2 Visit Our Facebook Page Treatment Provider Directory Parent Tips Prescription painkiller overdose deaths tripled over the last three years nationally. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) 48% of people nationally now take some sort of prescription drug. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) About 90 percent of adults ages 64 and older took prescription medication in the last month, while 25 percent of children did so. Drug Free Marion County to Sponsor Asante Children's Theatre performance Drug Free Marion County is pleased to join with the Asante Children's Theatre to sponsor the Thursday, June 19 opening performance of Caught Up, a drama focusing on the dangers of addiction and how to empower youth through knowledge about community resources available to address substance abuse. The program's theme asks, "When a family gets caught up in addiction, can a teenager save herself?" Rated PG13, the drama will be presented June at The Madame Walker Theatre, 617 Indiana Ave. in downtown Indianapolis. Please join us for DFMC's opening night sponsorship. The program begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are only $5 per person and can be purchased here or at the Theatre box office. For more information on Caught Up, call the Theatre at Grantee Spotlight: Gallahue Behavioral Health Services Each month, Drug Free Marion County will spotlight one of our 2014 Drug Free Communities grantees. In June, we introduce you to the Supported Assisted Living Project available through Gallahue Behavioral Health Services. Housing is a basic functional need for those who are homeless, dealing with substance abuse and in the need of personal recovery. The number of individuals who complete treatment is directly impacted by meeting this need. Through the Supported Assisted Living Project, Gallahue will serve 60 individuals in 2014 by providing accommodations at Beacon House for those addressing treatment for addictive disorders. Residents receive treatment at Gallahue and attend support, community and 12-step meetings both on and off of Beacon House premises. DFMC is proud to support Gallahue Behavioral Health Services on this important Treatment/Recovery program.

Free Strengthening Families Programs Available This Month Two free Strengthening Families Programs are beginning in June and are now accepting enrollees. Each seven-session program is designed to strengthen parenting skills and family communication, build family bonds, lower levels of youth aggression, increase youth academic success, increase resistance to youth peer pressure and help parents and youth learn together. The programs are being offered weekly to families with youth ages 10 to 14, with dinner and child care provided. These Strengthening Families Programs are being offered in partnership with an FSSA grant received by Drug Free Marion County. The June programs will be held on Tuesdays beginning June 24 at: John H. Indiana Take-Back Day a Success The Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on April 26 was another success, with a record 99 Indiana sites participating. Hoosiers safely dropped off 12 tons of prescription drugs that otherwise might have landed in the hands of kids, teens or adults and been used illegally. (It also kept those drugs out of our water supply and environment in general.) Nationwide, participating Take-Back Day sites collected a total of 390 tons of unused/unwanted prescription drugs. Drug Free Marion County will be announcing local options for ongoing prescription drug drop-off opportunities soon! Check back for details!

4 As if you needed another reason to talk to your teens about alcohol and drug use... Teens who drink or use marijuana or other drugs at school also have increased odds of serious problems such as depression, intimate partner violence and suicide attempts, according to a new report recently released in Medical News Today. "At-school substance use is not just an isolated event requiring simple disciplinary action, but an important signal identifying teens in need of urgent psychosocial assessment and support," said lead study author Dr. Rebecca N. Dudovitz, assistant professor of pediatrics at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA and the UCLA Children's Discovery & Innovation Institute. With your children at home for the summer, it's the perfect time for more relaxed interaction with them. Spend time talking to your kids, including discussing your views on alcohol and drug use -- and be sure to carefully listen to their answers. Your voicedoes make a difference! Addiction Peer Recovery Coach Training Available in June On June 23-27, the Indiana Counselor's Association on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (ICAADA) will host a five-day, 30- hour training for those desiring to provide recovery coaching in a variety of recovery settings. Participants will learn how to promote recovery from alcohol and other drug addiction and how to remove obstacles and barriers to recovery. The comprehensive course includes opportunities to practice recovery coaching skills and explore the roles associated with recovery coaching: resource broker, role model, mentor, motivator, problem solver, advocate, organizer and lifestyle consultant. Sessions will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each of the five days. A limited number of scholarships are
