1 ROSC UPDATE 2013 HOUSTON RECOVERY INITIATIVE

2 WHAT IS A ROSC A Recovery-Oriented System of Care (ROSC) is a coordinated network of community-based services and supports that is person-centered and builds on the strengths and resilience of individuals, families, and communities to achieve improved health, wellness, and quality of life for those with or at risk of alcohol and drug problems.

3 OUR WORKING DEFINITION A Coalition of individual and organizations working to: Get more people into treatment Help more people achieve longterm recovery

4 OUR PRIORITIES Increasing access to housing Building a stronger relationship with the 12-step community and other mutual aid resources Establishing Recovery Community Centers Educating the community on the Chronic Care Model and best practices for treatment Developing and implementing a ROSC model for adolescents with substance use disorders Promoting Recovery Coach Training as a means of increasing recovery resources

8 SOBER HOUSING Ralph is the founder the Houston Coalition of Recovery Oriented Housing. There are currently 20 houses participating in the Coalition. There is a membership drive taking place in a few months to reach out to all group homes preparing to register in compliance with the new City of Houston boarding house ordinance.

10 SOBER HOUSING Oxford House has 15 houses in Houston area and plans to add: 2 more in more in 2014

12 WORKING WITH COMMUNITY RESOURCES Cooperation with the 12-step community (C12C) [August 2011] A forum to initiate and improve dialogue between the professional community and 12-step communities Mutual Aid Recovery Services (MARS) Symposium: Many Paths to Recovery [May 2012] Brought together an array of more than 25 mutual aid (peer-based) recovery resources Houston Area Recovery Resources Expo and Symposium (HARRES) [June 2013] To identify, introduce, and catalog Greater Houston recovery services "First Call" training (ongoing since February 2012) A ROSC strategy to promote early attraction to and engagement in the recovery process.

20 RECOVERY COACHING AUGUST 2013 The Recovery Coach Training is part of the Texas Association of Integrated Recovery Organizations & Services. The goal is to assist recovery community organizations and treatment facility s in bringing recovery support services to scale. ACCOMPLISHMENTS Over 300 people have been trained as recovery coaches in a span of 3 years Scholarships have been awarded to 100 of the people trained as recovery coaches Assisted in the development of a curriculum for the State of Texas that will be cost and service effective There are now 3 locations in Houston that provide recovery support services

22 Developing an Adolescent ROSC Initiative

23 ADOLESCENT ROSC JUNE 2013 The mission of the Adolescent ROSC Committee is to create a broader and deeper safety net for adolescents and their families in need of entering, progressing or further maintaining a positive life system of recovery. INITIAL GOAL/ACTIONS: 1. Offer workshops for the community about what an Alternative Peer Group (APG) is and how one can be started in a community WHICH RESULTED IN: 2. The start-up of an Adolescent Recovery Support Group which is continuing to this day WHICH LED TO 3. A curriculum being developed for the first Adolescent ROSC Teen Leadership Training which took place June 14 th ; the next one is August 9 th Empowerment The teens develop the curriculum, facilitate the training sessions, and write up a manual to be used for future trainings
