1 Natural Medicines in the Clinical Management of Anxiety Course # Needs North Americans are now using significant amounts of complementary and alternative medicines, and health care providers are saying they need more knowledge in this area. Most U.S. and Canadian medical and pharmacy schools are addressing this need in the curriculum. Many practicing health care professionals need additional education on complementary and alternative medicines. In order to effectively manage patients with anxiety, it s important for health care professionals to know the natural medicines patients may be using or asking about for this condition. Target Learners This activity is intended for health care practitioners who are caring for patients who use natural medicines along with conventional medicines. There are no prerequisites. Goals and Objectives The goal of this activity is to help clinicians in all settings develop a better knowledge base from which they can provide consultation regarding natural medicines used for anxiety. Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to: 1. List triggers that can exacerbate anxiety. 2. Identify a natural medicine that might help patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder. 3. Identify two natural medicines with some evidence of efficacy for treating anxiety. 4. Discuss the safety precautions associated with products used for anxiety.
