1 COURSE TITLE: SHAKESPEARE AT ASHLAND XII: 2009 NO OF CREDITS: 3 QUARTER CREDITS WA CLOCK HRS: 30 [semester equivalent = 2 credits] PDUs 30 CEU HRS: 30 INSTRUCT: MICHAEL W. SHURGOT, Ph.D. 206/ Home mwshurgot@earthlink.net CLASS DATES: July 21-24, 2009 COURSE DESCRIPTION: During the past two decades there has been an increased emphasis on teaching Shakespeare through performance in both high school and college curricula. This emphasis is supported by institutions as diverse as the Folger Shakespeare Library, The Shakespeare Association of America, and the National Council of Teachers of English. The Ashland Shakespeare Festival provides a perfect workshop for pursuing exercises in teaching Shakespeare through performance. We will study four plays produced by the 2009 Ashland Shakespeare Festival. Our discussion will emphasize that, like all playwrights, Shakespeare rote scripts intended for actors and audiences, and that a Shakespearean play assumes full meaning only when performed. We shall discuss practical ways to make performance analysis and choices relevant to all levels of classroom teaching. TO REGISTER: All registrations for this course must be made directly with me, Dr. Shurgot, either by phone or, preferably, by <mwshurgot@earthlink.net>. LEARNING OUTCOMES: As a result of taking this course, participants will learn: To acquaint themselves with Shakespeare s in performance; To understand how performance enhances all aspects of a script; To understand, through close reading of the scripts, how to teach performance choices to students; To determine methods for teaching performance in classrooms, including exercises for all school levels. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Following are general course requirements weighted for determining the granting of university credit. Antioch University Seattle requires 75% or better to issue credit at the 400 level and 85% or better to issue credit at the 500 levels. 1. Attendance and active participation at all class sessions 40% 2. Reading of all scripts, articles, handouts, texts as instructed 30% 3. Satisfactory completion of all outside assignments 30% Shakespeare at Ashland XII 1 Rev 2/11/2009
2 400 & 500 LEVEL OUTSIDE ASSIGNMENTS: Depending on your preferences and professional situation; complete one of the following: 1. A 4-5 page lesson plan focused on incorporating performance teaching of a specific play from the 2009 Ashland Festival at a specific grade level. Paper should include specific teaching plans, suggested student assignments, evaluation methods, and expected outcomes for the students. 2. A lesson plan for a series of workshops with students in which they would stage a scene from one of the 2009 Festival plays. You will examine a chosen character from a 2009 Festival play and then write speaking and stage directions for playing their character in a performance of their chosen scene. Other students could then critique the performance, and/or build scenery, secure props, etc. 3. Another assignment of your own design with prior approval of the instructor. 500 LEVEL OUTSIDE ASSIGNMENTS: In addition to the 400 level assignment complete one of the following: 1. A 2-3 page paper focused on incorporating performance teaching of 2 plays from the 2009 Ashland Festival at a specific grade level. Paper should include specific teaching plans, suggested student assignments, evaluation methods, and expected outcomes for the students. This paper should also include research in some of the Teaching Shakespeare bibliography listed below or similar pedagogical research. 2. A 2-3 page research paper examining the stage history of two 2009 Festival plays, including reviews of several contemporary performances of the play. The paper would then explain how this theatre and performance history would be used in teaching the plays in class. The actual performance history of the play could then be used as an actual pedagogical device for emphasizing some of the plays major themes and characterizations. 3. Another assignment of your own design with prior approval of the instructor. ASSIGNMENT FMAT & DUE DATE: Papers should be typed or word-processed, doubled-spaced, single sided and sent to instructor s address listed in this syllabus. All assignments are due to the instructor by August 15, REQUIRED READING: Miriam Gilbert, Teaching Shakespeare Through Performance. Shakespeare Quarterly 35 #5 (Summer, 1984): Jay L. Halio, This Wide and Universal State : Shakespeare s Plays as Plays. in Teaching Shakespeare. Ed. Walter Edens, et.al. Signet (or similar) paperback editions of all the Festival plays. MATERIALS FEE: $3.00 fee for copies of required readings and related handouts. Shakespeare at Ashland XII 2 Rev 2/11/2009
