1 Ashland Big Read 2015 The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Ohio University Southern Literature Club s Feel it Like Fitzgerald poetry contest. March 30 Open to grades 6-8 and grades Students may submit a poem from the point of view of one of your favorite characters. Through this character s voice, work with one of the themes in the book. Use sensory language, metaphor, simile, and symbol to establish a mood for the poem and to help the character s words come to life. Rhyming is optional not required. Prizes will be awarded. Format: Typed, single-spaced, in a rapt Times New Roman font. The poem should be at least 30 lines in length, but no more than 2 pages. Please DO NOT center the poem on the page (line it up on the lefthand margin). DO NOT include your name anywhere on the poem. Send your poem as an attachment from your teacher s . In your , include First and Last Name, Poem Title, Grade, School, Teacher s Name, and Teacher s address. In honor of The Big Read, we are asking our local poets to sharpen their pencils and write about My American Dream. In The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is trying to reach his American dream and escape the life he knew. What is your dream? Have you achieved it? Or is it just out of reach? Poems can be dropped off at the nearest Briggs Lawrence County Public Library branch any time during the month of April. At the end of April, the poems will be judged. Winners will be announced in May. First place will receive a gift card and a certificate naming them 2015 Poet Laureate of Briggs Lawrence County Public Library. Tri-State Writers' Bloc Poetry Contest Please submit work as by March 23. Submissions to be made to the Greenup County Extension office Fine Arts Program. 2 The Roar of the 20 s This mini-unit will expose students of all ages to the time period made famous in The Great Gatsby. Students will have a one hour session that will include art styles of the 20 s, a demonstration of live jazz music, a fashion show with discussion about relevance of clothing and styles a demonstration of several dances of the period and will end with students participating in learning the steps of the Charleston. 3 The Grandeur of Gatsby (Official Kick Off Event) Paramount Arts Center April 12 Presentations at 2 pm and 3 pm Free of Charge Experience a taste of the world of Gatsby as you are seated in the beautiful Paramount Arts Center built in the middle of the age of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Learn the history of the theatre and the art deco design and artwork prevalent in the 1920 s and 30 s. See a fashion show presenting the styles of the day from the flapper to the look of high society. Listen to the sounds of live jazz music. Watch the premiere performance of a Gatsby-themed dance presented and commissioned by The Ashland Youth Ballet and choreographed by OU graduate, Chris Terry who is now a music video performer and freelance choreographer. Before you leave come up onstage and learn steps of the Charleston and the varsity drag hit dances of the age. Hits 97.9 will be setting up a live remote and prizes will be given out throughout the day! All partner agencies involved with The Big Read will set up a display. The Roar of the 20 s Theme Week April St. Joseph High School, Ironton, OH Students from St. Joseph High School will celebrate "The Roar of the Twenties" culminating in an afternoon viewing of the movie. Teachers will be reading the book, looking at technology and science of the era, as well as the performance aspects of theater and film. With the colored waxes used to seal envelopes, they made a variety of different items. We will be using this charming medium to make specialized jewelry. Supplies will be limited, so please register s Variety Show April 24/25 St. Joseph and St. Lawrence Schools, Ironton, OH Our 39th Annual Variety Show will be themed around the 20's-30's, as the school was founded in The students are currently writing the script which includes music and dance of the era and moves us forward to the present day. We are beginning the show in "black and white" and colorizing it towards the end. The stage will be decorated in art deco styles with costuming appropriate to the era. The Rise and Fall of F. Scott Fitzgerald Professional Development Workshop for Educator s Presented by Dr. Elliot Engel at May 4 at The Paramount Arts Center Banquet Hall 4:00 pm Cost $50 Teachers will enjoy a presentation by Dr. Elliot Engel, who will present little known information and new ways for presenting The Great Gatsby in the classroom. Registration includes 2 hours of CEU credit, a classroom set (20) of The Great Gatsby, access to reader s guides, lesson plans and a 3 CD set of Dr. Engel s work. Pre-registration is required. Scott Fitzgerald (Key Note Presentation) at The Paramount Arts Center May 4 at 7:30 pm Presented by Dr. Elliot Engel $12/adults and $10/students Dr. Engel will reveal the fascinating life and times of one of America s most popular novelists. Using anecdotes, biography, analysis and large doses of humor, Engel explains how and why Fitzgerald s unique personality and creative imagination became the perfect symbol of what is now known as the Jazz Age or the Roaring Twenties. Originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, Dr. Engel now lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he has taught at the University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University, and Duke University. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at UCLA. While at UCLA he won that university s Outstanding Teacher Award. Dr. Engel has written ten books published in England, Japan, Turkey, and the United States. His mini-lecture series on Charles Dickens ran on PBS television stations around the country. His articles have appeared in numerous newspapers and national magazines including Newsweek. He has lectured throughout the United States and on all the continents including Antarctica. Four plays which he has written have been produced during the last ten years.
