Role Model Scheme
Introduction We want to employ a diverse workforce that reflects the population we serve: we know that in employing and valuing a diverse workforce we are able to recruit from a wider pool of talent, improve morale, and provide services that are sensitive, responsive appropriate and easy to access. With this in mind we have developed a Role Models Scheme to showcase the diversity in our workforce. We have collected stories from a range of staff with protected characteristics (protected characteristics, under the Equality Act 2010, being; age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, race, religion or belief, gender and sexual orientation, and carer status). We hope that the positive messages from our staff about the jobs that they do, how they got where they are today, and where they are going next will inspire others to apply for jobs in the Trust and motivate our existing staff to develop further in their careers with us. The Role Model stories give us a flavour of the kind of jobs staff are employed in, and development opportunities they have taken to move into higher positions, move across job roles, or improve the quality of service within their job. We also want to inform the community about the range of roles and career options in the NHS beyond doctors and nurses. There are over 70 different job roles within the NHS - all of which can act as a stepping-stone to other professions or types of work.
Joselito Marinas Clinical Skills Training Manager What is your job? Clinical skills training bridges the gap between theory and practice. Clinical skills are the practical skills used to deliver healthcare e.g. taking bloods, inserting catheter and cannulas in a safe, monitored learning environment. What does your role involve? My main responsibilities are to manage the services and operation of the Clinical Skills Laboratory, to develop a skills training programme to meet the learning needs of the multidisciplinary team and medical students and to deliver and organise the delivery of clinical skills training. How long have you worked here? How I got to where I am 22 years Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Centro Escolar University in Manila Community nursing and staff nurse in the Philippines Master of Arts in Nursing (MAN) Staff Nurse progressing to Clinical Instructor at Al- Jahra Hospital, Kuwait. Assistant Director of Nursing Kuwait Seconded as Instructor and Clinical Supervisor to 4th year nursing students from Kuwait University. Joined the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals Trust as a staff nurse progressing to Clinical Support Charge Nurse obtaining UKCC registration.
How I got to where i am (cont..) Whats next for me? Words of inspiration Where to get further information and advice MSc in Practice Development District General Hospital Clinical Co-ordinator and education lead, including secondment as Associate Project Co-ordinator for the Hospital at Night Pilot Scheme. January 2005, back to RLBUHT as the Trust lead for clinical skills training. I have achieved the personal goals I set myself when I came to England. This has been through hard work, dedication, focus and determination with continuous support from friends, colleagues and the organisation. I remain passionate about training and I believe that I still have a lot to offer. I would like to do a PhD or a professional doctorate in the near future. NHS Jobs NHS Careers University courses
Joyce Johnson Modern Matron, General Surgery What is your job? What does your role involve? How long have you worked here? How I got to where I am The Modern Matron s role is to be visible as much as possible to patients, their families, and staff and ensure all nursing strategies, Trust protocols and polices, are being maintained and the highest standards of nursing care are achieved at all times. I try to maximise my time by being out on my wards pro-actively supporting my staff where needed. Completing ward rounds, speaking to the nurse in charge ensuring the well being of the staff and patients, I give attention to the general cleanliness of the wards. I frequently meet with Consultants to update them on nursing strategies and audits Over 40 years NHS Cadet Nurse at Broadgreen Hospital School of Nursing Qualified as a State Enrolled Nurse in State Enrolled Nurse (SEN) on a male orthopaedic ward, I also worked within gynaecology, vascular, a high dependency unit and general surgery. Part time, night duty, SEN at Broadgreen Hospital RGN conversion course at the John Moores University, Liverpool. Staff nurse in General Surgery at the Royal Junior Sister Ward Manager still within general surgery. Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Leadership Course Modern Matron, again within general surgery Modern Matron covering Regional Breast Services, Urology and General Surgery.
Whats next for me? To strive to achieve the highest level of nursing care for all patients placed in my care. I can do this by sharing my own vision of the standards of nursing care, with my staff, as well as the vision of the Trust. I look forward to continuing my career within the Royal Liverpool University Hospital Trust for many years to come. Words of inspiration Where to get further information and advice Completing the RCN Leadership course empowered me to develop my skills and build on my own personal vision of what standards of care I owed to my patients. I try to be a role-model for junior staff who work on my ward, leading by example and reinforcing that the patient is our priority. I have been able to balance the needs of my family and effectively plan my career. I am proud that I have progressed from a cadet nurse in 1971 to my current role as a Modern Matron within the Trust. It is nice to think that I could be seen as a role model for nurses who are only just starting out on their nursing career aspirations. As I m a qualified Nurse I still sometimes work in the Clinics. Almost 30 years How I got to where I am Nurse qualification (1983) Specialist Nurse, St Pauls 1983 diagnosing, treating & discharging patients Acting Matron 2008 Teach A & E Opthalmology at University Teach on work experience programme Whats next for me? I m not really sure at the moment, this post is much more involved than I thought originally, and even though I ve been in post since 2009 I still feel there s a lot to learn.
Words of inspiration Where to get further information and advice Covering a Matron job for maternity gave me a taste for middle management and led me into the Research Centre. I m still registered as a nurse and occasionally work in the clinics in the research centre. Royal College of Nursing Local Universities NHS Careers NHS Jobs

I have always taken an active interest in developing individuals and teams and helping people reach their true potential by seizing opportunities the NHS can offer.looking back it looks as if I have had a very clear plan of where I wanted to be and how to get there. This is not true, I took opportunities that were available and made best use of any support that was about, I have learnt over the years that there is always someone who can help or offer advice it s just knowing who. The hospital has supported me with my studies and career development. Where to get further information and advice Royal College of Nursing Local Universities NHS Careers NHS Jobs
