2 Overview A virtual desktop environment is available for this course and will provide you software applications necessary to complete the course assignments. A virtual desktop allows you to access the applications without having to purchase and install them on your personal computer. The virtual desktop can be accessed one of two ways: View Client: VMWare provides a client that can be downloaded onto your personal computer. Using a client generally provides faster performance and will provide a full set of features that may not be available via a web interface. However, the client protocols (RDP or PCoIP) may be blocked by some firewalls and network configurations. Furthermore you must have rights to install the client on the device you are using for access, for example, you would not be able to install the client on a lab or public computer. Web Interface: HTML5 web access is available from virtually any browser. While the web interface may offer you the ability to access the virtual desktop from any device there are some limitations with the clipboard and local drive redirection for storing your work. The web interface requires no software installation on your personal computer. Getting Started First step is to determine which access method you prefer to use. You may use only one or both. Students need to log in ASAP; the first log in will require the user profile to be created and may take a few minutes. Windows Access via the View Client 1) System Requirements: Windows: o VMware Horizon View Client for Windows requires one of the following operating systems: 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 10 Enterprise edition 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 8 or 8.1, Enterprise or Pro edition 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7 SP1 or no service pack, Home, Enterprise, Ultimate, or Professional edition MacIntosh: o Horizon Client for Mac OS X on all 64-bit Intel-based models that use the Mac OS X 10.8 or later operating system o System Requirements: Model - 64-bit Intel-based Mac 2GB of RAM Operating systems: Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8) Mac OS X Mavericks (10.9 pg. 2
