2 Course contents Aim: To enhance the knowledge about best practices in journalism. The training will include input from experts on journalism and EU affairs. The content will include: journalism, communications strategy and reporting the EU story. How to separate out spin from facts How to identify and get the best value from your sources How to provide balanced reporting Universal story telling techniques How to write / report on the EU story - the challenges of complexity Public relations communications, strategy, stakeholder analysis, message development, media relations Media interview techniques The project should develop a network of ambitious journalists able to bring a European and regional perspectives to their environments. 2

6 Trainers Andrew Manasseh Andrew has over 25 years experience in management and strategic communications in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. He spent 15 years with the British Council (UK Foreign Office) and was posted to countries in Asia and Europe. His work includes strategic communications training and consulting with governments, institutions and corporate clients across Europe and the Middle East. He has developed programmes for officials from central Europe, the Balkans and for policy makers in the many public affairs and trade associations in Brussels. He trained the government communications agency of Bahrain from 2009 until He has been working with the British Council Montenegro on a three-year project of communications training and capacity building for organisations involved in communications around EU accession. John Holland John Holland is an internationally recognised journalist and former Bureau Chief and Senior Correspondent at CNBC Europe. As a CBS News radio correspondent he produced on-site war reports breaking news from Middle East conflicts, the Africa and the Balkans and was a field producer for the award-winning news CBS program 60 Minutes as well as the CBS Evening News in the mid-1990s. In the mid and late 1980s he was Bureau Chief for United Press International in Vienna, covering the UN, CSCE and the International Atomic Energy Agency. John is Brussels based and has lectured for the European Journalism Centre in Brussels and delivered media training for numerous spokespeople from the EU institutions, agencies and EU trade associations. John works with Andrew on many media training and consulting projects including media training for government, associations and international organisations across Europe. 6
