work together to identify a range of structures on anatomic models or radiographic images and answer a series of questions relating to surgical management of relevant pathology as identified

9 Page 9 of 10 Station 4: Surgical Instrument and Product Identification Students are required to identify a variety of commonly used surgical instruments and products and answer basic questions regarding their correct use Station 5: Laparoscopic Simulation Challenge Each of the 5 teams will attempt to complete a series of challenges on a laparoscopic simulator Station 6: Bowel Anastomosis / Chest Drain Workshop Each student will be required to perform an end-to-end small bowel anastomosis using appropriate materials and technique. Marking Criteria Objective marking criteria for each station will be confirmed 1 month prior to the event. Competition Venue With the new upgrades complete, Liverpool Hospital has become the largest hospital in New South Wales as well as boasting a brand new clinical skills and simulation centre as part of the Ingham Institute. The centre was officially opened in January 2013 by the Minister for Health, Hon Tanya Plibersek MP, and is focussed on providing students, trainees and professionals with a safe environment for simulated learning and continuing professional education.

10 Page 10 of 10 The resources available for use at the Ingham Institute include 1. Two fully simulated Operating Theatres and associated scrub and anaesthetics bays with adjoining control room 2. Two clinical skills rooms with incorporated video capability and video conferencing 3. Eight outpatient consultation rooms set up for patient assessment 4. Four seminar and tutorial rooms with live streaming and debriefing capability 5. Mannequins including the state of the art SimMan3G, MegaCode Kelly Simpad and a variety of anatomic models Liverpool Hospital can be conveniently accessed by Rail or Bus public transport with ample surrounding street parking on weekends.
