1 Installing Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 ******** Close all applications before beginning the installation process. ******** Is Symantec Endpoint Protection installed on your computer? If you see the shield to the right, then your antivirus software has been installed. Just make sure you check that virus and spyware definitions are being updated and that you frequently run a scan on your computer. Uninstall Software Before installing Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP), you will need to uninstall the following programs. It s possible not all of the programs listed below are installed on your computer. Lavasoft Ad-Aware SpyBot S&D Windows Defender Symantec Antivirus Live Update and Symantec AntiVirus Note: If you decide to use SEP at home, you may have additional software to uninstall. Please check with other family members before uninstalling any software on a home computer. To uninstall software, you will need to use the Control Panel. However, you can uninstall Ad- Aware and SpyBot from the Start menu by using the Start, All Programs option. Refer to the screen captures below to see those options. 1

2 Uninstall Ad-Aware Note: If using Start, All Programs, Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal, Uninstall Ad-Aware SE Personal, make that selection and follow on-screen prompts. Otherwise, follow the steps below. 1. Click on Start, Control Panel. 2. Double click on Add or Remove Programs. 3. You will need to wait 30 seconds or so for the installed programs to populate. 4. Scroll to Ad-Aware 2007 (it may be at the top) and click on it to select it. 5. Click on the [Remove] button. 6. At the prompt Are you sure you want to remove Ad-Aware 2007 from your computer? click on the [Yes] button. 7. Select Automatic as the uninstall method. Then, click on [Next]. 8. Next, click on [Finish]. Note: If you are unable to uninstall this software under Control Panel, use the Start, All Programs method. Uninstall SpyBot 1. Click on Start, Control Panel. 2. Double click on Add or Remove Programs. 3. You will need to wait 30 seconds or so for the installed programs to populate. 4. Scroll to SpyBot Search & Destroy and click on it to select it. 5. Click on the [Remove] button. 6. At the prompt Are you really click on [Yes]. 7. Respond [No] when prompted about restarting. You will restart after you have uninstalled all necessary software. Uninstall Windows Defender 1. Click on Start, Control Panel. 2. Double click on Add or Remove Programs. 3. You will need to wait 30 seconds or so for the installed programs to populate. 4. Scroll to Windows Defender and click on it to select it. 5. Click on the [Remove] button. 6. At the prompt Are you sure click on [Yes]. 2

3 Uninstall Symantec AntiVirus If you are prompted for a password, use this one: usenav10 1. Click on Start, Control Panel. 2. Double click on Add or Remove Programs. 3. You will need to wait 30 seconds or so for the installed programs to populate. 4. Scroll to Live Update and click on it to select it. 5. Click on the [Change/Remove] button. 6. At the prompt Are you sure click on [Yes]. 7. Click on [OK] when you see LiveUpdate has been uninstalled successfully. 8. Scroll to Symantec AntiVirus and click on it to select it. 9. Then, click on the [Remove] button. 10. At the prompt Are you sure click on [Yes]. ***** Restart Your Computer Now. ***** Click on Start, Shutdown/Turn Off Computer (or similar option), Restart. If you see any Desktop icons for software you uninstalled, RIGHT click on them, select Delete, and then click on [Delete Shortcut]. 3

4 Installing Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 1. Put the CD labeled Symantec Endpoint Protection into your computer s CD/DVD drive. 2. When you see the screen below, click on: Install Symantec Endpoint Protection Client (Installs the endpoint protection client to computers that will be self-managed) Note: When installing the software on a Vista machine, you might need to click on [Continue] at the User Account Control screen. 3. At the Welcome screen click on [Next]. 4

5 4. Click to select I accept the terms and then click on [Next]. 5. Make sure Unmanaged client is selected and then click on [Next]. 5

6 6. Keep the default value Typical selected and then click on [Next]. 7. Next, click on [Install]. Note: If you are connected to the Internet, LiveUpdate will run automatically after the software is installed. 8. When prompted to restart, click on [Restart Now]. 6

7 9. When you return to your login screen, log into your computer. 10. Eject the CD and store with your other software. Notice the new icon in the tray area at the bottom right of your screen. The exclamation mark means the updates are old, and you need to download and install the latest virus definitions. Updating Definitions If LiveUpdate did not run automatically, follow the steps in the sections below. You have three options to do this first live update of SEP s virus definitions. You can use the LiveUpdate option to the left of the Symantec Endpoint Protection main screen, the [Fix] button on the main screen, or you can run the definitions file on the CD. Updating with LiveUpdate or Fix If you choose to use LiveUpdate or Fix to update Symantec s virus and spyware definitions, launch Symantec Endpoint Protection by clicking on the SEP icon in the tray area. 7

8 Customizing Symantec Endpoint Protection To make sure SEP is set up correctly, you will need to check some settings. 1. Load Symantec Endpoint Protection by double clicking on the SEP icon in the computer s tray area (bottom right of screen). Set LiveUpdate Schedule 2. Click on Change settings from the menu to the left of the screen. 3. Next, click on [Configure Settings] for Client Management. 8

9 4. Then, click on the Scheduled Updates tab. Set the following options as shown below. If you would like to change the time, that is fine. However, it should be a time when your computer is turned on. 5. To make sure LiveUpdate will run every day your computer is turned on, click on the [Advanced ] button and modify a few other settings. Since you have Symantec set to check daily for live updates, the first setting ( number of days ) is fine set to 1. If you don t always arrive at your office in time to turn on your computer within an hour of so of the scheduled time, you might want to adjust the second option ( number of minutes ). For HELP about the options, press <F1> while the above screen is showing on your screen. 9

10 Set Scanning Schedule 1. Load Symantec Endpoint Protection by double clicking on the SEP icon in the computer s tray area (bottom right of screen). 2. Click on the Scan for threats option to the left of the screen. 3. Then, click on Create a New Scan. 4. Select Full Scan and click on [Next] at the Create New Scan What to Scan screen. Note: Instead of a Full Scan ( minutes), you might want to set up a Quick Scan for the daily scan. Use your discretion. You should set up a Full Scan on at least a weekly basis. It is recommended you manually run LiveUpdate and a Full Scan when you hear a new virus announced. 5. Click [Next] at the Create New Scan Scan Options. 10

11 6. Select At specified times at the Create New Scan When to Scan screen and click on [Next]. 7. At the Create New Scan Schedule screen select Daily and then a time that will work for you. This screen capture shows a scan at 12:00 p.m or noon. 8. Once you have selected Daily and a time, click on [Next]. 9. At the Create New Scan Scan Name, type a name for the newly-created automatic scan. The example here is named Daily Scan. 10. Click on [Finish] to save your changes and return to the main SEP screen.
